Does the "LGMobile update program" update android? I thought it only updates the firmware to the v10d.

*Edit*: I just tried, and I'm getting a message saying I have the most current version, which is v10d.

I'd be surprised if thy released the update over a long weekend.

Probably just firmware, but I make a habit of running it every month or so and seeing what I get.

I have no idea how OS versions get updated... on my buddy's tablet, he just powered it on one day and a popup asked "Do you wish to update to 3.2"... no clue what happens to our phones.

I hope it comes soon.

It probably won't. I've asked TELUS on their support page on twitter and they replied with

Hi, the 2.3 update will be pushed to your phone as soon as it's released by LG for the Telus carrier. Eric

Maybe later in the month hopefully, but as it is now I wouldn't expect an update this week.

MikeP: Hello, Karendar. Can I help you with anything today?

Karendar: Hello, I own an LG shine plus and have read many rumors about an Andriod update to either 2.2(Froyo) or 2.3 (Gingerbread), the latest rumor for a release date was September 6th. Is there a current release date we can expect the update?

MikeP: Currently only select model phones may have an update. To check whether your phone has an update please follow the below instructions:
1. download and install the mobile support tool on your computer.
2. Once the software is downloaded and installed on your computer you will need to take your phone out of mass storage mode.
-To take your phone out of mass storage mode on your phone you need to go to MenuāSettingsāSD card and phone storage-āRemove the check mark from Mass storage only.
3. With the mobile support tool open on your computer connect the phone to the computer.
4. Select Start update on the mobile support tool.

MikeP: The only information that we have been provided about an update is that it will be available before the end of the year.

FAIL FAIL FAIL!!!!!!!

Sigh. To think I gave this phone a 5 star review on the Telus smartphone page. Now I want to go back and give it a 1 star review for the update delays.

Could this also contribute to the delay?

Here are the information we have about an update for your device so far. You need to understand that the upgrade comes from LG. We do not have any details until an update is released by the manufacturer. I hope I was able to help. Eric

I've noticed after you said that Telus took off the Galaxy S 3G off their website for my region at least.....

That being said, I remember the rumor for this upgrade was LATE September, so possibly before the end of the month we'll see some kind of hint to an update perhaps.

guys, firmware IS android. android IS firmware. one and the same.

the software update upgrades android 2.1 to a later version of 2.1, but we're all mostly running that already and it's been out since feb.

2.2 or 2.3 which supposedly are coming out this month (at least on telus according to a leak) are still not showing and are now officially late. it was supposed to be announced last thursday if I read those leaked phone-cam images correctly.

read the lg shine plus upgrade column in these pics, particularly the first one. http://mobilesyrup.com/2011/08/02/leaked-telus-roadmap-shows-upcoming-iphone-5-blackberry-sony-ericsson-and-samsung-devices/

I really want it for this phone, but am not expecting it. that or a nice hacked rom with apps2sd enabled (Ext version would be even better than google version fwiw).

I disagree!

Firmware is lower-level microcode involved in the implementation of machine instructions. The boundary between hardware and software

Android is an operating system based upon the Linux kernel specifically designed for mobile devices.

I often do firmware updates on computers to address issues with hardware. That does not mean I am making any changes to Windows, Linux, OSX or whatever is being used as an operating system of the computer I update the firmware on.

They are different.

hiya burned, nice to see a local :-)

they are different on a pc. on an android phone they are all firmware, as is true with most handheld devices.

I was on the firmware development team for a successful semiconductor company with a major standalone hardware product.

On that company's devices there is one large application that runs on the devices. It handles everything from low level usb stacks, chip-to-chip memory management and resource management, super low level stuff right up to the on-screen UI and even an entire local web-hosted remote management interface complete with graphics. That is all on every device they sell.

And that is called the firmware. It is imho closer to being the equivalent of an entire operating system on a phone compared to a standalone computer with the operating system being loaded off disk into ram where it runs as a program.

however the distinction is still of course a matter of perspective.

you're quite correct when it comes to computers, but again let's look at routers. like linksys, dlink routers etc that most of us own for wifi access at home etc. you can do a firmware update on those. is the firmware only the low level stuff that lets it's higher level operating system and ui interface interact with the hardware (which is my vague interpretation of your definition of hardware)? No, the firmware on these devices is the entire application that does literally everything. it's the lowest level to the highest level parts of device.

I claim the common distinction is that firmware is code that is stored in rewritable memory on a device but is not forgotten when powered off. whether the code is a low lying layer that does only low level things or if the code makes your coffee and changes diapers, it makes no difference, because that would actually be defining the term based on what it does, not how it is stored. there is hardware, software, and firmware which is sort of half and half. software is forgotten without power and needs to be reloaded. hardware is always there and can't be changed or rewritten in any way shape or form. firmware is able to be written to but doesn't get lost when powered off. in a pc, the os is software. in an android phone, the os is firmware. in a commodore 64, the os was in hardware (rom).

So by that same definition, android is not to be considered as a distinction from "firmware" on an android phone. android is a part of the firmware, as is the bootloader, the recovery, the kernel, and even the radio. This was my point for mentioning it in the first place as users here were claiming firmware was updated but not android, or vice versa. That distinction can't truly be made and I suspect google engineers would agree with me (but I'll have to ask to make sure LoL).

Certainly as an android dev I've never heard of that distinction from any other android devs, but of course everyone has different experiences.

Not trying to dispute things, just pointing out how android phones are actually different from the example you cited in defense of your point of view.

as always, imho, ymmv, and so on :-)

I'm always happy to be proven wrong. but it will take proof in this case.

Cheers

Also, I suppose that if popular usage is the definition of what a word means, a google search for "is android firmware" (not in quotes...) tells us that android, the OS, is actually firmware:

cool, just trying to make sure we're all talking about the same thing here :-)

yea.... there are now three out of four dates in that spreadsheet photo I posted above that have been missed by telus for the new shine plus update.

If LG is the one that is late delivering the update to telus then telus should be making it very clear that they were told a date by LG and that LG has failed here clearly. But if telus continues denying that there ever was a release date, despite clear factual evidence posted above, then I would say the blame lies clearly with Telus for not delivering on the deadline they created themselves for this phone's update.

Or they can just cover themselves completely by saying that leak was a complete hogwash that was never an official Telus announcement...

The leak may be fake, but this is from LG. So sometime in this week or the next we SHOULD see an update, but we probably won't.

Considering what LG told me further up (END OF YEAR!!) I strongly doubt it... Would have been easier to learn Android SDK programming and rebuild a Gingerbread version myself. haha

So.. I guess we will have to wait. By the way I left my HTC Desire for this phone. I like how much more solid it feels and I like the slider better than trying to type on an LCD. If it had white back lighting it would be almost perfect.. Battery life is three times the HTC and the screen on HTC scratches VERY easily.

You have no idea how how annoying it is to install Google+ without app2SD. Oh wait, those of you that did install Google+ probably do, because it takes up 24.5 or so MB of space out of the little space we have. I dont get why LG wont push this phone 2.2 at least, the ALLY which is the SAME PHONE NEARLY JUST BLACK in the states has it, yet our phone doesn't have that.

Oh I have an idea alright... had to uninstall pretty much everything just to get it on. The last update to G+ really took up a lot of room.

It would have been different if we had 1GB of internal space. That would have made a world of difference. 256MB is worse than bare minimum.

Very subtle differences between the Ally, indeed. Although trying to fit a ZAGG InvisibleShield for the Ally on the Shine Plus is an interesting (read: frustrating) challenge.

Anyone notice that in LG PC Suite IV it indicates there IS an update available, but the LGMobile Update program says "your phone is up to date?" Talk about a teaser/mixed messages.

BTW: I use Link2SD (free) which helps squeeze more apps on the phone SO much! It's not perfect, but it's a huge help. You just have to create a second (FAT) partition on your SD card manually and off you go. Requires root, though...

pc suite iv tells me that too but then tells me that the update is the one I already have installed (and have had installed for a long time now, months old).

so I think maybe pc suite iv just sucks at identifying what fw you have on your phone. maybe if it's rooted it gets it wrong or something.

by the way, that rooted sd storage thing is new to me, I'll read about it, thanks!

Just installed this, looking good so far, since the main reason I am looking for 2.2/2.3 is to install more apps.

Not sure, but its the end of September, so if we want to put apps on our SD card to some degree we're going to need to root our phones.

Nope, very easy to root with Universal Androot (or apparently z4root). Root/unroot with one click.

And Oct 2, still no sign of an update... Bloody Telus, bloody LG.

Installed Universal Androot, rooted it, installed Link2SD, created a 2nd partition (tried FAT,FAT32,EXT2). No luck so far. Getting: "Invalid Argument" creating the mount script.

Digging around on other forums I found you have to play around with the new partition (make it primary, set it active) etc. Still no luck.

Gonna dig around some more.

EDIT - Spoke too soon, mounted now after a reboot and it told me to reboot again to make sure the script works. WOOT!

Mad **** you, LG.

LG is really pissing me off. The nearly-identical VS740 (LG Ally) got updated to 2.2 back in January. Janu****ingary! Well it's ****ing OCTOBER now and still no update. WTF, LG? What, because we're in Canada we don't count? Well then **** YOU! My next phone will not be from LG.

Last 2-3 attemps to contact LG yielded very vague answers... As in "It'll come when it'll be ready and approved by Telus". The least vague answer was "By the end of the year." but then again, never specified WHICH YEAR...

I still look every couple of days or so, but I'm not holding my breath.

Angry LG Shine Plus Android 2.3 Update--LG AND TELUS SHOULD BE ASHAMED!!!

Well first we were told that we would be receiving the Android 2.2 update in July and we just had to be patient like our fellow LG Ally users in the USA and eventually LG would reward us all with an update (DID NOT HAPPEN!!!). Then they dangled the next carrot in front of our noses by telling us that since we were good patient Canadians if we were willing to wait until September they would reward us all for our patience by upgrading us not to Android 2.2 but to Android 2.3 (DID NOT HAPPEN!!!).

LG and Telus you should be ashamed of the way you have treated your Canadian customers. All I want from LG as a customer are timely updates to your products and the respect of not being lied to as to when I will be receiving those updates, and from Telus because we were willing to purchase the LG Shine Plus which was exclusively sold by Telus that I can count on support from my service provider and confidence that you are working on my behalf to ensure that my cellphone product is at least maintained at the highest level of the Android Operating System that it can support. I feel as a loyal Telus customer that is what I expect and what I am entitled to from my service provider.

New mobile phone software is available
Please update your software.
If not connected, connect the device now to start update.
If the update is done later, connect the device at that time.

I can't run this now because I have to take off. I will give it a shot later tonight and let you guys know.

Thanks, LG/Telus. Better late than never, I guess! And I was about a day away from giving up hope and upgrading to a newer phone. Now, I may wait... Maybe. THANKS, LG/Telus... ;p

Not showing on the product page, not showing on the official LG page yet.

Took them long enough. Is it a coincidence that Android 4.0 just launched today?

I did the update last night. I un-rooted, reformatted the microSD card (backup first), reset to factory defaults, did the update, reset to factory defaults again and it seems to be working for me so far.

It's a bit laggy, imho, but it's no Snapdragon CPU either.

Phone is no more laggy as it was before. So far "Move to SD" isn't helping me a whole lot. Nothing beats a rooted phone with Links2SD.

I find the wireless drops, but connects quicker when joining the network. Other than that, wasn't worth the 1 year wait.
