Does anyone use the portable hotspot as their main internet provider at home? I currently have the usual hispeed cable internet at my house and Im thinking I can save quite a bit of money by just using the free quick settings app and then use the optimus s as my "hotspot". I have an unlimited data plan but I fear that the amount of web use from my laptop usage may raise a few red flags when my data usage on my cell plan skyrockets. Any input at all would be great. TIA

I really doubt they'll say anything. I use Barnacle on my Fascinate at school because our internet sucks major balls

From what I have been told if you use the "quick settings" app to get around the sprint hot spot lock, then sprint cannot tell the difference on your account. They see it as normal internet usage as if it were just comming from your phone internet. Not what ever you are tethered to.

Thanks. Ive used the hotspot on occasion at my house when the cable internet is down but I havent had any kind of reliable way of making sure that my bill isnt going to skyrocket due to them red flagging my acct for a resent spike in data usage. With how much I pay for my cable internet I could pay the sprint hotspot charge and still save hundreds of dollars per year.

If you are going to rely on it, it might be better for you to pay for it. Before you do, I would give it a test run and see how it truly works for you running only on 3G for your home internet. Don't move to something you'll regret.

I used Quick Settings as well and compared to my highspeed internet from <insert company that the entire world hates here> it's terrible. I don't have the best 3G reception in my area...so that's what it is going to make or break it for you.

Ive given it a few dry runs. My 3g signal at my house is good and it was only marginally slower than my current wired internet connection. The main reason for even contemplating this idea is the potential $600 a yr in savings.

I have pretty much the same question. Difference is, I just got the Straight Talk prepaid set-up.(Unlimited,30 days) with my Galaxy Proclaim. I am new to using Android, and I know the Proclaim is new to Straight Talk.

The plan says "unlimited" but I believe excessive data usage could kill the unlimited status and terminate the plan I paid $45 for.

I also have a mobile MiFi hot spot. (Prepaid thru Virgin) that I use for my laptop internet connection.

Will using my phone's WiFi thru the hot spot mess me up with my plan, or should I just keep WiFi turned off altogether and stick with Straight Talk's mobile web?

Well, I guess this isn't the same question, but it was the only thread i could find concerning hot spots.

WiFi is WiFi, Data is Data.
The only thing you pay for on any mobile phone is minutes and Data. I only use my Data when I'm away from a WiFi source. I get unlimited Data which is throttled after 2GB (throttled means they reduce the download speed to the device until the new month, where you start from scratch on you plan). This mess's up nothing. 3G is slow. WiFi is faster, If I want to watch an old Star Trek episode on my phone I use WiFi so it's not choppy/laggy. If you have a VM MiFi and it is faster than the normal 3G, go with it.

Hate to get off topic, but I just wanted USB tether. Very pleased with easy tether. I was surprised at the performance. Installation was several steps, but the guidance was ok. I haven't tried a large download, but just browsing, I can't tell much difference. I normally have 12 Mb Cox cable. It failed for three hours, so I now have an emergency substitute that is excellent.

be advised that with my verizon account they told me i had unlimited data thats true . BUT they didnt say wifi hotspot was monitered seperate and apart so when the kids streamed videos from utube all day long on my hotspot my bill jumped 200.00 because they dont tell you there is a 5 gig cap on wifi data for the primary phone and 2 gig cap on all other phones on your bill so the only way to get around this is to tether with the few free programs downloadable from the internet just for everyones info thats my take.
