Default moving movies from computer to phone sd card, need help

I have a bunch of AVI movies on my computer i would like to be able to view on my phone. What is the best video type to use? What frame size? other settings? I know I can reduce the frame rate to save memory. The only success i had shows the movie really small on the screen with a black border (it was smaller than non-HQ youtube videos). I have a lot of video converting software but i need help with the setting so i can view it full screen on my phone. Any tips would be appreciated.

I've never had good luck with converting video, but what I do is take the standard avi files on my sd card and use Mobo player from the market. It plays darn near anything! I have a pretty big sd card (16GB) so space isn't a problem for me.
