Question Post Noob questions here

As a noob myself, I'm finding it hard to get answers without muddling up the threads where the devs and senior members are working so hard at more advanced issues. If you have noob questions, no matter how trivial, post them here. I know they will help me, and hopefully others. And who knows, maybe the bigshots will drop in every now and then to offer advice.
Currently running rooted LG Spectrum ICS OTA

First Question: Anyone install the emoji plugin for GoLauncher and sees only Chinese symbols on screen when using emoticons in text? I followed market directions EXACTLY to install twice...

Very trivial forum related question (not device related): how do I post screenshots as full size instead of thumbnail size?

After choosing the picture, it doesn't ask you if you want it full size or not??

No, tapatalk doesn't always do that. It's photo and forum specific.

Default Another quick question

I was reading the instructions on flashing Eclipse, starting from stock V7:
Get stock ICS ->
run pwnage tool which roots, installs CWM recovery,
and unlocks boot loader (all in one pass)
-> boot into CWM, wipe data and install eclipse A3 -> reboot phone.

When you say... "boot into CWM", do you mean to use ROM Manager to do this by clicking on "reboot into recovery"

Edit: Sorry, I know this should have gone to the "all things root" section. If I haven't gotten a reply by this evening, I'lll repost there.

Correct, that is really the only function of rom manager you want to use on this phone.

There are better options than ROM Manager for that, from my experience you're better off without even installing that app. I use Titanium Backup (option to reboot to recovery in menu) or there's Quick Boot, Hot Reboot, etc.

Rom toolbox has a shortcut option called rebooter that lets you reboot the device, the rom or into recovery. It's all I ever use.

When I did it last night I did the button method (power off, then hold power+vol down until factory reset message comes up, then power button twice). No app needed

Follow this exactly. It will update you to the new radio files and unbrick you at the same time. Good luck.

I've used that shortcut for sometime myself mrB. Definitely a nice little feature. Only thing that i hate about it is sometimes it likes to open rom toolbox with it. But it's not that big of a deal but I would prefer that it would just open the reboot menu and never actually open rom toolbox as well.

I've had that happen too, but it's generally when the app was in active cache because I used it prior to the shortcut.

Default another Noob Question

I've been working with the LG Spectrum the last week or so, trying to activate the phone with Iusacell (a cellphone carrier in Mexico). The network is so old that they only offer EVDO as maximum internet connection speed. I also had to rearrange my MEID/ESN to be able to register the device with them.

At last I got Voice working, but I still cant get neither SMS nor 3g running.

I've seen that to make the Spectrum work with 3g on pageplus or cricket, after configuring with QPST all the connection parameters, you need to use LG Android Data Assistant to enable data in NV mode. Ive installed this app but cant seem to find this option available. Also an app called Android Messaging thats used to be able to receive SMS/MMS for cricket doesnt work.

so my NOOB question is: ┐How do I enable data in NV mode?

Im currently using official unrooted ICS 4.0.1 in the spectrum.

There is a bug with the USB connectivity on the ICS update. reboot the phone with the USB cable plugged in, then (re)select what type of connection you want for the USB. This normally will work.

thanks. i figured it out. with the way this new update looks you can't tell there are more options way down at the bottom of the page sometimes. (like i said - i HATE the way this new system looks!) so all i had to do was go to settings/connectivity/ and change it from 'internet' to 'mass storage'. pity i didn't 'see' that there was more stuff in the settings. :-/

(rebooting while connected to USB did nothing.)

I assumed you were having the normal bug - USB connection not registering for anything more than slow charge. If you do get that then reboot

General forum noob question: How do I request that a thread of mine be deleted? I know I can just edit the OP title to say "delete this" but I thought there was a more direct way to do it.

Default What is the "radio"

Another noob question from the eternal noob (I DO actually research these questions on the net first buy I always seem to get more straight forward answers from you guys. Thanx)
Q: When discussing the internal cell phone workings and you refer to the "radio", what exactly are you talking about?

Also, anyone got a link to the place on this forum where the emoticon codes are listed. I only know a couple of them by heart but I'd like the complete list. I'm talking about the ones where you put a certain word or phrase inside the the colons like this one...

The radio is the hardware that receives/transmits from the phone. RIL files are what android uses to get the hardware to communicate with the software.

Default Keep the warrantee when sending Spectrum to VZW

My phone's earpiece is broken, VZW is sending me a replacement Spectrum. I am on AOKP4.1. What do I need to do so that VZW doesn't know that I was on non-stock software? (they will charge me $299 as I loose the warrantee if they find out on their 100 point testing that I was on a custom firmware)

Flash the cab and then do a factory reset. Or flash it back to v6 through cwm. There's a thread here somewhere for that.

Cab flashing thru the lg tool found here - Flashing LG signed Firmware - LG Spectrum - RootzWiki

You will want to follow these directions and flash v6 or v7 like ortrigger said. I would recommend v7.

Since I have a Spec, I'll post this here, but I'll also post in the Android Applications forum. Here goes...

I use Avast Mobile Security, but I really haven't seen any evidence of virus attacks reported in the Android community. Do any of you recommend this type of app or am I just wasting phone resources by leaving it running 24/7?

Default cyanogenmod 10.1 lg spectrum possibly bricked! HELP! PLEASE

I have a LG Specrtum currently on zv7. Its rooted and last night I flashed cm 10.1. It was freakin awesome until I went into my sd card and started deleting files to free up space. The phone slowly started its decline. then it rebooted and went into a bootloop. It would show the LG startup then go to the cm 10 screen with the nice blue rotating circles, and then it would reboot and do the same thing. I tried reflashing the rom and gapps exactly like the directions said. I tried to flash my tar backup zip that I made before i flashed the rom, but It says not found. I then tried to flash a zip for my stock recovery thinking I could take it back to stock that way. now it just bootloops. if i boot it into recovery it just shows the android guy and then it goes to the cm 10 bootloop again. What have I done?!!! PLEASE HELP!!

what you just typed makes no sense to me because nothing you did should have caused what you said. I'm not sure why this happened to you but it sounds to me that you pretty much tried all the simple fixes so I think you need to flash the cab. Go here and try this Flashing LG signed Firmware - LG Spectrum - RootzWiki

When you're done with flashing the cab, you will need to run the pwnage tool again also because the cab puts you back to 100% stock.

the pwnage tool will re-root me, i'm guessing? I really appreciate the help guys. I'm at work and cant wait to try this when I get home at 4. I was sure that I was screwed when I tried to flash the stock recovery and then it started booting to stock, then it started the cm bootloop. I will post what the results are. Thanks again! You guys make it possible for me to be confident about learning how these phones work.

you'll be returned to full stock but will be able to reroot and unlock the bootloader no problem.

PHEW! I thought I erased some important file and couldnt get it back. I had a friend root it for me a while back because I didnt think I could do it. He put a rom on it for me, too. Then I got a wild hair the other night and started looking through this awesome forum and decided to try it myself. Do you know the easiest way to root once I get back to stock? I'm a little intimidated about trying it myself.

Use this link to root and unlock the bootloader [Updated 11-20-12][BOOTLOADER][Windows][VS920]Bootloader Pwnage Tool for the LG Spectrum 4G

It's pretty easy to be honest.

Basically just make sure usb debugging is enabled

the phone is set to internet/modem or ethernet mode under connectivity settings(both work but I normally use modem whatever one you use if that doesn't work try the other one, I've had to do this before)

of course you must have the proper drivers installed on your pc

then just run the tool. It does all the work.

To make sure it worked for you go to the market and grab a root checker app and grab a reboot recovery app and use the root checker app to check root and then use the reboot recovery app to boot into CWM and if all that works then you were successful. Actually all you need is this app https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.jrummy.liberty.toolboxpro&feature=n av_result#?t=W251bGwsMSwxLDMsImNvbS5qcnVtbXkubGliZ XJ0eS50b29sYm94cHJvIl0. The free version will work as well but to me this is the best root app there is. It will check root and reboot into recovery for you plus it has tons of other neat features and the dev is super responsive and helpful. And you if plan on rooting and messing with custom roms it's a must have IMO. Also this app will allow you to make backups of your apps so when you flash a new rom you can quickly reinstall all your apps without having to download them from the market.

Once you have this done download whatever rom you want (the best ones are CM10.1 and AOKP42) and flash it in recovery.

CM10.1 CyanogenMod Downloads
AOKP42 Releases | AOKP

Before flashing the Rom make a backup of your current system in CWM. And use the tar method.

To flash a rom all you do is reboot into CWM recovery wipe data/factory reset / wipe cache / wipe dalvik (dalvik is located under advanced in CWM) and then go to install zip from sdcard / choose zip from sdcard / navigate to your rom zip / and install it.

You will also need gapps which can be obtained here Goo.im Downloads - Downloading gapps-jb-20130301-signed.zip These are all the google apps and due to copyright issues none of the roms since gingerbread have them preinstalled so you must flash them separately.

After you have installed the rom in CWM now again choose zip from sdcard and navigate to gapps and flash that...and reboot, you're all done.

I just started all this and I'm wondering what firmware I have. when I got the phone, it was GB. Then I got the OTA and went to ics. do I download the 3.0.2 or the 4.0.4? and also, I cant turn my phone on to get it to debug mode. Is that an issue?

if you are trying to download the cab then just get the latest one. Which would be based off 4.0.4

As long as you can get your phone into download mode the cab should work

I'm sorry but I'm not much help at trouble shooting that tool. Neph81 is your best bet. Perhaps someone else can shed some light on things.

Maybe try reinstalling your drivers. Also you could try a different USB port

Tried it again. This time I FOLLOWED the directions. IT Worked. Thanks again!! I was reading a little about custom roms and as I understood, if I do a custom rom, it will actually root the phone for me and install CWM. Any thoughts?
Update: I have done all this 3 times now so I'm getting to be an expert. It works. But tonight I rooted my phone and it worked. then I went installed rom manager app and flashed CWM. Then right when it goes to reboot into recovery it says superuser has stopped, then it reboots. It says fastboot fastboot. long time no see with LG screen. I read about this a little. is something happening with the bootloader not unlocking properly? It has done this exact thing to me 2 night in a row. VERY frustrating!! Anyone have any thoughts? Greatly appreciated! I cant have this thing stock, not cool
