I'm sure there's an explanation for that but time traveling person isn't one of them. You can't travel back in time. You can travel into the future though.
If it is a phone, then who or how would she be talking to someone? There wouldn't be cell towers in 1928. If it is a hearing aid, then why would she be talking and what would there be for her to listen to? Also, if it is a hearing aid, what does she need to hear in a silent movie?
My theory is it is indeed one of those hearing aids...and she's just crazy & talking to herself.
It kinda reminds me of when I was little. Way before mobile phones were introduced, I used to take my Walkman (R.I.P.) & hold it to my ear like I was using a phone. I used to pretend to talk to people. Maybe *I* was a bit crazy!

seeing stuff like this often makes me wonder: what am I doing today, that is going to be the subject of curiousity/exploration/amusement to someone 200 years in the future.

The device she was using could well have been one of these. Siemens Hearing Instruments - Our History 'Siemens patent for a compact, pocket sized carbon microphone/amplifier device suitable for pocket instruments.' ...patented in 1924. ...looks familiar.
As for who she was talking to. I would say either the guy walking in front of her or the zebra with the saddle.
If it was a time travelled mobile phone, she would definitely be talking to herself, there been no mobile networks in 1928.

i am not saying that I believe it is a time traveler..
but if it was.. and she had a device that could transport her to the past...
you guys dont think they could have a device that could communicate with others.. without a cell tower? Could be talking to her partner.. that is on the other side of they city.. like a really strong walkie talkie? or a cell that can reach back to her headquarters, where there is a device that can send info back to her own time?
it could also be a recording device, that she is using to make logs of what she observed.
as for bluetooth device...yeah.. in 1928 would you be walking around in public with that in your ear??? people look funny now.. walking and talk in bluetooth; or with just the device hanging there doing nothing.

yep - seems like this is the answer... but of course, notice how after this response was given, people ignored it opting for the extra-terrestrial, or time travel options. As someone said before, if you have the technology to travel back in time, you would also have the technology to talk to people back where you came from.
So some say that Chaplin did this joke on purpose. I don't doubt for a second that Chaplin would pull this sort of gag (anyone seen Modern Times?). But I don't think a random lady walking in the background holding a box to her head and talking to herself is the best way to trick a future audience into thinking they see time travelers. (this is assuming Chaplin knowingly did this as a gag). I think he would do something a little more impressive or obvious than that. Now if it was some random lady from the future walking on to a set that was likely guarded by security (given Chaplin's fame, I would assume there was security of some sort), I think that is just as unlikely.

I agree! But seeing how many posted in this thread and seeing how there were at least two threads started about it, I guess they're reporting what people want to hear. Maybe everyone was as sick of the political ads as I was. LOL
