Default My phone won't charge!!

I have an LG Optimus V with Virgin Mobile. I plugged it in to charge while I went to sleep like always. I won't up around 7 a.m. to the sound of my phone restarting. Looked at my phone and the battery was almost completely dead. And yet, the little icon indicating it was hooked up to the charger (had the little lightening bolt) but the little animation of the battery filling up wasn't happening. My phone won't charge. I tried taking out my battery and restarting but it didn't work. What should I do?

Are you using the Wall charger or the USB cable?
On USB mine would barely charge or sometimes not at all.

Sigh ,I've been out of my optimus for a week and a half now due to this issue. A replacement battery come today, when I took it out of the mailer it was charged to 70% so I could at least use my optimus again.
I plugged it in to the wall and found out it won't charge, won't even acknowledge that it's plugged in with the lightning bolt icon.

Do you have any other charger to try? I know this comparison seems unlikely.. but

My sister had a Kyocera Loft.. who she thought had messed up the charger "entrance" on the phone.. since it wouldn't recognize her charger, she used my charger (same phone) and it started charging again.

I've never had an optimus but im only suggesting if its possible to try a new charger.

Yep, tried two different chargers. With both, it won't charge unless i hold the connector at the phone side, in some specific way. Definitely a borked charging port, ima see if I can get a new phone out of VMU.

Default I've got the same problem. but worse....

i got a rooted lg optimus V. and recently got a 16 gb Micro sd card. soon afterward it refused to charge. and would continually go through the virgin mobile splash screen every 15 secs.... forever... sometimes when i changed usb chargers with wall chargers it would work... but only to like 60 %... then a few days later... to 40 % and then to about 20%..... and now it will barely get to the home screen .... so i took the Micro SD card out and while my phone was on i did a factory reset... just to eliminate the possibility of a virus... but now no matter what i do... it barely gets to the homescreen for 30 secs and then stops charging and shuts off.... without me touching it... i tried jiggling the mini usb in the charging port and no matter at what angle i put pressure... no lightning charging symbol. i guess i must of dropped it or something... it never get wet... the same chargers work great for my wifes droid 3. even though they have a slightly different voltage output......( by .01) ((odd i know)) and they have a 100ma difference in output... but idk what to do... maybe i should just call LG and get a new one... but the problem about that is that i bought this "like new" from Ebay.... still in the package... had no problems for over 2 months... Please Help

Sounds like the battery to me. You can get a battery for it off ebay for a little over $5 with free shipping. It would be money well spent as you bought it used therefore no warranty from VM.

PS: This is a charging issue, not a ROM or rooting issue so I think it was posted correctly.

If you are the original owner of the phone....
Virgin WILL send you a battery for free (ask for the replacement department when you call) and if the problem is still happening then they will send you another phone as long as it's within a year of purchase (no receipt required). Its actually pretty easy.

Since my replacement phone, I never have any problems with my phone getting really hot, turning on or off randomly, or battery dead in a few hours....and now I have my brightness up, volume up, GPS on, wi-fi and all that stuff.

good luck

I had a charging issue with my first V within 2 weeks of buying it. I took it back to Best Buy for a replacement (one of the few pluses of buying in a store rather than online) and this one I have now has been working flawlessly for almost 3 months now. I think there's a lot of variation with the manufacturing of these phones, so it's a bit of a crap shoot.

Default My Charging solution

When I bought my OV I decided to buy a slightly more powerful battery, as I had gotten it used and was worried about the battery that came with it.
I bought one from Amazon, and it came with a free external charger. When my battery gets really low, I turn off the phone, pop out the battery, pop in a freshly charged one, and put the other battery into the charger. Turn the phone on, 100% charged. Takes a minute or so. Doens't matter if the phone will charge the battery or not. BTW, turns out the battery that came with it is better than the 1600mah battery I bought.
Turns out the charger will do most cell phone batteries, I have a Motorola Razr and charge that battery the same way.
Optimus V, not activated but working great.

Yeah I bought two cheap batteries on eBay and they hold a charge for about half as long as the OEM battery that came with the phone. They're good in an emergency though.

I like the external charger idea. Right now if I drain one battery and then pop in the other I have to wait till that ones fully charged(so I can use it as the backup), then power down and swap batteries so I can charge the nearly dead one.

I have the problem intermittently. The external charger is the way to go.

I got the 2 batteries w/charger off Amazon (I think the brand was Anker) for around $21.oo and it works great. The batteries last as long, if not longer, than the original battery.

Replacing the battery with a new one will not solve this--you will just have two batteries that won't charge. I know this because that is what I tried first--ran out to Batteries Plus and got a Ray-o-vac. Now I have four batteries. The upside is that if they are all charged up I can go for a looong time between charging

The good news is that the problem is not a permanent one--it resolves itself somehow.

Cool

Constantly powering down the phone and tearing off the battery cover does not sound appealing to me at all, sorry. I also need my phone to stay on (so I’m reachable).

I use a (nominally) 5 Ah external battery, which I carry with me in case I need extra power in places without power outlets.

This one also comes highly recommended (for the life of me I can't find the thread here where I got the link) for the Op V. I have it on my wish list and plan on getting it... after I finish saving my Curse Points for a Kindle lol.

I had the same problem. My wall charger quit on me. Luckily I had purchased a backup battery a long time ago when I bought my phone. My car charger worked fine though (slower than wall charger). I've heard of car chargers dying (heck I'm on my 3rd now and have had the phone for 7 months) but not wall chargers. My previous phone (rumor 2) I had for 1 year and never had a problem with the wall charger. As soon as I figured out my wall charger was dead I ran out to get a new one. The new one works great now. I'm thinking it was a connectivity issue between the charger and the phone (the connective thing you plug into the phone). Just buy a new wall charger and you'll be fine.

Default Fix

There is a problem with this phone recognizing what it should do when it starts up with low battery.

How to fix this problem put it in the fridge for a little while then try to charge it again there should be enough charge to let the phone go though its boot properly then.

This worked for my friends phone

Good tip! It doesn't seem like it should work, but it does. Refrigerating a battery will buy you some time. Another method is to boot the phone into recovery, and let it charge while in recovery.

Yeah, same one I got. Still very happy with it. Charges my Optimus V, my Motorola Razr, and my Canon Elph camera.
I guess I am fortunate to be able to turn my cell phone off for one minute, and don't mind popping off the back. I use a dime for that - a cheap back remover. I have the boot animation turned off, so it boots back pretty quickly.

I had that same problem once a few weeks ago, Someone suggested I do a battery pull as I was getting ready to go to the store and wrestle... Lo and behold it worked!

Oh wow you are all so right! LOL I bought the phone at Best Buy... And no I don't go out shopping on black, green, pink or red fridays... lmaooooooo

They are off of my black list today as I had been struggling for a few days now, to get 2 reward zone accounts to merge so I can keep all of my points!! I was getting ready to post all over my feelings (in fact i did post at google plus my sentiments)... I will go and repost to say that they resolved my headache and I am back to being a happy camper again...

But..guess what.. I just revisited the thread and found out that lovemuffin had already done a battery pull, not only that, but her phone was still on, even at a minimum charge, mine was totally dead after a night charging and a couple of extra charging hours with a different cable...

I'm fighting this same problem with my month-old Optimus V. I have used two different batteries, two different wall chargers, and different USB cables. If I leave the phone on a charger for several hours after it gets to 100%, the status bar stops showing the charging icon and shows the regular battery icon, and the battery discharges, down to as low as 16%. If I disconnect it when it gets to 100%, then it will of course work just fine.

I have not tried charging from my computer.

This behavior just started last week. For the first three weeks, it seemed to work fine.

Is your phone rooted or is it stock? Also, have you moved any apps to the sd card in the past week?

Rooted, and I have moved every app I could (that didn't come with the phone) to the SD card during the last two weeks or so. I also have three apps frozen: Where, AirG chat, and Twidroyd.

None of that should have caused a problem with charging unless you deleted something vital, but now that you are rooted try flashing a custom ROM, it will fix the problem if it was caused by a deleted file.
Go here Do not Factory Reset your Rooted Phone
everything you need to know is in there. Make sure you backup the Stock ROM in the recovery(this is called a nandroid backup). Save the Stock nandroid until you know for sure what the problem is.

Some apps will cause excessive battery drain when moved to sd, and the effect is cumulative. Five apps doing that could drain the battery faster than it charges.

Any particular ones? If you have info on why this happens, I'd be interested to know that also.

A lot of it depends on the software environment on your phone, and there's more than a little voodoo to it. For example, PowerAmp drained my battery a few builds back. Moved it to internal memory, and it was fine. Problem vanished in the next build. I use Better Battery Stats from XDA.

Based on limited testing (two days worth), my problem seems to have disappeared when I started using a wall charger with a higher capacity. The LG charger is rated at 0.7A, and I used the one I charge my iPad with (which is rated at 2.0A). My preliminary hypothesis is that the factory charger is a bit marginal and has unpredictable results.

Too soon to tell for sure, I need about a week's worth of data to be confident.

It could be it fits in the port on the phone snugger allowing for better continuity.

I'll bet the data bears out over time, as the higher amperage is actually a higher volume of electricity passing into the device/battery.

I'm thinking that the overall battery life, that is the number of weeks/months it is viable (not the "life" as to how long it retains each charge), could be shortened, though.

The higher capacity should have no effect other than charging faster combined with possibly charging more completely, depending on the limiting circuit in the phone. That's why charging with the USB ports on a computer isn't the best way to go... in general they take longer to charge and possibly won't bring the device to a full charge, as they are limited to 0.5A total (except in the very latest hardware designs). A charger with higher rating will allow the device to charge at the fastest rate allowed by the device current limiting circuitry, and may allow charging to fullest capacity. It may very well be that the stock LG charger was built to a price, not to optimal performance (or they wanted to use the same one that was designed for a lower capacity battery in order to keep costs down). In any event, it never hurts to use one that can furnish more current, because the device will only draw what it has been designed for, unless they had a total idiot doing the circuit work.

Well, after several weeks of testing, I'd have to say the results are interesting. The power supply with the higher amperage rating has always charged the phone, but so has the stock supply... most of the time.

I've tried different batteries, different cables, and different chargers. Just based on what I've seen, I will continue to use the new power supply. No longer having access to test instruments I can't explain why the original one doesn't work some of the time. There's a small chance it could still be a mechanical issue with the phone connector.

So. No conclusion in the short term. If, after several months, the present setup has worked fine, then I'll conclude the OEM charger was a bit flakey, but we will see.

Default Phone not charging all the way/draining

Well my husbands Optimus V is having issues and we have had it less than 3 months! The phone woke me up in the middle of the night chirping Virgin Mobile, Virgin Mobile. I noticed the battery was dead and just assumed he didnt plug it into the wall outlet charger correctly and the battery died over night. I then plugged it into my wall charger (we have the same phone, bought at the same time) was woken up again with the chirping of Virgin Mobile. I then was able to get it to charge to about 58% then I unplugged it and it said it was at 1% and turned off. This happend a few times, at this point I figured the battery was bad. I put his battery in my phone and it charged up to 100% no problem. I put my fully charged battery into his phone and it said it was only at 12% then went to 1% and turned off, I put it back in my phone and it charged right up. He did mention the day before this happend his phone kept locking up, screen going black and got very hot. I am pretty sure that at this point it has nothing to do with the battery since his works just fine on my phone. Any ideas? Sorry for such a long post. Also I bought the phones at BB, do I go to them about the issue or to VM? I only ask as the extended warranty I bought with BB is with that phone and if VM swaps out the phone will BB transfer the warranty to the new phone I woud get from VM? Just want a heads up from my Optimus Family before I go making a bunch of phone calls.....Thanks in advance for your help!

Looks like the phone has problems I'd take to BB and talk to them.

I solved this problem for my phone it simply wouldnt charge. To solve this problem while my phone was booting up i constantly pressed the power button; this caused it to stop its regular boot-up and go into a power saving mode were it could charge without using too much of the battery thus it could charge

Interesting? How many times did you have to press the power button and did you do this on a Optimus V?

Could be the phone itself. The optimus v line had alot of issues but they never recalled the phones like they should have. They left it up to the customers to use their warranty which more than half got pissed and switched phone providers. Your best bet is to restore it to stock then return it to vm

Default working again (for now)

My husband's phone is back to normal(for now). Not sure what I did to get it to start working again, just kept taking the battery out and restarting it over a 2 day period and then it decided to work again. Going to ride it out for now......
