Default USB connection issues

I'm having problems getting my PC to recognize my phone after the update. I've tried some of the suggestions posted elsewhere (unplug, change setting, plug back in; make sure it's plugged into phone first) and I've also re-downloaded the USB drivers from LG's website, but none of these things have fixed the issue. I've also been battling slow charge too (but the battery life is great, so that's not as much of an issue).

Is anyone else having problems getting a USB connection to their computer?

Also a noob question... if I were to brick my phone, voiding warranty, couldn't I just run it over with the car and then get it replaced? How would verizon know it was bricked?
There are ways. I did it, twice as a warranty with no cost to me. Pm me and I'll give you help with returning under warranty.

I had to open the USB connection type menu and reselect the option. For example, when I opened it Mass Storage was already selected but the computer wasn't seeing it. I just tapped Mass Storage again and it connected right away.

Same problem here... I updated drivers from LG and still couldn't see my SdCard but after a PC restart and USB reconnect, the problem seems to have fixed itself. don't know why but not complaining. I advise to keep trying. I also downloaded Driver Manager and let it do a scan and update while phone was attached via Mass Storage. Maybe that would help.

I can't freeze or remove anything without loosing boot. As well my battery life is way down. And it was bad under 2.3 I have to charge it 3 times a day, and I don't use it, except for a few texts and a couple of call. Disabling Data, hasn't improved it much. I have pushed the .cab file several times as I found out the hard way I can't freeze or remove anything. I'm leaving it until someone unlocks the BL and deOdexes, and builds a rom. The battery thing is ridiculous.

This is th, fix.

1. Make sure the usb is plugged into your phone before you connect to the pc.
2. When you connect to the pc, swipe down on the notification bar on the phone and clock usb connected.
3. Mass storage is selected by default; press it again.

... The pc will then recognize the phone.

It's a flaw with this device that's existed since it was released.

Sounds like you might have a faulty battery, most of us are getting improved battery life and even on GB I could easily go all day with just a couple texts and/or calls.

That's my problem; when my phone its connected to my computer (using original OEM cable, plugging into phone first then computer), it doesn't even sow as being connected. I just get the "slow charge" notification.

Give this a try.

Go to 'System Settings' > Connectivity. Then, tick the 'Ask On Connection'. Then, go to 'USB Connection Type' and choose Mass Storage.

Now, these two things contradict each other, but you generally want mass storage when you're connected to the PC, so that will set it as default. Then, ticking that box will force the phone to ask you which you want, which essentially takes step 2 from my previous instructions out of the equation. We can trick the phone into bypassing the flaw in the OS that doesn't 'see' the connection by making it bring the steps for the solution to us.

Let us know if that doesn't work.

This slow charge crap is killing me. Yesterday my battery ran down to about 23% so I plugged it in to the oem cable and charger to an AC outlet and left it alone (please note I have a 3800 mAh battery), 5 hours later I grabbed my phone to head out and it was at 67% battery. I had only added about 12 apps to it since flashing the official ICS .Cab, all utility apps. This morning, without using my phone, or even turning the screen on, the battery has lost 7% in an hour.

I said it before, and I'll say it again, I can not wait until aokp is working!

Fyi Samsung will give you a $100 gift visa card for your spectrum if you buy a GS3 or note 2. Gazelle and Verizon will give you $66, not that I am, but I did check...

I have figured out PART of the problem causing my Spectrum to go haywire while charging. It' one particular charger. I have a charging station in my kitchen, where I plug my phone in, usually at night. We have two different USB chargers there. One of them, as soon as I plug the Spectrum in, it starts opening apps and messaging, etc on it's own. I just tried it three times. Plugging that charger in makes the phone act on it's own. The other charger, simply charges. I have a 3rd USB charger in the house that also causes no ill effects. Nor does the one in my car. So, the charger itself is PART of the problem, but has never caused any issues until the ICS swap. And from other complaints, I'm guessing there's something wrong with the USB port on the phone. My phone charges normally, and battery life is easily 2x-3x what it was 4 days ago. But there is something wrong with the software.

My next step is to pull those chargers out, and compare their stats. The one that's causing the problems, is also the slower of the two. And from the sounds of it, people are having issues when plugging into laptops, etc. I'm guessing the USB port or phone does NOT like low amperage charging sources.

And for the record, I've ALWAYS had problems getting my laptop to recognize that the Spectrum was plugged in. This is not new with ICS. And plugging into a USB port on a computer, has never been a viable option for me to charge my Spectrum. It won't charge that way...not if I use the phone at all. It'll drain faster than it charged. (that was pre-ICS though).

Mine charges from 20% to 100% in less than 2 hours. Have you tried factory reset, reinstalling using the .cab method, etc.?

For those having Swype issues, I just installed the latest Swype beta from their website and it's much more responsive (and it has themes! ). I had to freeze the Swype version already on the phone but otherwise easy to install and get running.

Yeah, unfortunately all that still didn't work. Something must've been screwed up with the USB driver on the phone, because I went ahead and did a factory reset and that solved the problem. I don't know what the deal was, but for whatever reason the phone would refuse to recognize that it was connected to anything besides a slow-charge until after the factory reset.

Also, as a point of interest, the charging speed on my phone improved after the factory reset as well, and my wife's Spec (which pulled the update this morning) has no charging/USB issues either.

Plugged the Spectrum into the charger last night even though it didn't need it. I used the charger that doesn't act wonky, and had no issues this morning. For some reason now, after ICS that one charger is useless to me! It says it's 800mA. It's also the slowest charger I have. The "good one" is an LG branded charger, and says it's 0.7A, and much faster....but more important doesn't make the Spectrum go crazy.

Getting a glitching screen. Never seen this before on an android. If this was a windows machine it looks like the video card is going out. Is that even possible on an Android?

Auto brightness does not work at all.

Wifi automatically turns on when I've turned it off multiple times.

Improvements. Big list but best was fixing the cursor so I can actually see where I'm typing. (I know dev Roms fixed this but I could never get them to stop rebooting.)

Still thinking this might be a hardware problem....other opinions/ advice welcome

Try a factory restore and see if that helps. If not, push v7 to the phone. There's a lot there that indicates a bad flash or bad data.

I plugged into an LG charger today with battery at 34 %. Charged full in less than 2 hours. No charging issues here.

Glad to see you got it figured out. For the fun of asking, what brand charger is the "wonky" one?

It took me a while to figure how to use auto-brightness. Apparently I had to set an optimal brightness setting, basically the highest setting I want to put the brightness at, then it would do its thing. I mean, I click auto-brightness and it gives me a scale, what the flip is that all about? lol

Haha I didn't even realize that the slider did anything when I clicked auto... now I can't decide how I want it set.

So although I thought my problems were solved, apparently they aren't. My phone still doesn't detect a USB cord being attached to it (other than the "slow charge" state); I've successfully pushed the .cab, done multiple factory resets, and although it might connect to my computer once after the reset, all subsequent attempts do not work. I've also tried plugging my phone into other computers, and the phone still doesn't recognize that it's connected to a computer. No apps are disabled or frozen, it's set to "Mass Storage" for default, it's not set to ask for connection type, and debugging mode is enabled.

Any suggestions at all? It seems like it's a driver problem, but specific to my phone (my wife's phone works fine).

No idea....off brand or unbranded Chinese. It's always been my last choice, and I usually only used it if my wife had her phone plugged into the "good" or faster one. But it is VERY odd that it only started making the Spectrum go crazy after ICS.

While I was reading your post I was sitting here thinking that I would uninstall all the lg drivers and software off the computer and reinstall, but then your end statement that your wifes phone works kind of blew a hole in my theory. I would still try it though.

Hey BigKahuna, I'm glad your phone is finally acting right since I know you've had so many issues with yours since you've owned it. I was curious if your voice call have improved since that is one of the advertised updates.

Reset your phone with the cable attached to the computer. There is a glitch where the phone doesn't always turn on adb when the battery is at 100%, but it does turn on adb when the phone starts. I will be adding this comment to the master thread.

Yea that's unique to this phone (and maybe others). Phones like Motorola don't let you set auto off a brightness level, they move the brightness higher and lower than the level selected with auto off.

Haven't really been able to test voice quality. Or haven't had any comments. I'll ask my wife, she's the biggest complainer. I probably talk to her as much as anyone else. But even people I don't know, are constantly asking me to repeat myself on the Spectrum. I'll definitely pay attention and see if the complaints and "say whats" go down in number.

So far everything is good. It's like having a new phone.

ive experienced a situation like this and it could very well be your phones charging port or the charger itself. just putting that out there.

update. nevermind. this was already answered. i was referring to the phone going haywire with certain chargers. this phone has always been picky.

i didnt see anything about this but is anyone experiencing random restarts when trying to do certain things. i.e. searching in the play store or killing apps in advanced task killer or apps like that. ive been getting it about every 20 minutes when actually using apps. its annoying and i used to have this with GB but not nearly as often and when doing more complicated things. i updated with the .cab from v6 because other methods wouldnt work and am rooted with very minimal apps installed and nothing frozen or tweaked yet.

Get rid of advanced task killer. You're more then likely doing more harm then good. You've got two sets of task killers going (atk and the internal one that has been built into android since froyo). It's like running two anti-virus's on your computer at the same time. Yeah, it may work and make you feel safe, but it's doing havoc on your system and it's resources.

If you really want to tweak how long apps stay around go to settings -> developer options - background process limit and change it there.

Thanks for the info neph. i was aware that there was a built in task killer but didnt think of it like running two AV programs. Ill remove it and see how the phone behaves. definitely did make me feel warm inside having both and i always left the auto kill feature off. hopefully this is the cause of my random reboots and ill post again once ive had some time with it, to let you know if it seems solved.
also ive had issues with the lite version and pro version of rom toolbox suddenly stopping while using it. at this point i removed but do you think this is related?

Default Random ringtones

So, my phone was working fine and I probably wouldn't have even bothered with the update but my notification alarm went off at like 3 or 4 in the morning and kept going off repeatedly and I couldn't get it to stop so I blame not being fully awake for my decision to capitulate and hit ok when it told me to update the phone. I haven't noticed any big differences in the last couple of days other than one. My ringtones are random. I had customized ringtones for various people and my work. They were completely mixed up by the update so I said, "No big, I'll fix them." I went through and reset everything to the way I wanted and it worked fine, until I had to turn the phone off to reset my unresponsive bluetooth (a problem I had before the update). It re-randomized my set ringtones again. Also, it is constantly (before and after the update) asking me which app I want to be the default for "this activity" I always check the box and choose what i want and I swear I have to do that about 25% of the time when I want to open a web browser. Anyone else with this problem? I was using Zedge app for my ringtones.

This sounds like database corruption. As much as I hate to say it, you're probably looking at a factory reset. The more we get into this V7 build, the more it feels like it was rushed. On that note thou, you're going 2 full product cycles up in one swing. Bugs are known to happen, it just sucks how many we're running into on a daily basis.

For those of you guys getting a slow charge message, blow out the usb connection port on the phone and the charger and you'll notice a faster charge time. I got this message and used an air gun at work to fix this, but just blowing in it a few times should resolve these issues. Someone else passed this along to me in a different thread.

My ring tones also kept changing, finally figured out it was my profiles in Volume Ace. You have to go in and set the ring tones in there. I used it before and didn't have a problem, maybe it's a new feature or only works on ICS...

Hmm. I wonder why they may have rushed it? Don't suppose it had anything to do with the constant complaining, BBB reports and stuff?

I wonder if a v8 update is in the works to finish where they left off?

I asked this somewhere else. It looks like as long as there is a network close enough detect, it'll turn on. That being said, from what I gather, it doesn't actually use that much power. Much less than data does. The only way to keep it off is airplane mode.

Go to wifi in settings, press the button to the left of the home button and click advanced. Make sure 'keep wifi on during sleep' is set to always. That will keep you connected, even while the phone is in standby.

I think he's trying to keep it off, not on.

I had this problem BEFORE the update. Now my ring/notification tones stay set.

Oh yea, he is, huh. I only encounter the restarting wifi because I'm using juice defender. That app seems to forget I use location based wifi, so I constantly have to restart it to get it to turn the wifi off.

ok. ive factory reset multiple times and tried many different situations where the phone has nothing installed or some apps or a lot of apps, also while using a system app or a user app or just trying to create shortcuts on the home screen. the phone is rooted and on stock home. during all of the different situations ive mentioned i have had tons of random reboots. it seems like anytime the phone has to think a little it will get overloaded and shut down. not usually for the same things everytime it happens but sometimes it is back to back to back and sometimes i get some good fun use out of a game or an app and it doesnt do it at all. factory resetting just isnt fixing this at all. any suggestions?

In your situation, I would power down the phone.
I would remove the SIM card, the microSD card, and the battery.

I would insert all three.

I would boot back up, I'd take everything off the microSD card I wanted to keep.

I would do a format of the microSD card using the FORMAT option of the phone (do not use a PC).

I would reboot the phone.

I would see if you have any random reboots after that. Only if I were sure of no random reboots would I start adding applications back onto the device.

If I saw random reboots, I suppose I would a) ask VZW for a replacement SIM card, and b) try a different microSD card in the phone.

These things would never have crossed my mind. I really appreciate the advice because at this point I have tried many things and researched many forums and sites. I will be sure to try the first suggestion and see how that goes over the next day or so. If that doesn't work, I will be giving verizon a call about the SIM and trying one of my other SD cards that didn't come with the phone. It does seem like the SD I'm using can be a little quirky or atleast has been once and a while in the past. I'll post back my results so if someone else is plagued by this they know to take these steps. And thanks for responding. I was starting to wonder if I was the only one who had this(obviously not) after the update(and sometimes before).
