Default Thrive's "hidden" FM tuner

Although many websites list this phone as having FM, the LG website and AT&T's website do not, for some reason. FM capability is not addressed in the 97-page User Manual, and the one reference on the AT&T website (a tutorial for the Thrive) specifically says "The LG Thrive (P506) does not have an FM radio. AT&T Radio is available. This tutorial will cover the operation of AT&T Radio." So, I was confused. Of course, I found that one of the choices in the pre-loaded AT&T Radio app IS an FM tuner. At first I thought this was streaming from AT&T, but it works even in "airplane mode" when neither wifi nor cell service is available, and there is no lag at all compared to my local radio station. And no data was being expended from my data plan. So apparently there really is an actual tuner inside the phone. I would think they would want to emphasize this feature more.

Cool FM Radio tuning without an app on the P506 LG Thrive

If you want to skip the AT&T Radio registration (I use only WiFi for data) then you can use the maintenance menu by dialing 3845#*506# in the phone screen.

Insert your headphones and scroll down to FM Radio Test in the menu. You can manually enter the station frequency in multiples of 10^4 Hz; this means that 88.5 Mhz becomes 8850, and 103.3 (WPRB Princeton, best college station on the east coast) becomes 10330.

The "Done" button on the keyboard does nothing useful here. Just enter the frequency and hit the "Freq" button to tune.

The LG Thrive is AT&T's first ever prepaid smartphone and it also happens to be an Android Phone. AT&T calls this service option GoPhone and it requires absolutely no long-term contract- a great option for budget conscious shoppers who ... Read More
