Thumbs up Verizon Tech here - ask away!

Hey everyone. I just registered for this site. Seems like a great place to be. I do Tech Support for Verizon in-store and know all of the phones pretty well. I am here to answer any questions you might have (let's try to keep it related to the Droid) that you might not have the answer to. Please keep in mind, I'm not a developer and I'm not going to be able to tell you that why such and such app isn't working on your phone. I'm here to answer questions related to Verizon and how the Droid works with Verizon's network and any tech related questions related to the Droid.

Feel free to ask whatever questions you have, and mods, if there is a better place for this thread, please feel free to move it Thanks guys. I look forward to helping you.

Green haze in the middle of the camera... I'm not sure that its been there the whole time... I find its most notable when taking pictures of white things... There are several others that have posted sample images of it here. Is this common amongst other devices you've worked w/?

Hmm... not a complaint I have seen in the store or on any of the phones I have used, including mine. Did you update to 2.0.1 yet? Probably won't help, but try wiping off the lens with a cloth.

Yep updated to 2.0.1 and I've wiped with a cloth... Was funny I tried to take a pic the other day and there was a bunch of lens effect type of junk in the picture... Not really lens effect but I can't think of the correct term... Many lines from light areas... Kinda like what you see when you first wake up. Anyway it turned out that wiping the lens off corrects that but the green haze is always there...

I'm still going to hold out for someone figuring something out and issuing a software fix but I've called VZW and logged that I'm having the issue. They offered to send me another phone being that its under warranty. I figure that I'll hold off on that to give them time to figure out their issues.

There is a lot of random pattern noise on their imager. Something tells me that they should have spent a little more time in power distribution and supply design to help clean some of that up but it is what it is...

I've got one further question... If I get a replacement now I'm sure that I'll get a refurbed unit... If I wait 6 or 8 months to give things time and then order a replacement based on this issue I'm sure it will be a refurb as well... However will the refurb stock be fairly refreshed (and of newer units) or does it stay fairly stagnant and a long way back.... Not sure if you have that much visibility into the supply chain management of the warranty dept but I figured I'd ask....

Well, I personally would have the device exchanged. As far as the refurb question, you would get a BRAND NEW phone if you exchange it within the 30 day WFG (Worry Free Guarantee). Any time after that it is very likely to be a refurb. They are sent to us through the manufacturer, Motorola in this case. I don't quite get what you mean when you ask if the refurbs will be "fairly refreshed", however. Do you mean if there is a hardware or software change, with the refurbs have it? The answer to that question is yes. When new hardware comes out, we get those phone and when new software comes out, we flash current stock and shortly there after, new stock comes in with the new firmware.

Refreshed as in flushed through... as in is the refurb stock brought in every 6 months or more and then doled out as they are needed or are a smaller number kept on hand that are a fairly representative sample of that which is coming off of the current manufacturing line.

I'm already out of my 30 days so I knew that anything I got was going to be a refurb no matter when I exchange things... I figured I'd be fair and try the first software update to see if that fixed things but I think it was quite intentional that the update was a week after release day purchasers were out of their 30 days.

Does VZW officially acknowledge that the browser has slowed on some sites after the 2.0.1 update?

I have logged an issue on the google code site:
Issue 5286 - android - Browser lags when scrolling after 2.0.1 Update on Motorola DROID - Project Hosting on Google Code

And there have been a lot of people starring the issue for it to have moved to the first page of issues in a 48 hour period.

CLNRs (the correct term for the refurbs - Certified Like New Replacements) are continuously sent to the stores based on demand. So we get X amount at a time and as we run low, we are replenished.

I don't believe the update was done intentionally after the 30 days, to be honest. They just needed some time to make the needed enhancements to the device and test it before they released it.

I have read that people are having this problem. I have noticed it on my phone as well. Verizon has not officially said anything in regards to that. I will send the issue up so that they are aware this is happening (if they aren't already).

Greatly appreciated. If you could please reference this issue link in your notifications. There is some good information there that may assist with fixing the issue. I'd really like to see this one go away soon. Many of my friends gave the phone very high marks based on how well scrolling worked in the browser. Also if one goes and looks at reviews where people compare the iPhone and the Droid they compare browser scroll speed and if the phones ever show blank screens while updating. If the Droid came out with 2.0.1 it would have caught some HEAVY criticism for this problem.

Any official news on when the exchange updates are scheduled to drop? Can you confirm the January rumors?

There was an exchange update of sorts in the 2.0.1 update. Where you referring to anything in particular? And as for a January update, keep your eyes open I cannot confirm or deny... blah blah blah you know how it goes, unfortunately.

I'd really like to see the ability to search my exchange email history beyond that which I sync with my device like I can in the gmail interface...

I'd also REALLY REALLY REALLLY love to have GAL access! I'd be willing to pay for an update that allowed the device to support GAL access directly in the email application.

Unfortunately, I haven't heard of anything specific like that being fixed in any future updates sorry, but hopefully they will further improve corporate sync.

A leaked VZW document mentioned the search functionality coming... but nothing about the GAL support. Touchdown supports the GAL but its interface isn't as good as the default email app. Not saying the email app is perfect....but...

The thing I don't like about Touchdown is that it won't syn your corporate calendar into your device calendar or your GMail calendar (that would than sync back to your device anyway). I asked them and they said that they aren't planning to fix that anytime soon, which is unfortunate. It's a great app otherwise, IMO.

Actually it does sync your calendar quite well. Unless your saying it doesn't sync into the corporate calendar application which is true. You have to use the interface inside of Touchdown to view and create calendar events. Its very well done but the UI isn't my favorite.

I'm saying that I can't take the calendar info in Touchdown and shove it into the Calendar app on the Droid or into a GMail calendar. The 2 calendars are separate.

Yes... Technically the 3 calendars are separate... Touchdown has its own, then the two stock calendars... However there is a free calendar syncing tool that google writes for windows and outlook to dump outlook's data to a gmail calendar.

Default Apps

Do you feel that many problems start occurring because of the number of Apps installed on the DROID, eventually do Apps start interfering with each other, and/or not compatible which each other, causing problems with the OS of the DROID.

Did the update fix any of the email issues such as the inability to save attached documents? I've been using K-9 Mail so I can save attachments. That issue is the only reason I quit using the stock email program. I'd switch back if the problem got fixed.

Viperboy, So glad you are on the forum. I just got a replacement (BRAND NEW) droid right before my 30 days cuz my original had a very loose screen. Anyway now my new one is great except for a problem I discuss in another thread. Link is posted so as not to clutter up this forum. Will you hit me back with your thoughts? Is this a common issue? Should I live with it? Thanks in advance bro!

Replacement droid microphone problem?

Hey Viperboy,

I have a contract question. I currently have a family plan and would like to add my mom to my plan, she currently is in a VZW contract, she is elig for her NE2, but her contract is not up till April. Can I switch her account to mine without an ETF?

Thanks,

Welcome to the forum. Would you be able to shed any insight into this issue (link below):

Did the update fix your 3G->1x swtiching and reception issues?

...basically, the Droid seems to suffer from constant signal status change. Understandably its different for everyone based on location however some people drop signal in fairly decent reception areas, or just have weaker signal, than other phones on VZ in the same area.

More importantly, would this be something that software or configuration changes could fix, or is it strictly hardware?

How do we know you're really a Verizon "tech"? How can you prove it?

Who cares? I do. Or I wouldn't have taken the time to ask the question.

If I'm going to trust his information and knowledge, I'd like some kind of proof that he knows what he's talking about. Anybody that's a good BS'er and with a source to the internet can "claim" to be something they're not.

Furthermore...before you know it the real experts will emerge on this forum the way they did at crackberry's forums. They will be the ones with the post counts in the 1000's and they will gain a reputation as droid genius' lol.

Oh and if you wanna talk to a Verizon tech just call CS haha

I doubt Viperboy will be too ofended by this.. Someone who has the name "droid420" obviously loses a lot of credibility... Hard to be taken seriously when you have a pot smoking reference in your name...

However, I'm sure having 420 in your name makes you cool though, right?

You go boy, to cool for me!

Viper Boy -

Can you shed some light on the issue of Droid not playing nice with Yahoo POP accounts? Immediately after I finally got my account synched on the device, I started getting "ghost" notifications (i.e., notifications of new emails but no new emails actually received), while previously read emails appeared as unread. It seems like Verizon really wants folks to convert to Gmail, and I'd rather not. This is happening even after the 2.0.1 update. Any info/workaround would be greatly appreciated.

Can someone help me figure out how to set up WiFi on my Droid? I have it turned off at the moment but when it was on, I would get notifications of WiFi access (Linksys). Someone mentioned that Verizon blocks some features but I don't see how that's true. I get a notification for "Emily1" but access is locked. My 3G coverage is great. I'm just wondering if WiFi isn't available in my house.

It seems like Verizon really wants folks to convert to Gmail, and I'd rather not. This is happening even after the 2.0.1 update. Any info/workaround would be greatly appreciated.

There are several threads about how to get Yahoo working on the Droid, both here on this forum, and the internet. Its a known issue, but I believe that a workaround has been discovered.

Anyway, can someone help me figure out how to set up WiFi on my Droid? I have it turned off at the moment but when it was on, I would get notifications of WiFi access (Linksys). Someone mentioned that Verizon blocks some features but I don't see how that's true. I get a notification for "Emily1" but access is locked. My 3G coverage is great. I'm just wondering if WiFi isn't available in my house.

Wifi works with any router that is "open" to the public, or "your own personal WiFi router", Verizon has not disabled Wifi. Are you saying that not sure if you have a router in your house? Is "Emily1" your SSID name or a neighbor's?

No, I don't have an SSID name. I didn't buy a router. I enabled wifi earlier. I'm connected to Lynksys but the signal is poor. I was prompted to enter a network.

I'm not sure I understand your issue. Are you asking the following questions:

1. Did Verizon do something to limit WiFi access?
2. How to connect to available WiFi network "in general"?
3. How to connect to a "specific" WiFi network?

Your saying you're connected to "Linksys" but the signal is poor. Do you know who's network that is, and do you know if you are even allowed on it?

1. I really don't believe Verizon did anything.

2. Yes.

3. Yes.

Yes, no, and no.

The Verizon Rep didn't explain any of this when I asked more than once.

Where is this "workaround" you speak of? I have been looking everywhere for some type of update.

And please do not point me to the....manual email setup with the imap.mail.yahoo.com config, cause that does not work. Or at least I have not been able to get it to work.

"WiFi" access is usually limited to a personal router for the home, or at a business. Its not a term to used access for a large geographical area. If you're at home, and "seeing" a network name (Emily1), then its a personal router at one of your neighbors. If you are connecting to it, and they don't know about it, you shouldn't, as it most likely wasn't meant for you.

In order to access a WiFi network, again either a wireless router in your home connected to some internet provider, or at a hot spot at some business (e.g. a local coffee shop, or hotel), you usually need (3) pieces of information.

1. SSID - name of the network
2. Type of security used - WEP, WPA, WPA2 (if security is enabled)
3. Security Key - password or passphrase (again if security is enabled)

Even if you have all (3) pieces of info, if the router is using MAC address filtering, you need to be on the router's "list" in order to connect.

Hope that helped.

Yes, that helped. I appreciate it very much. My son was here a few times with his Mac laptop and he was able to access WiFi. I asked him not to use it if he had to "piggyback" on someone else's network. I'm not the type to take what isn't mine and the "Emily1" definitely made me think it was a neighbor's network. I was confused about the Linksys but you explained it well.

Sorry if I misunderstood your problem. I don't have yahoo mail, and I no longer have a droid, but did read about people able to access their accounts. "Searching this forum" retured (3) pages of threads on yahoo mail.

If you simply can't send/receive yahoo mail, with the native POP3 Email app, you can either use the GMail app to import, via the settings in gmail online.

If you're having stability issues with yahoo mail, you may want to look at 3rd party app for POP3 mail called K-9 Mail.

If neither of those are your issue, then I appologize for misunderstanding and wish you luck...Droid is a nice device.

Ok, here's the deal with WiFi...

If you live in a city that has "City Wide WiFi" you can get WiFi anywhere... you can also pick up a signal in airports, coffee shops and other "WiFi Hotspots"... using WiFi in your house, when you don't own a Wireless Router yourself, is kinda illegal. Connecting to "Emily1" will just cause Emily to get pissed off, and likely get you messed with if she has any tech savvy... naming her wireless network "Emily1" would suggest otherwise, though she did have the piece of mind to set a WEP or WPA passcode on the router, which is more than most people know how to do.

As for accessing "Linksys"... just because it's an open network and didn't require a password does not make it any more legal for you to leech off their internet access unless they tout their router as a "WiFi Hotspot". If you have any more questions - how to set up wifi in your house, how to set up widgets and such on your phone, feel free to start a new thread, and ask away.

FYI,
There are very, very many accomplished "pot smokers" some of them even came up w/ unique operating systems that are somewhat good, but of course 2nd to the Android OS lol. Some of them own entire corporations as well. A few of the men that signed our Declaration of Independence also indulged, as well as grew it. Alas, ignorance is bliss....
In fact, nearly half of the U.S. population has smoked pot at least once...
just thought I would throw that out there, for anyone that felt like trying to marginalize nearly half of the entire U.S. population, anyway...

Welcome to the forums mang, glad to see another VZW team member, you are a CSR then? My store has just Sales reps, and CSRs. But I am in a conversion market, so I don't know if we are operating 100% the VZW way yet or not. In any event, glad I stumbled onto your thread.

I have a question, I had a cust come into the store today, and like me, they got the notification but did not do it right away..
The difference is, he is not capable of doing it manually, I actually called data tech, my thinking was that they may be able to push it out to him again, so that he could do it, but they acted like I was asking them to make it rain jelly beans or something? Know anything off the top of your head that may help here? It's the Eris, and he is having some minor issues, that I am sure the update will alleviate, but he doesn't really understand this and is likely on the verge of doing a DOA, which will get him another Eris, that will also need an update, that has already been pushed to him. You see where I am going w/ this, anyway, his only hope at this point, is to "hope" that it gets pushed to him again, but I dunno?
What do you think?

Thank you. This was explained to me above and I replied. I appreciate your offer to help me with other issues.

Default How to get rid of frequently called numbers

Under favorites there is a list called, "Frequently called numbers". Which shows the last phone numbers you called.
My question is: How do I erase them?

Thanks

My phone lists a call log. If that's what you mean, pull up the list and click menu. You can clear call log there.

I would like to know where the heck is the bluetooth headset voice dialing?? any plans on it ever making it to the phone. Another question, how come one can't download an attachment to an email, or at least a word doc. you can view it but not save. How come animated mms messages don't play on the phone? is there a way to get sounds sent in an mms to play with the pic showing? I do like the phone but I would have to say that the advertisement is not very accurate. I can do all of these things on my blackberry and not on the droid. except for the faster browser. I really hope this is alot of major improvements coming for this phone. One last question, whats up with getting yahoo emails on the phone???

Thanks for your time and effort to helping all of us with these questions.

OK guys, a few things.

1.) I will respond to this thread often, but it might not be right away. Searching might be a better option. Not saying I don't want to answer your questions, but my answers most of the time won't be immediate.
2.) I would have no reason to make up that I am a Tech. I don't know how I could even prove it because the ways I could prove it, you wouldn't understand because you don't work for the company. If you believe me, great. If not, nothing I can do. Sorry, I don't feel I need to prove it, nor do I need to risk my job throwing info out there trying to prove it.
3.) Can we please try to keep this thread clean? I understand the WiFi thing might not have been clear, but where the conversation lead to could have been better served in a new thread.

On to answering questions...

It's possible that some apps will interfere with others, but if you are smart about it, it doesn't matter. The problem I see is that someone will download 3 SMS apps and they wonder why they are having problems Try not to download apps that do the same things. That can absolutely cause issues.

I don't believe that was a fix. What you can do is download Download Crutch and log into GMail from the Browser and download files from there. Seems to work great for me!

Replacement droid microphone problem?
As far as that goes, it could just need replacing. The only thing I can think of is are you maybe hitting the mute button with your cheek?? I move the phone around when I talk and sometimes the screen comes on and I accidentally end up hanging up, pressing numbers, or hitting the mute button. I wish that the proximity sensor would just completely lock the screen so they when you do move the phone away from your face, you have to do the unlock slide to do anything. Just my opinion.

Yes, you can do an AOL (Assumption of Liability). You have to assume responsibility of the line and she continues her current contract.

...basically, the Droid seems to suffer from constant signal status change. Understandably its different for everyone based on location however some people drop signal in fairly decent reception areas, or just have weaker signal, than other phones on VZ in the same area.

More importantly, would this be something that software or configuration changes could fix, or is it strictly hardware?
I don't believe this was directly addressed in the update. I never had a problem with my phone doing this either. Seems like it is a software problem. Unfortunately, I don't have more info on this.

If I'm going to trust his information and knowledge, I'd like some kind of proof that he knows what he's talking about. Anybody that's a good BS'er and with a source to the internet can "claim" to be something they're not.

I am not sure why exactly, but regular Yahoo! accounts aren't just a quick setup anymore. I believe Yahoo! changed settings (possibly intentionally - you know... the whole Yahoo! and Google relationship and Yahoo! might not want to play nice?) so while there may be a work around, officially, I have to tell you that if you want your Yahoo! to work, upgrade to a Plus account or forward your Yahoo! email to your GMail account.

No, I am not a CSR, I am an actual Tech. Some markets have them, some don't.

As far as that update, Tech cannot poke the phone to make it update again. They should just get the poke again shortly. If not, in my region anyway, we can flash the phones in the store if something goes wrong with the update, but only as out final option! It is very likely to erase everything in their phone.

I really hope this is alot of major improvements coming for this phone. One last question, whats up with getting yahoo emails on the phone???

Thanks for your time and effort to helping all of us with these questions.
As far as voice dialing, I really don't have an answer for you on that about BT voice dialing enhancements.

For MMS messages, press and hold on the message and try to Save and play it back on your phone. That should work.

All of your other questions, I have answered earlier in this post.

I had to edit your post because a more accurate statement couldn't be stressed enough. Especially when most issues have been discussed at length, both here, and on the internet, and when a particular problem me be better addressed towards Google, Motorola, or the 3rd party vendor that developed the app in question.

Again, new threads may not be needed...I'd like to take this time to stress the point above.

I'd also like to take this time to thank viperboy for helpin' out in general, and looking into the 3G->1x switching issue specifically. FWIW, it is a problem for a significant number of people, but again, doubt that its widespread. While you say its a software issue, which I hope it would be, I made a thread regarding a "homemade antenna", which made marked improvements:

Homemade antenna breakthrough on 3G/1x switching?
