Default Unlimited HotSpot using Quick Settings App?

There has been some talk regarding the Optimus V not being able to be used as a Hotspot.

I use Quick Settings (Market) on my ATT Galaxy Tab and it works great enabling the Hotspot, although only 2G a month max for the $25.

If Quick Settings is used with the Optimus V, does this mean that we would be able to use the 'V' as an unlimited Hotspot for only $25 a month?

Anyone doing this?

Also, anyone able to locate one of these in the Milwaukee area? Every Radio Shack has not received their stock and Targets are clueless.

Yes, Quick Settings and HotSpot Widget can enable that function on the V...plenty of people have reported success. Radio Shacks in Ohio began recieving shipments today...call Target with the DPCI number 080-02-0724...many stores have 1-2 in the back.

I called all my radio shack and targets yesterday and they said they didn't have any. Went into radio shack today and they had received two. The manager said most of the phones were shipped late and that each store got two for the first shipment.

I think Sprint's app limits you to 5 connections, but if I remember correctly, the built-in froyo tethering allows 8 connections. I am using the widget and yes it works fine.

As for radio shack, if I were you I wouldn't call I would visit them. I have a feeling the reason both Target and Radio Shack are keeping the Optimus V in the back is that they really want people to come into the store for the V, and to walk out with the more expensive Intercept. It seems like nobody is putting them on the shelves.

I downloaded Quicksettings on my V, but the Hotspot area of that menu was not showing up. it is under "hidden settings" in the menu, for those who may not be able to find it.

I use tethering widget myself. I long press the home screen and a widget comes up and you configure it like in the video. I believe its the same way on the quick settings. It's cool.

Thank you for the information. I've been trying to get mine to "hotspot", but even with the Quick settings it's not showing a place for the hotspot. Can't even find it in hidden settings. Possible my phone is blocked??

Thanks for the information, I've been trying to get mine to 'Hotspot", but no info shows on the screen. Or in the hidden settings. Just don't know what the problem is.
Now Sunday, the 6th. Still no luck in getting the hotspot to show on my Optimus V.
Any other tips?? I've downloaded quick settings and hotspot widget. This is my 1st Android and I like the phone, but really bought it for the hotspot abilities.
Thanks.

Open QuickSettings, press the bottom left button on the phone, click on Customize, scroll down till you see Wi-Fi hotspot, press and hold the gray icon on the right until it "floats". Then you can slide it up to where you want it.

Not to be a stick in the mud, but the terms of service does prohibit tethering. So, VM could cut you off if they saw you using a lot of data. This may also lead VM to one day have actual stated limits just like all the other carriers nowadays if they see a spike in data. Just FYI. Not trying to cause a flood of posts saying I am an idiot or something, just letting you know what the terms state. Just be careful so they don't cut you off. So, again, there is no such thing as unlimited anymore. One guy in another forum did get cut off for using 5gb of data.

Feel free to post the link with the 5GB cutoff, I'd like to see it.

The only thing I've seen that's reliable to this point is a guy at Howard that specifically tried to hit the ceiling a week after the V came out, and found he was throttled down to 256k after 10GB. The VM rep told him that when he called to ask, and he was able to get his service reset. It's quite possible to hit 10GB if you do a lot of large file downloads, or stream video or music all day and night without ever tethering.

Wow, I knew Quick Settings was a cool little program, but I didn't know it could do this.

By the way, did you know you can set it up so that Quick Settings comes up when you hold down the "search" hardware button?

What's the difference between doing this and just using Easy Tether?

I mean... is there any pros/cons to either?

The full version of Easy Tether, which allows secure sites like banking and eBay, costs $9.95...the free version gives access to all non-secure sites. Using the WiFi HotSpot via Quick Settings does not have a charge, and does not require a cable to work.

One other thing about Easy Tether...it's inherently secure in terms of the connection, and does not require a password and server configuration to secure, as does using the HotSpot feature.

Just wondering if either is worse in terms of sucking resources, and also if either is going to draw so much attention to itself that VM would notice?

Again, to this point the only action VM is taking is if you manage to hit 10GB, at which point they throttle data speeds. Using wired or wireless tether doesn't matter as far as possible consumption...other than the fact it's easier to network more computers wirelessly...but the same thing can be done with a wired tether and Internet Connection Sharing in Windows.

Sprint blocked it using an OTA update because people were abusing it.

You will either have to pay for the hotspot fee or drop them and switch to Virgin Mobile

I don't think VM will work any longer - or at least I am doing something wrong. What I am getting is VERY odd.

I just bot an Optimus V yesterday and registered it. I installed Hotspot Widget, Hotspot Toggle, and Quick Settings. They all SEEMED to work, and I get the indicator on the phone that the Hotpot is Active. However, once I make the hotspot active, when I use the browser on the phone, it takes me to the www.m.VirginMobile.com site. I cannot change it no matter what I do.

I bought it to connect my Asus Transformer to the internet when I'm away from my desk wifi.

The Transformer finds the AndroidAP wifi, and shows it is connected, with a strong signal. It even shows the IP address. But the antenna [sic] icon is grey, not blue. It will not let me get to the internet - no Pandora, no Google Navigator, no browsing, no nothing.

btw, I see the 3G icon, and I have multiple bars indicating a strong 3G connection.

Am I missing something, or did VM make some changes.

Any suggestions how to make this work?

Uninstall all hotspot app except Quick Settings.
Turn on the hotspot in Quick Settings then touch the words Wi-Fi hotspot to the left of the button
Go to Configure Wi-Fi Hotspot and set you Network SSID, Change the security to WPA2-PSK and set a password.

I you still experience connectivity issues, restart the phone and laptop and try connecting again

Thanks. I'll try that. Hotspot Widget is a widget, not an app. Is there a way of uninstalling that?

No luck. It seems to be something hung up with the memory and/or browser. Eventually I get an error message: "The page at 'http://m.virginmobileusa.com' says ... jCarousel: No width/height set for items. This will cause an infinite loop. Aborting ..."

UPDATE: I called VM, and apparently many others had reported the problem of the browser being redirected to the m.virginmobileusa.com address. It was a server problem. They seem to have fixed it as of this morning.

Also, I still had a greyed out antenna icon. I don't know if this had any effect, or whether it was just coincidental but I changed my password in the WPA2-PSK to only letters (I had had letters and numerical digits before) . . . and

IT IS WORKING!. I tried Pandora and Navigation. Both worked. I am beginning to like this phone.

Quick Settings works great for me, it does stop every now and then (and I do have a good network signal) the speed is a little faster then dial up and suits my needs for now. I just worry if someone else can tap into it because you can't configure it to add a password. But other than that it's great!

If there's no password, then yes they can tap into it. And guess what, if someone taps into it and downloads illegal material, you are legally responsible because you are sharing your net access.

Not jumping on you, and certainly not judging. Just letting you know.

Turn on the hotspot in QuickSettings. Drag down the notification bar from the top. Click on "Hotspot Active - Click to configure". Click on "Portable Wi-Fi Hotspot Settings". Click on "Configure Wi-Fi Hotspot". Then set the SSID, security type (WPA2 PSK recommended), and password. A nice, secure hotspot for you and only your closest friends.

Extended widgets anyone? Way better because it also allows you to build your own widget which is similar to powerstrip or something like that. Really customizable, and it's not that expensive either.

My Optimus gets very warm when my hotspot is active. Also, does anyone know how much the battery life decreases when the hotspot it active?

Gets hot and uses a lot of battery. That is one of the many reasons why VM blocked it.

*IF* Virgin Mobile/Sprint decides to leave this "hotspot" feature active in the Optimus V (note that is has been removed from the Optimus S via an OTA firmware update).......
you'll be throttled if you use over 2.5GB a month now.

A price hike, and throttling . . . Knew a good thing was only for a limited time...............

Just a clarification;

The hotspot feature was not removed on the OpS. Disabled until paid for, but not removed. Sprint charges $29.99 a month for this feature, and it is specifically advertised with this phone on the Sprint site.

I think just throttling will solve the problem
