Default Who Has ZVJ ? ! ? !

From all I can tell, only five people or so have gotten the latest Gingerbread, the one that’s supposed to actually work.

Let us know when _you_ get it, root or otherwise...

Yeah, I'd like to hear from someone who has ZVJ now, too.

My phone is bugging me to do the update, but for now I'm declining it until I can hear from someone who has it.

Woke up this morning to see the announcement. Last time, because of negative reviews here, I yanked the battery and froze at 2.2.2. This time, based on a few acceptable reviews, I went for it... yikes!

It booted right up to a complete mess. Used Default App Manager to switch the launcher back to Launcher Pro and everything came back just like it was last night. So anyway, all is well so far.

Wife's phone is now bugging her to do the update, too. She's on the previous Gingerbread, which we successfully cleaned up after some effort. Hers, like others reported, didn't want to handle USB well at first.

Just tried that and it appears to work fine here.

I’m not in love with the black notification bar, but I’ll take it in exchange for everything behaving... so far.

Just checked... don’t see any trace of CIQ! A bunch if other system crud I never saw before, but no Carrier IQ.

Just checked... car charging works fine.

All in all, nothing has really changed that I can notice.

I got it a couple of days ago, moving from ZVD (froyo) to ZVJ. Netflix is now very much out of sync. Video is in slowmotion compared to regular audio speed.
Could someone check and see if this is working for your phone since the update? It was smooth on ZVD and still is on my wifes non-updated phone (she is on ZVD still).

Thanks

I have tried 5 versions of netflix, cleared all cache and data, wiped the phone to factory ZVJ, still out of sync.

Is it just me, or is the lurker-to-poster ratio really soft on this forum. 455 views of this thread, and only two have commented on getting ZVJ, and one was the original poster. Meanwhile, we know Sprint is out there pushing the upgrade, because our phones are bugging us to do it.

Sure wish I had a little bigger sample of responses before allowing it to proceed.

Actually downloaded the update via wifi after seeing this post yesterday. Went and reactivated my phone (had gone back to my BB after the forced gingerbread update that turned it into a glitchy, painfully slow mess) and I can tell you its tremendously better than it was. Also in the 7 hours Ive had it today the battery life seems significantly better, updated 13 apps, played some ww/f and draw this and still have 18% of battery life left. While I will be rooting it as soon as the option is available to this version and toying around with it, this is much more stable/ actually usable.

Me again. I think the upgrade went so smoothly this time and apparently did so little that users have fallen asleep at their chairs. I was going to, but forgot to, perform the upgrade at the Sprint store, being assured first that they had a new one for me just in case.

Is this new? In the apps drawer is an app called Downloads with a green icon arrow pointing down. Running it shows some ancient apk’s, maybe from me, don’t remember. No available options to help identify it, doesn’t even show up in running services.

Anyway, it’s new to me and I wonder if the upgrade put it there.

I believe it is, having finally got its info window: uses zero memory, can’t uninstall it, version 2.3.3 -- just like the new OS.

I got the ZVJ update and foolishly installed it. Just about all the apps I used broke with it.
Sonic CD (just didn't load. Worked OK on Froyo)
Draw Something(it logged into facebook with a popup screen but app screen was black)
Opera Mini
Gallery (I could still take photos but the icon in the corner was black and it hung for a minute.)
I had more, but I did a factory reset to froyo and applied the update again. It didn't fix anything. It's going back down to Froyo now.

Have you tried un/re-installing any of them, just to see?

How is that done?

I’m surprised to hear of such problems on this update; sounds more like last year’s botched Gingerbread. In fact, this is the first disaster story I’ve heard about the current update.

Are you near a Sprint store?

It just doesn't work. I used the Froyo downgrade from Sprint which was from the botched update last year.

Instructions on how to switch your Optimus S to Android 2.2 (FroYo) - Official LG Phone Forum

I went in cautiously the second time around and weather I installed in Froyo or waited until the Gingerbread update installed, the apps would freeze. (It prompted me to update to Gingerbread about an hour after my downgrade.) In general it doesn't feel right like the last time.

I never did the original Gingerbread, so I can only imagine what you’re going through. But I know if it was me, I’d take it straight to the store.

...anyone else here more in touch with his debacle?

I just downloaded the update and it works ok...lucky for me.
I so want a new phone though, I got this one in Nov 2010 and it is wearing on me like a wet blanket.
I only have like 150 to spend on a new phone...any suggestions?

I updated a few days ago and haven't really noticed a difference, good or bad. Only thing I had happen was once the update finished, some of my shortcuts were gone. Wasn't a big deal to replace them and I like the new voicemail that lets me save ones I want to keep to my SD card.

Default Updated a couple of days ago

So far things are OK. The other day I allowed the 2.3.3 update to be applied to my un-rooted Optimus S and no complaints so far. I have seen a noticeable improvement in battery life -- previously I was often manually killing various apps I wasn't using just to get another hour or two of usage, but now with better power management it's not as big an issue. Also, Sprint did live up to their announcement that they'd be discontinuing the use of Carrier IQ, no more un-killable CIQ background processes!

About the only problem I had after the update was a handful of icons had disappeared, scattered throughout my four screens. But the apps were still installed so it wasn't that big a deal to restore them. I have about 30 apps downloaded/installed from when my phone was still running 2.2 Froyo and all of them are still working after the update.

Mine had completely invented icons that I’d never seen before and very few of the ones I expected.

I could tell mine were there, but it wasn’t until I unassigned the stock launcher and assigned my trusty old Launcher Pro that everything came back, right where it was.

Laugh Updated today

I updated my son's unrooted phone fron zvc to the new gingerbread 2.3.3 and so far did not noticed any problem. Apps seem to start faster now and the phone feels a little more responsive, my son seems to like it so far...

Updated this morning. Very uneventful! VZJ seems ok. I have high hopes that this will provide better memory management than previous releases. Unlike many others, I had a good experience with the last update. I've listened to all the experts telling us how Android takes care of it, leave it alone. That's garbage. Android memory handling on thte LS670 has been ridiculously immature. Running out of memory because you've installed an app is stupid. Always looking around for apps to uninstall and finding new caches and email to delete is not the activity I have in mind for my phone. Otherwise, it's a nice phone.

I Updated my Non-Rooted Optimus S Yesterday. No Problems At All... Slight Improvements Noted Actually.

Battery Icon works as it should again. Saw a few more free free MB's available to the on board phone memory. Noticed the new Download Icon.

Things were a little buggy at first, but then I updated the Phones PROFILE and PRL, followed by a full shutdown and restart, then everything ran great.

Here’s my ground-breaking discovery about 2.3.3:

When you’re editing text and want to select a big chunk of it, longpressing no longer brings up ‘select text,’ it brings up ‘select word.’ That highlights the nearest word and provides handles at each end so you can expand the selection.

What’s the difference? None at all. My guess is that they had to lose the ‘select text’ name because it probably befuddled a lot of noobs that couldn’t select it yet.

It doesn’t get much more exciting than that, huh.

I just got the update and the first thing right off is I can't get ADW to work anymore the way it's supposed to. I could just be an idiot, but with every other launcher that I have had in the past hitting the home key prompts you to use a launcher that you have installed and you can check a box to use whatever you have listed as the default. I don't get this option screen any more. I am forced into using Sprints, terrible TERRIBLE launcher. I can hold the home key and run ADW from the running processes but that's not what I want to be dealing with.

Am I doing something wrong or did the new update fry ADW?

The update changed the default launcher to stock. I used Default App Manager to change it back. Handy to have around.

If your Added Launcher stops working after the Latest Update all ya' need to do is go to MANAGE APPLICATIONS, Select the Stock Launcher and Clear it's DATA and CACHE.

You will then get an option to select your preferred Launcher on the very next time you hit HOME.

OK, so the general drift seems to be that ZVJ is OK.

Specifically, have the problems of the previous Gingerbread release been resolved?

1-Car charging not working
2-Difficulties with access by PC as a USB drive

How do I turn off the requests to update? I am tired of the phone nagging me to update. After the nightmare last time,i don't have the time nor inclination to rebuild the phone from scratch. (not rooted).

I made the previous “update” think it had done its job by:

1. When prompted, tap More Info.
2. Immediately yank out the battery.
3. After half a minute, put it back and power on.
4. I had to power on twice.

But this update is completely different -- nothing appears to have broken, because almost nothing appears to have changed.

Have not encountered either problem, 1 or 2, since applying the update.

Thanks, funny thing is that the phone is no longer bugging me to update, it's been 24 hours and no reminders. And I did not do anything but use it as normal. If it comes back again will try the at they pull.

I just got this phone yesterday, and it was still on ZVD. The phone started bugging me to go to ZVJ, so I caved in. It got a bit slower, and oh goodness, the animations lagged like hell. So then I decided to downgrade to ZVD, root, flash a custom recovery, and got CM 7.2. Runs WAY smoother and is overall just a fantastic ROM. Feels more like a Nexus S than an Optimus S, lol.

My suggestion? Stay on ZVD and go for CM 7.2. MUCH better.

One quirk since the update is that the phone keeps going silent; no ring, no vibrate. That’s not very nice, although I have way of knowing the actual cause.

I've noticed since the update that the GPS icon in the Status bar will not disappear after I turn off Sprint Navigation and GPS in settings. It will only leave after I restart the phone. Not a big problem though.

Another thing that I guess is because of the update, because it started happening at the same time: I use(d) Total Call Control so I could answer the phone by pressing the volume-up button; drop the call by pressing the volume-down button... very handy. Now it stops the ringing but doesn’t do anything else.

FWIW, if you wait long enough it'll just do it itself, whether you want it to or not...

I'd been holding off, telling it "no" every time it offered. Yesterday, it just went ahead and did it without asking.

So far, all seems OK, except for the Curvefish GPS On/Off widget now being NFG.

I’m going on two months with it, and everything either works the same or close to it, with a few things a bit worse. Even if a few things were a bit better, I don’t see why Sprint ever bothered to release it in the first place, let alone the travesty they caused with their first attempt.
