I saw somewhere that the screen was gorilla glass, but I find that hard to believe. It feels so plastic and my finger doesn't glide across the screen, it makes a resistance and doesn't like to let my finger slide smoothly. Any way to fix this? Is there a screen protector that I don't know about? I already took off the one with the tab by the headphone jack. This is really bugging me.

i do know its a scratch resistant glass. gorilla or not i cant say. my screen was always smooth unless i got something on my finger tips....like krispy kreme donuts lol. made it sticky!!

My wife dropped hers on the gravel driveway and now there is a vertical crack (not scratch) in the glass the whole length of the phone. It still works though, just not very tough.

id be looking to replace that. supposed to be gorilla glass and yet it cracked like that. i dropped my elite several times and it never even scratched once. tough old bird...just never worked right lol

Gorilla glass is scratch resistant, but it really isn't very resistant to drops...

That was an interesting video. Gorilla Glass is obviously a good product and I was impressed how it held up to some of those tests. It appeared to me that with even a cheap case, most of those cracked edges would not have occurred. Like Curtis, I have dropped my Elite too many times. (I’m good for the “yank it out of the pocket without a good grip on it” move that sends the phone hurling across the room. But it seems how it lands is the largest factor in deciding if it will break or not.

After having a Blackberry candy bar form factor for years that I kept in a hard case, one that had a plastic shield for even the screen, I've not used anything to protect my OE. I do try to keep it safe as best I can but it is just out there vs my BB which was armored to the hilt and was not even a touch screen to boot.

So far I have one very minor scratch on the glass, and it is glass but I can tell it is not very thick, and I can't even find it right now looking at it. I can't even see it when I'm actually using it, only when the screen is unlit and at a certain angle. The glass itself might not be Corning Gorilla Glass but as that video said there are multiple manufacturers of the same type of stuff. Given the OE's cost it would not surprise me to find that it has another manufacturers product but it clearly is some type of hardened glass.

Finally I will say that the surface will get smudged quick. However a few quick wipes on nearly anything that is not the equivalent of sandpaper takes care of that and it's back to work.

My optimus elite broke/shattered today when I was jogging Virgin mobiles gonna send me a replacement.

Do they give you a big hassle?

I wanted to check on it, but she is worried that when she sends the phone back, they will get her info. Isn't there a way to "clear" all personal data from the phone?

How long does it take to get the replacement?

Can you wait until the replace arrives before you send back the bad phone?

Sorry for all the questions - I'm trying to convince her we should see about getting it replaced.

One good thing about Virgin Mobile is they will replace your phone if you just send it back to them.

Now does that go for phones purchased at other places and without phone insurance? I still have a chance to get insurance on the phone but the only problem is I'm dirt cheap.

My wife does not have insurance on her phone and it was purchased from Radio Shack. I'm wondering the same thing.

They will honor the 1 year manufacturers warranty but I think it only applies to hardware or software issues... if it's damage or neglect I doubt it.

There is a manufacturer's warranty which I believe actually does cover physical damage (which is also technically a hardware issue) including if you dropped it in water or spilled some on it.

They express mail the replacement to you. My girlfriend got hers replaced when it bricked trying to update the firmware to ZV5, she got a replacement in 3 days.

Yes, you can wait until the replacement arrives. They give you a couple weeks to send it in.

There is a way to clear all data from the phone, provided you can power it on. If you can power it on, hold down the (-) Volume key while powering it on, and continue holding down that volume key until it boots into "Recovery". It should give you a few options here - one of them is Factory Reset. You can scroll down to this by using the +/- Volume Keys, and the menu key selects the option. Confirming the factory reset, your phone will be exactly how you initially acquired it - free of any user data, personal or otherwise.

This is the first smart phone I've had so the reasons for the question.

If I set her up a Gmail (google) account and then sync it, does that save all her phone contacts? Then when she gets a new phone a sync will copy them to a new phone?

To be safe I would get apps to make some more backups. One to back up your wife's contacts and one to back up her SMS. Google sync got me once, so now I have multiple backups.

Yes. As long as you have sync on (and go into settings to set what does or does not sync), it will sync her phone contacts among other things. It can copy them over to a replacement or new phone, yes.

I myself have sync off, as I am rooted and use Titanium Backup (which supports backing up your messages, too) and if I need to restore contacts or messages, I can do so easily.

Artine, I have sync off myself too. I just go in every once in awhile and manually sync.
