Question iPhone iMessage/Group MMS shows up as blank MMS

My Optimus V cannot receive iMessage/Group MMS messages from iPhone users. My friends all recently jumped to iPhones and started using Group MMS, which I can best describe as a texting chat room for the iPhone. However, every time they send one, all I get is a blank MMS message.

I'm not sure if this is just me, because I've had plenty of past MMS issues with Virgin Mobile, or if this happens for everyone on VM or even everyone on Android. Who knows, maybe I'm having an issue receiving text-only MMS messages. I can SMS text and send pics (MMS) back and forth with any of these iPhones individually, just not in their "Group MMS."

I'm writing to know if this happens to anyone else before I spend another grueling hour of hell on the phone with VM support trying to reset my MSID...

TIA.

If you would look up the description of that iPhone feature, you would see it is for iPhones only and only for iPhone 4 with group messaging enabled. Using any other type of phone you will not be able to added their group. That means you will not receive their message.

Question

Apparently it works on Blackberrys. I wonder if it's just VM or the Optimus V or does this happen to all Androids? The 4.0.0 version of Handcent lists in its changelog that it now supports iPhone Group MMS, but that doesn't work either.

IPhones and VM Optimus V's don't play well together. They don't get picture MMS most times from IPhones as well. Especially if there on the AT&t network. That, and we are on CDMA and EVDO rev A and their not. Put it all together and all you usually can get from IPhones is text mesages.

At first I loved the concept of $25/month cell service with Virgin Mobile.... but I'm really getting tired of the basic functions of the phone, e.g. calling, texting, MMS, etc., not working... </rant>

This isn't universally true, though. My wife's iphone and my Optimus V play pretty well together. We send each other texts and picture messages all the time. Hers work most of the time with my phone. Every now and then she sends me one that the Optimus thinks is a movie rather than a jpeg. It "plays" the picture for 30 seconds or so and then it goes black. She is a long time AT&T customer. I'm too cheap to pay $90 a month for a cell phone.

I've had VM 2+ years now and other than an instance here or there I've not had any extended problems with service. When I had AT&T for 3 months I had more problems with outages than I have with VM.

I hear you guys. Mine actually works fine with all other phones at the moment, except for the Group MMS thing from iPhones... well, actually any non-picture MMS from iPhones.

The last time I called into VM I asked how many times I've called. They told me my account showed 11x. I've only had their service for 14 months now and I've had periods of days/weeks where either the phone or the text messaging or the picture messaging didn't work...

As previously stated that group mms is an iphone thing. If it works on other phones that is extra, not to be expected. You can't really fault VM for something that isn't supposed to work on their system/phone when it doesn't work on their system/phone.

..the funniest thing about Apple making this "feature" proprietary is its insistence on not allowing flash and using HTML5 on their platform because it is not an open standard.

bigger problem is adobe will soon not allow anyone to use flash, everyone is going to html5.

You can always join your friends get a VM iPhone. Obviously, that would mean leaving this wonderful community here...

Were you able to find a solution for this?! I'm desperate!! It seems like people are able to fix it by downloading Group SMS Pro or Handcent, but neither of those work for me. I still get a blank text. I'm on Virgin Mobile as well. PLEASE HELP!!

On Christmas day I got 3 MMS texts than were blank when opened. Probably Merry Christmas messages. Have no idea if they were from iPhones or not. Two were from people not in my contact list so don't know who they were from either. More crappy VM service...

It isnt a vmu limitation, it is an iphone feature that isn't fully compatible with android.

People with other providers have seemed to workaround the issue by downloading Go SMS Pro or Handcent, but neither of those apps fixes the issue for me. Not sure if that's a VM issue, a phone issue, or something else?

I am having this same problem. Just got the phone 5 days ago and every time I open a group text, it shows up as a white rectangle using Handcent. This is using the suggested solution of retrieve app, group thread, etc. SMS Pro isn't working for me either even when using the suggested solution of switching the settings to include iPhone.

Maybe I am doing something wrong? My phone is rooted and running the tagged mod if that helps any. I haven't tried any of the solutions on the original mod but that shouldn't make a difference should it?

--edit--

It seems like a lot of issues I'm finding online have to do with threading the group into one thread or replying to the group text. My issue is even more basic, I can't even open the MMS texts from iPhones.

--edit--

I may have found a solution. So even though I have never had an iPhone, I do have an iPad which means that my phone number was listed under my Apple account. I deleted it now. Hopefully this will mean that my friends' iPhones will no longer recognize my number as an Apple Product and send group texts via MMS instead of iMessage.

Will update to confirm if this works.

I have the same issue with a group text from an iPhone. Does anyone know (not speculate) if this is a problem with all carriers and android phones or is it just VM and/or certain phones? Thanks.

Product and send group texts via MMS instead of iMessage.

I've been having this issue for years and today I finally found a solution, so I feel it's my civic duty to share what I did with others. So I did two things that resulted in being able to receive iPhone group texts (and receive them in the single string), so it's impossible to say which step was the difference maker but at this point I'm just happy it works.
#1 I logged into my Apple account (had to dig up my ID and password) and deleted my phone number from my account information. I had read on this thread that it can make a difference.
#2 I downloaded the Go SMS Pro App. I altered the settings of this app slightly by go to Settings>Send and Receive Settings> (to the bottom) check MMS Group Chat

It appears that the phone is still receiving the blank texts but then immediately converts them into a single group message string.
It's not perfect but it sure beats getting endlessly frustrating blank iPhone group messages. I hope it works for you too!
