Default screen won't come back after screen timeout

My LG Optimus is going into screen timeout and then the screen is not coming back on. I have to take the battery out to get it back, I will not charge either Other than that everything works just fine. No cracks, scratches, and it's less than a year old. I have purchased a new one but would like to use this one to put in my waterproof phone case for snorkeling. I would like to either find out why the screen won't come back on or how to disable screen timeout to keep me from having to remove the battery.

Things I have tried:
Pulling the battery out and holding the power button
Hard Reset of the phone.

You can't really disable the screen timeput, but you can set it as high as 30 minutes. Go into settings. Click display. Then screen timeout and select the desired time from the list. I can't imagine you needing a timeout longer than 30 minutes.
