Default Optimus memory of 512mb??

I just got my Optimus. I read that it is supposed to have 512MB of internal memory. I started it up and downloaded only a few smaller apps and it says 145mb with everything closed. What gives??

That's not normal. I've got a lot of apps and it usually stays within 220MB+ free.

Mine says 143+114mb on the service page.

To the OP: Is your phone running sluggish? If not, don't worry about it

I'm not sure if OP is referring to the internal storage memory or internal RAM memory when he said only 145Mb left. Those are very different, but often folks get confused on it.

When I go to SD card and phone storage setting the internal storage is getting lower and lower with every app I get. I don't have that many (I think I downloaded 12 so far) and the internal memory says 40mb left. What happens when that goes to zero? Does that mean I can't download any more apps unless I delete some?

If root and install the thunderom you'll have quite a bit more internal storage memory for installing apps. You'll get about 150megs. Which is a good deal more than what you get stock.

OK. So it looks like OP is talking about internal storage space where the apps are installed. I think I saw somewhere that Optimus S has 150Mb of internal storage and 512Mb of internal RAM memory, but not 100% sure. Can anyone confirm this?

the optimus has 512m storage and 512mb ram, but you share the 512m storage with other parts of the system, boot, recovery, system, ect. Your user partition is left with about 160mb, minus all your data (apps, dalvik-cache, login info, ect). It goes down fast.

Try ThundeROM which moves dalvik-cache, the biggest space-eater, into the virtually untouched /cache partition, thus giving you a big boost in free space.

This may, or may not help you:

I'm using a Sprint HTC Hero, and I get a "low memory" message at about 15MB left. Clearinng cache is one way to add back some "memory" or storage space. Removing unused apps is another.

Are you sure that Optimus has 512mb storage? I think it has 512Mb RAM and 512Mb ROM. ROM and storage are not the same thing though they are both flash memory. ROM is where OS and system are stored and internal storage is where apps are installed. Do you have source on Optimus internal storage size?

No. Just what I keep reading. Really is a bummer one can only put 20-30+- apps (depending on size) onto this phone. I feel so limited.

That's because internal storage memory of Optimus is small, only about 150Mb. For example, if the average size of your app is about 4Mb (some apps are bigger than 10Mb and some apps are smaller than 1Mb), 30 apps will easily occupy 120Mb of internal storage space, leaving not so much room for more apps. Also your browser is using some of internal storage space for caching pages.
If you want to install a lot of apps to your phone, you need step up to higher one like EVO, Epic.

I heard Epic has 1Gb internal storage, but not sure of Evo. Probably 2Gb or more. Most HTC, Motorola android super-phones on Verizon have 8Gbs, which is huge.

Froyo has built in .... apps to SD. helps free up more space for more apps.

I am currently using a Hero..
it has 512 and 256...
I can still load more than 40 apps. Most apps are between 1 and 2 mb.

but I would still want more memory.
Memory is cheap! why cant they put in 4gb? how much more would it really cost? maybe $10!

According to the LG site, the S has 140MB Internal User Memory.

The Samsung site states for the Epic 4G "16GB ROM/512MB RAM Memory that is built into the phone for the purpose of receiving and storing data."

The HTC site states for the EVO 4G "Internal Memory 1GB ROM/ 512MB RAM".

i found that the LG S has 512 / 512... 140 is what is left after android uses what it needs.

I find it interesting that my Hero has 160 left.... hhmmmmm...

Again that 512/512 is size of RAM/ROM in the phone. I think the internal memory storage is separate flash memory on board reserved for apps. ROM and internal memory size are clearly stated in many Verizon android phones, but somehow specs on Sprint phones state it very vaguely. So I'm not sure if part of ROM is indeed used for apps like you say.

It has very low memory capacity unlike other smartphones. I still not recommend it.

How much do other smart phones have then? Despite the Optimus S low memory for apps I still highly recommend it to anyone. I will take the low memory, great stability, responsiveness, not a battery eater, and updated android OS right from the beginning over phones that don't have 2.2, are battery suckers, and unstable, big and heavy and not responsive anyday.

i want to point out....

EPIC has the same memory: 512mb / 512mb... android is fine with that. Of course more is better.

I have around 20-30 apps and still have 140 mb free. Its worth rooting and installing Thunderom 1.5. You can always un-root and go back to stock if you want.
