Default Can't text special characters

When ever I try to text ANY special characters, the character itself comes up as a ? and a space is placed between each character in the entire text, even when I text other androids or myself. Like, when I text myself

Hablo Español

it comes up as

H a b l o E s p a ? o l

and furthermore, when other people text me special characters, it'll come up as

Hablo Espa?ol

Thanks!

Notsure

This is due to longstanding limitation of the U.S. implementation of SMS (Short Message Service; the texting-by-phone protocol), going back to those times when bandwidth was really expensive/limited, even for the big telcos.

The thinking apparently was something along those lines: since U.S. residents can speak or write absolutely no language other than English (riiiiiiiiiiiiight? ), it would save some space if text messages would only use 7 bits per character, just like the ancient ASCII standard. Since absolutely no letters beyond the basic A-Z are covered by ASCII, it is impossible to use it to properly write Spanish, French (Hello, Quebec!) or most other Latin-based languages. (And you can completely forget about Cyrillic, Arabic, Hebrew, Chinese etc. etc.)

So there you have it … Some 20 years later we live in a much more globalized world, and nothing much has changed in the good olde (sic) US of A. (Europeans have long been able to text proper español, français, íslenska etc. etc.)

I’m afraid there is little you can do other than ask your friends to completely eschew any “special” characters.

Default Cannot send/receive special characters in SMS

I've been experiencing this issue since I bought my phone. I'm not sure if additional language packs are needed, so I wish to clarify any information here on this forum.

I am unable to successfully send and receive special characters in my text messages. When I attempt to send a special character (e.g. ñ), it appears fine on my screen, but my recipient sees it as a question mark. If I use even one special character in a sentence, it causes the whole message to be spaced apart.

For example. I send a message that looks like this:

Hèy! This message has a special character!

The person I send it to sees it like this:

H ? y ! T h i s m e s s a g e h a s a s p e c i a l c h a r a c t e r !

I receive messages the same exact way. I thought maybe it was because I was getting special characters from an iPhone, but my brother also has an LG Optimus V and it looks the same when I get special characters from him. This happens in the default SMS app and in third-party apps (I currently use GoSMS).

My phone is NOT rooted and has never been previously rooted.

Thanks for any help you can provide. I really appreciate it!

I'm rooted, benslgdroid, but I feel like, because of what Thorsten said, it doesn't really make a difference....

Thanks for your help!

This problem is easily fixed. Open the Messages app, go to Settings and select Input Mode - Unicode. Fixed!

What “Messages app” do you mean?

When I launch the stock texting app, “Messaging”, (the one with the green, rectangular speech bubble icon with a white smiley) and then hit MenuSettings, I only see the following entries:
  • Delete Old Messages [✓]
  • Text Message Limit
  • Multimedia Message Limit
  • Auto-Retrieve [✓]
  • Notifications [✓]
  • Select Ringtone ▼
  • Vibrate ▼
There is no Input Mode option.

This isn't an app issue this is because in the united States there are very few special characters used so SMS will not send with special characters. If you are able to send one chances are you have a 3rd party messaging app and it is sending the message via their servers and not your carrier.
