Default Encryption Question

i recently came from a blackberry 9650 to an LGOG with ICS. I'm have a question about device encryption before i go ahead and do it. with my blackberry it would encrypt my files, but there was no way to decrypt them once they were actually encrypted. pictures, videos, media, etc could not be removed in a usable format unless they were sent from the device. will i have that issue with my LG? i would like to be able to encrypt the device but have usable files to export once i unlock it.

thanks
