Default Android newbie...how to upgrade from 2.2 to 2.3?

So I have got a LG Optimus One...and it runs on froyo and i wanted to upgrade it. I had it for a year now, and it took me quite some time to figure this phone (my older phone was a KRZR K1 which is ages old)..so I would be great if I could get some step-by-step instruction on how to upgrade to Gingerbread. Before posting here, I heard that backup was the very first thing...which is also a big problem because My phone doesnt have the Backup option in Privacy settings- people suggested to tick the Settings in the Search settings...funnily enough I dont even have Settings in the search settings..

So I am in a mess rite now...plz help

You need to install a custom recovery, it has the backup and Restore options as well as quit a few more. Most newer phones have to be rooted to allow for installation of a custom recovery.
You have posted in the Optimus T forum. If you want I can move you to the Optimus One forum where you will get the best advice for your specific phone.
