That's not how it works. You have to request it from Google.

Currently you cannot use your own number, GV will issue you a number. You will be able to add your current number in your GV account and have it ring when your GV number is dialed.

You'll get an invite in 3-7 days.

I am new to the forums. Found them by searching invites for Gvoice.

If anyone else has an extra invite I would love it. Ive been waiting for Google to invite me for 2 weeks now. Ive heard turn around it 1 to 1.5 weeks. But no luck for me or my buddy who signed up at the same time.
