2.1 IS due soon, as it has been in beta testing for some time. I have been told 15th September, but it should be with us before Christmas, at a guess.

It's DEFINITELY coming, because a few Russian and Thai sites have posted pictures of the Optimus with 2.1 on them.

(EDIT: 15th confirmed by Greek CS for LG, apparently: 2.1 release due in July 2010 - Android @ MoDaCo)

LG`s update advisor on the website is a joke, it askes you for you phone model , but if you input any letters or numbers it still says an update is available.

It means your phone is able to be updated via the website not that an actual update is available.

Thank you for contacting LG Electronics

Dear xxxxxx,

When I was trying to get help with an issue from the shop, they contacted LG for guidance and got the response to wait for the update which is expected end of next week or perhaps the week after.

^ I second that emotion.

Although, I *was* bummed to learn that apps can only be installed to the mem. card with 2.2 or above.

The limited internal memory is just about this phone's only drawback...

Hi all ! (sorry for my english...)

Androidplanet.nl has recently published an article dated Sept 22, saying that LG officially announced a 2.1 upgrade for GT540 cellphones before the end of the year !

I googled the web to find any official information from LG, as said in the article, with no results at all. Besides, I'm still waiting for an answer since I posted a comment to the journalist on Androidplanet.nl.

The information looks credible, even though it comes after many other promises of that kind, with no effects at all.

Here is the link to the article (use a NL > EN online translator) :
LG GT540 en GW620 krijgen binnenkort update - Android - Androidplanet.nl

Has anyone been told about such an annoucement from LG ?

Best regards.

I recently spotted a mail from the LG support in Sweden saying that the update supposedly will arrive in late October. However, I've seen a lot of those mails circulating many Android forum boards with all kind of different dates so I'm not really convinced. Yet.

No, we are NOT getting it this month, or the next month..

Reply from LG:

Dear XXXXXXX,

Thank you for emailing LG Electronics Australia & New Zealand Pty Ltd.

The update for the GT540 is still undergroing the testing phase and LG want to ensure that all issues and bugs are corrected prior to release. Due to this, the software is set to be released within the next 2 months.

We apologise for any inconvenience,

I hope this has been of some assistance.

Calm down, at least their testing it properly. They never made an official announcement anywhere so we have nothing to be angry about. All the dates given were estimates.

At first they said to me that we'll get the update in mid September, then they say end of September, then they said End of September/October and then end of October... And now, within next 2months?! They are just doing what Motorola did... What will they say in the next reply!? "You won't get the update..."??

Now, does this mean we will get ANDROID 2.2 later?!?!

---------------------------------------------------
Dear XXXXXXXXX,

Thank you for emailing LG Electronics Australia and New Zealand Pty Ltd.

As Android 2.2 has not been fully released, LG has not made any firm decisions on when Froyo (2.2) will be released for the Optimus GT540F.

We have planned an update to Eclair (2.1) to be released some time within the next few weeks. Unfortunately we don&#39t have an exact date right at the moment.

I hope this has been of some assistance.

Please let it be so ! LG is going to ship a couple of new phones this month that basically have the same hardware as the GT 540 (but capacitive screens instead of resistive) that will ship with 2.2 so i imagine it shouldnt be too hard for them to port their firmware to the GT 540 but the tech support replies are notoriously unreliable so...

In the article it says that shazam doesnt come preinstalled anymore.Does that mean that i wont get unlimited tags anymore but just 5 tags a month? Because thats what you get if you installed shazam after july or something. It also says that facebook and twitter are preinstalled. Does that mean that 1/8th of my (extremely) limited memory will be wasted on 2 apps i ll never ever use? I really dont like the sound of that. Can anyone tell me how much memory you have left after you flash the rom?

The most important ornament it certainly Live wall-paper, and the biggest lack this video the chamber, it removes now several times worse (on video pixels are very visible) it video concerns only. Through Bluetooth any files now are easy sent. As very easily also have quickly got driver's licence ROOT.

The insertion through program LGMobile update (LGMobile Support Tool) in Russia is now inaccessible. An insertion have laid out for three days and have then closed, have told that defects have found and now them correct, whether on it it will be clear it is corrected 2.1 or new 2.2. If to tell about minuses except the chamber that it is possible to carp at much but it is not so necessary, the train is started also it will not stop... And concerning recoil with 2.1 on 1.6 yet do not send the decision and it is impossible.

So is it not possible to officially update this phone yet? What steps should one in the US take to updating it when the time comes? Simply change the home country to UK or Australia?

Edit:

Seems I've found my answer. I can change my country in the update tool. Duh. Still not able to update though. Guess they pulled it.

Then I have to be doing something wrong. I have never put a sim card into the phone. Does that need to happen first?

Should I be setting the phone to any particular locale? Picking any particular country in the update tool?

GT540 update 1.6 -> 2.1 has been widthdrawn temporarily due to problems.

It will available again later. This information is from the Finnish LG support on 2.12.

Edit: First time I tried to update maybe on 29.11 without success. Version is V10C and the telephone is operator-free.

I wonder whom I should ask... Finnish LG support or Santa Claus.

I believe Santa Claus knows more about Nokia phones

Default NOTHING happened :(

Hi everyone,

I feel a bit upset and sad at the same time but that's not the main problem. The problem is, I tried to update my phone after I installed the program from LG, etc (I hate to use Windows, I'm a Linux User but there is no Updater Program for Linux on LG Website) and then followed all the steps to update my phone but ... after all, I still do have the old version which is 1.6

I don't know what to do? I'm not sure if it's even possible to update the phone or not? I read all the posts here in this thread and I hope I did not miss anything.

I'll try once more to update my phone and hope it will happen this time.

Any idea/thought what is going on in my case?

THANK YOU!

  • 1.The update may not be available in your area
  • 2.Your carrier apparently is the one that has to release the update (they have to get all their bloat into Android before they update it)
  • 3.You may want to talk about this directly to a)LG or b) Your carrier, oherwise your left with 1.6 or a custom ROM

No, either you update it via the Offical LG Updater or you put a Custom ROM on it.

I bought an LG Optimus not that long ago too. To upgrade android v1.6 to v2.1 on an LG all you need to do is visit www.LGworld.com, select your continent and country, then click on the link that says 'Manual and Software download', click on the download button for 'LG Mobile Support Tool' and when downloaded connect your Phone to your PC and if you haven't already download the Drivers 4 your phone before updating and then as soon as you hit the update button which should turn red (If it hasn't you probably didn't download the correct phone drivers!) you will upgrade to ANDROID v2.1 from 1.6 in no time! To upgrade Android version wait for 2nd screen to appear after successfully connecting your phone and installing drivers.

I hope I helped, Bye
:-)
