Post Tutorial: Manual update 3020 prl

Note: In this tutorial I will give links to sections where you can download the necessary files needed for 3g service; for LGNPST I will give you the thread where I got my version and it is up to you to find the link I describe because I do not want to be responsible for hosting the file. Also for those who are unaware, I DO NOT GUARANTEE that you will get 3g. This has been something new being reported on the forums and has not been officially announced by Metro PCS. Also, thank andyo70 for his thread.

Step 1: Downloading the necessary files and getting spc code. (Be sure you keep these folders in a space where you will remember them, or easily accessible such as Desktop)

Prl Link: 3020.prl

LGNPST Lab v1.2: LGNPST Lab 1.2 (Better than my fix)
(In this thread, look through the replies until you see the post by asadullah saying "here's the mirror" along with more detail on the file. you will see that the "here's" is in blue, it is a link. Click it and download the file from Google docs. )
You will download a .zip file, but inside the file are three .rar files. Since it is in a .rar file, you will need a .rar extractor.

Windows: Free RAR Extract Frog - Free software downloads and software reviews - CNET Download.com

SPC Code: To get this code which is needed, you can click this link CheckESNFree.com : The only instant, free, online ESN Checker click on the circle next to MetroPCS and type in your MEID in the bar provided. To find this, you can go to settings -> About Phone -> Phone Status and type in the digits under MEID DEC. Or you can take out the battery and in the slot you will see a white tab and you will see MEID above the bar code and a bunch of numbers to the right of it. type this in the bar and then click "Check ESN". The site will give you your SPC code which should be six digits. for example, my SPC is 076500, but yours will be different. Be sure to write down YOUR SPC code or memorize it because you will need it in the last step.

Step 2: Extract the files
Click the andyolgphonestuff.zip file that you got from the google download and extract the folder. As I said before, you will see the three rar files, but you will also see a 3014.prl file, a MS690ZV3_36.scr.txt file, and a readme.txt file. Ignore the rest and open the readme.txt file as it will guide you through the installation better than I can describe it. Do follow the readme closely and be sure to stop following the readme when it says "Make sure that where it says "Provision" it is set to "Upgrade". Do not ask about any of the other modes because I have no idea what they do or how they work." For the Shortcut option, I decided to skip that part and when I installed, I went to C://LG Electronics/LGNPST/ and selected the application that didnt have General in it's name, however you can access it however you want as long as it comes up and reads your phone.)

Step 3: PRL writing
Now that you have everything installed, make sure when you have the LGNPST lab open, you have your phone plugged in and make sure the aplication has identified your phone and it should show details in the box on the right. It'll have details of your phone including your phone number.
Now in the "Provision" box towards the bottom where you see "Upgrade", you will look there for a PRL/ERI tab. Click it, and it should take you to the tab and you will see checkboxes with labels like "Write", "Read", "PRL", and "ERI" as well as two little icons to the left of PRL that look like a folder and a trashcan. It should look like this.
PRL.jpg

Click the folder icon and find you 3020.prl file you downloaded, click the open and then check the box with "Write" next to it. Then hit the big button at the bottom that says "Start". A popup will show asking you to input your spc code. Input your SPC code then hit "Ok" and let the program do its things, AND DO NOT UNPLUG YOUR PHONE DURING THIS PROCESS. Leave your phone alone until the process is done. Dont touch it, dont look at it, dont even breathe on it. (lol jk, you can look at it or breathe on it, just dont touch it) During the process, you phone should reboot and come back to its lock screen, however DO NOT TOUCH THE PHONE until the application on the computer says it is complete. Once it is done, you should be updated to PRL 3020, and feel free to check your phone settings to be sure. If you are lucky, you may get the 3G icon on your statusbar, if not, you will still see a good old 1x icon (If you are unlucky, do not feel bad for I have it too)

Step 4: Enjoy (if you are lucky)
Again, I do not guarantee that you will get 3G. You might be unlucky like me and be stuck at 1x. However if you have 3G (you lucky basta**), then enjoy.

Excellent. I saw kris's question, and all I could think was how he's digging up a piece of history with lgnpst that I didn't feel like explaining right now lol. Your post is probably more concise than mine would have been.

That question was the whole reason I posted this. Felt bad for the guy, he wasnt really getting the help he needed in my view because explaining it takes forever. And nah, you would have done better with this tutorial than I could have,

It will just show up. I personally do not know because I am one of the unlucky ones. But apparently other people have simply woken up to having 3G so Im assuming itll just show up)

Nope, I have my phone rooted as well with a custom rom installed. This process is the same as if you called *228 and updated your roaming list via MetroPCS. It'll only change your PRL and boost your signal or just change your PRL.

If you're doing a nandroid restore from when you previously had a different PRL, yes. If your simply flashing a new rom over then no. Your PRL will stay at whatever it was before the flash.

o.0.... You weren't supposed to do it under the upgrade tab as stated in the tutorial. I said to look in the upper part of the box for PRL/ERI and click it and then you'd come to a section where you see Write and Read and then continue with the given instruction. As for getting your phone service back, open up the readme file and follow the instructions where I told you to stop reading it to put your phone back in an out of the box state. Note that this will do a factory reset and if you have rooted your phone and any other good stuff, it will be lost and you will start over again. If you have a custom recovery installed and did a nandroid backup before this, then you are in luck because then you can just take out the battery, put it back in after 5 seconds, then hold the Home button and Volume down button and the power up at the same time and hold it to reboot into your recovery. Also if you wish, if you do not have a custom recovery, you can just use the method I just mentioned to do a factory reset of your phone and it should just be as if you flashed a new rom. Lemme know how it goes, if it doesnt work please tell me a bit about your phone so I can give you a straight option instead of detailing multiple possibilities. Also, you could just try reflashing the PRL correctly, but do this if the PRL is the only thing in your phone status that is missing. (Your phone number and MEID and etc should be there then attempt this option)

It's ok, for now lets concentrate on getting your phone working correctly then we can try the PRL update again.

Nice write up, much better then my simple instructions that assume the user has experience with these things.

star how bad is it, are your phone numbers, MDN and MIN 0'ed out? what about the MEID is it 0's?
If that is the case you will need to do many steps to get everything working again. but dont worry it is possible to do.

Thank you for the comment. And if star does have the issue your mentioning, then could you help him/her out for me please? I have not been in that situation so I have no real experience as to what can be done and I do not want to tell her to do something that'll only mess the phone up more. (if possible)

Well all I can say is I followed the instructions and it just showed 0% . Does having Nam1 and Nam2 both checked have anything to do with it?

It says MS690, but I gave up and then an hour or so later, I had the 3g signal
and market 3.0. But it updated itself, oh and right now I am using Joneidy's Gingerbread rom if that helps anyone. I was using his Sense Rom prior to that.

huh... maybe that will happen with the other user who had the same issue.. As for getting the 3G, (you lucky basta**) enjoy it. However the coverage seems to be very limited. Im just waiting and praying my area gets it soon.

This isn't supposed to take that long, right? It's been about 30 minutes and the program has been still the entire time. As well as my phone. Is that common?

No it should take 10 mins or less.

try closing the program reopening it and doing it again. Make sure it looks like the pic before hitting the start button.

So...If I'm not a lucky basta** will the 3020 strengthen my signal still? Also, will this take my phone back to stock? Oh and is the 3G actually 3G? I was reading that it was almost as slow as 1x.

Well I noticed a slight increase in internet speed with 3020 but no 3G. No your phone will stay the same, as I said before its the same as updating your roaming list via *228. As for the 3G, I do not know by experience but people have reported a drastic difference in speed.

Actually, I did restore a previous nand back up, from before I had the PRL 3020, and it didn't change. I basically un-rooted my phone (I thought I had over heated it in my air conditioned car, in this Texas heat) and went back to un-rooted stock 2.2. I guess that I will clarify my thoughts; for me, my PRL didn't revert when I did a restore from a previous nand back up. I can't guarantee that will be the case for everyone.

Your prl like the meid and phone number is not affected by backups or restores
If you do a back up using prl 3014 and then update your prl, to 3019 or 3020 and then go back to the back up that has 3014 you will still be on the new prl

its possible that metro pulled the prl update, and sent the old one in its place.
Right now with the 3020 I heard 2 people say that after being upgraded to 3020, via *228, they later found themselves back on 3019.

Also how did you do the restore? from a nand backup?

well if you've got the file and lgnpst, you can always push 3020 back on.

btw, what the hell does lgnpst stand for anyway? LG is obvious, but NPST? I've observed a common thread (no pun intended) whereas other programs such as QPST also end in PST, but that's it.

That is a good question, one I do not know.

cdma workshop is another way to do many of these things, and obviously on more then just lg phones, however the price tag on cdma workshop is not so nice. which is why I am very glad LGNPST is around.

Not that there aren't ways to get cdma of course

I've wondered about that as well.

That did happen to my wife's phone. The same day I got the 3020, she had gotten it as well. The next day she was back to 3019. Now today, a week later, she has the 3020 again (and thus 3G as well). Her phone was upgraded (and downgraded and subsequently upgraded again) automatically; it was pushed to her phone. After the downgrade, I had tried the *228 but it stayed at 3019.

Pretty sure lgnpst is pirated, but I have yet to see where I could possibly buy a legitimate copy/license. I think that means we're not supposed to have it lol.

Went ahead and started installing the LGNPST; it stands for New Product Support Tool.
