Wish I'd tried the variant.
I used to live in Hickory, NC, and while I didn't partake in any bbq eating, that is the case. Eastern Carolina has more of a traditional bbq sauce while western is vinegar based.

I've bought so many things from Living Social and Groupon! The apps both work fine on Nessie (yes, I DID NAME MY STOOPID PHONE!) My wife and I courted quite a bit by using the various purchases via those companies. We enjoy looking at the various coupons we have on Nessie, and deciding where to go. One thing we love about them is how it introduces us to different places that we may not try otherwise. We've never had a bad experience with them, and believe me, we've used them a lot. Tonight we're going to a nice Italian restaurant for dinner, via Groupon. You just have to be smart about what you buy. I always check them online before buying, if I'm not familiar with the place.

I too hope everyone has a nice Valentine's Day!

Love Vandy's. Only had Boyd's a couple times, and I usually go to Vandy's when we do BBQ. I wish we went there more, my wife isn't as big a fan as me. It's weird, I was born in MN, grew up in FL, she was born and raised in the Boro and Savannah, and I like southern food way more than her.

I grew up in Texas, moved here to NC in '97. LOVE the Texas style BBQ, not so much the NC style. Early's right...it's hard to find another style here...it's pretty much all vinegar based. Texas style is tomato based sauce, and is usually brisket or ribs. I REALLY miss Texas BBQ though! If anyone has ever tried it, Underwood's BBQ in Brownwood, Texas is to DIE for! We would drive literally 90 miles to get it on a Sunday after church. Gotta take the new wife to Texas for some REAL BBQ!

Dang, all this talk about grilling is making me wanna stay home and grill tonight...lol.

You guys are killing me with this BBQ talk. I am supposed to be on a diet. I have to say I am a fan of a dry pulled pork myself. I do the crockpot pulled pork with pork loin, with salt, pepper, garlic powder, and some BBQ sauce to cook it in, then take it out and pull it, adding just enough of the juices in the crockpot to moisten it. Its not smoked, but still tasty...

Actually, eastern NC (that's where I am currently) is known for it's vinegar-based chopped BBQ. That's what's prevalent around this area. Most places only have eastern NC-style chopped BBQ (Wilbur's in Goldsboro, Bill's and Parker's in Wilson, and Gardner's BBQ in Rocky Mount) that's mostly vinegar-based. You have to ask for pulled pork BBQ around here, unless you go to a BBQ-specialty place like The Pit in Raleigh. I'm a NJ transplant and I love, love, love the chopped/vinegar-based BBQ.

Jeez, my mouth is watering now!

If anyone is interested, we make pork confit for pizza at the restaurant. Very simple: layer 1in slices of pork shoulder with some bruised garlic cloves, thyme, peppercorns, and juniper berries. Surround all of it with a ton of very course salt and let cure in the fridge for 4 hours. Rinse off the cure and cover with a desired fat. We use duck fat but lard is fine. Cover and bake at 300 for 4 hours. Once slightly cooled pull from fat and shred. I'm a vegetarian and still LOVE this style of production!

Do you go to the Vandy's at the mall (well it was a mall 15-20 years ago)? My favorite was the one down town, a little shack hole in the wall, 2 elderly hefty black women cookin' it up....mhmm delish!

(this was many eons ago so it might have changed)

Whelp, picked up the sea bass, and damn is fish expensive! I called the lady a little earlier and asked if she liked sea bass. I was met with some hilarious laughter in the WTF style! She knows our oven is out but I said I could get it all cooked in the pan. Looks like I'll have to finish it in the toaster oven, no problem. Should be a nice dinner.

Anyway, I upgraded this morning to AOKP 23 whole wipe and all. Found it, for some reason, to be extremely sluggish... I had the browser crap out on me a couple times so I ended up nandroid-ing back to 21. Seems to work best for my phone. Still looking for some better ways to get superb battery life. I left the house at 12pm, logged in 20min on the web, then another 2 hours at the restaurant (chatting with you guys no less). Went from 100% to 28% in that time. Understand web browsing and screen on time are huge killers, but that's a bit rough IMO.

Mall still there, in fact they just expanded the Belk to double the original size... And I have always gone to the mall one... But I guess I should have known they were different experiences, the three el sombreros in town are the same way... all different, everyone has their own favorite one.

I loaded Liquid Beta 4 on sunday and I haven't had any issues. Many of the same options as AOKP but it feels a little more stock. It comes with Leankernel 1.10 and I am noticing probably 30% better battery life with the same usage. My scientific method of 30% better, I had to plug in after about 10 hrs before, now I make it 13 hrs, see 30% better

Thanks for the tip, Pupkact!
Anyone need some nice "romantic" and fun music to get in the lovin spirit, here's a song from one of my favorite bands: Truckstop Honeymoon. Husband and wife duo came up from LA to KS during Katrina and got married in a truckstop, hence the name! They played at a good friends wedding. Man, were they a ton of fan to dance to...

Alright, I'm all music'd up this afternoon. Another lovey dovey song from a favorite out of Austin: The Asylum Street Spankers. Bunch of washed up punk rockers who decided to form this all acoustic anything goes band. Love her voice:

Edit: Totally forgot this is kind of a sad love song. My bad. Least I covered two parts of V-Day.

Haha, they're a hugely fun band, wish I was able to see them live. Watching some other vids of them on YouTube. "It's a Sin to Tell a Lie" is one of my favorites. They have this sophomoric humor to them at times but since they're all parents they put out a childrens album! (even covered Nirvana's Sliver)

I think my work uses a Chinese government filtering / censorship system. I had to pull up this thread on my phone to see what BBs surprise was. I can only see her comment and a bunch of thanks on my work PC. That's also why I never do screenies as all "personal storage" is blocked.

Alright, since it's just the 3 of us in here and you seem to be digging my music style, here's the last. Split Lip Rayfield from Kansas. Where punk meets bluegrass. Unfortunately, when I was in Lawrence they lost their guitar player to cancer. They're so talented and I love the sound. The base player plays a home built base out of a truck gas tank and uses weed wacker line for strings. Love em! Song is about him killing all of his past cars.

So jealous! I saw them once in Lawrence as their briefly reincarnated band after the guitarist passed. Just amazing.

Don't want to clog it up anymore so I'll just link. This is them as the original band and great quality. Looked it up and they're playing in western MD this summer. It's pretty far from DC so don't know if we'll be able to make it.

Another studio clip:

Lived there for a couple years working at Wheatfields Bakery. Was my first job out of culinary school. I LOVE Lawrence. If only the lady could have found a job there, I wouldn't have left. Was a nice small, liberal college town where I met some great down home people.

Lawrence is nice. And it's right outside of KC if you want to go into the city. I'm down in Wichita myself.

Honestly, the only time I left Lawrence was to go to the KC airport! Only time I've been in western Kansas was when we drove back from CA to IN. Went through Topeka but that's it.

Dang, all this talk about grilling is making me wanna stay home and grill tonight...lol.
I too grew up in Texas and miss good ole Texas Barbecue. Dry rub is the way to go. Haha, just ordered a Rudy's brisket for New Years, but nothing beats Lockart Texas for great barbecue. As to NC, I agree with previous poster, two kinds of BBQ here, vinegar base in the west and tomato based in the east. Red or white slaw on your pulled pork sandwich?

For Texas BBQ I'm a huge fan of the Salt Lick outside of Austin. That place rocks!

Saw film from that place on both Man vs. Food and Top Chef (two of my absolute favorite shows). Looks amazing and too legit.

Edit: And, wow rookie mistake at the store. I grabbed cilantro instead of parsley for dinner. Ugh, you'd think I'd be able to tell the difference! Should be fine either way though I don't know if it'll pair well with tarragon.

I'm just getting into slaw as I have been so turned off for my entire life by the gross restaurant slaw served here. I've had a few awesome homemade ones that are delicious so I now want to pair a good one with my pulled pork. If anyone wants to help spread good slaw to a Northeastern dude, please PM me or post a recipe here.

Yep, and while I don't eat any true bbq, I loves me some well made slaw.
Two biggest problems: either too much sugar or too much mayo. For me, the easiest way is: equal parts red and green cabbage, .5 parts carrots all finely grated/julienned. Mix in some dijon mustard (not too traditional), small amount of mayo, a white vinegar (white wine, white balsamic, apple cider are all fine). Season with salt and pepper, BAM, done! There's plenty of other stuff you can add into it, but I like it nice and traditional. Celery salt is nice, some Tabasco, sour cream, red onion, herbs; the skies the limit.

Alright, I promise this will be the last song post (have most of my dinner prep done, waiting for the wife to come home to finish). Andrew Bird is one of our absolute favorites. We've seen him 3 times now and are just wow'd each time. One of the most talented artists out there today. Classically trained violin player, insane whistler, guitar player and overall great composer.

Thanks everyone - as usual.
Been down with the flu the past few days, so since it seems this place is hopping again, wanted to drop this back in and see if there were any other options. Thanks BB, for your suggestion.

As for BBQ and cooking. I also cooking most of the time, when we are eating at home. I love BBQ, and in particular smoking.

As others have stated, smoking is so laid back and easy - the hardest part is probably prepping the meat. Once you get used to how your smoker reacts when increasing/decreasing oxygen, you rarely have to do much.

I would highly suggest people who love to smoke, try building your own smoker. I built my smoker out of a 50 gallon drum for less than $60 in hardware. Best thing I have probably ever done - for food gadgets. When I brought the drum home, my wife said "why did you buy a big steel trash can"

You can usually get the drums for free, or very little ($25ish) from an apple orchard, if you have any near you. Getting food grade drums are the best, because they don't have a liner inside that you'd need to burn out. If you can't get food grade drums, you can get a drum from anywhere, just make sure you burn it out, with lots of wood/pallets and then grind out any left over liner. After that easy peezy. $50 - $75 worth of hardwaare later, half hour to 1 hour of time, and you have a smoker ready to go.

I got lucky, and got mine powder coated for free as well.

Have I mentioned, I LOVE BBQ?

Rudy's!

I am a New Mexican but when it comes to bbq I do not mess with the Lone Star State. In fact, I am going to play Lyle Lovett's That's Right, You're Not From Texas right now!

And slaw with my pork? Red, the only way to go imo.

What BBQ means, by location:
SC - pulled pork, mustard based sauce
NC - pulled pork, vinegar based sauce
TN - pork ribs, dry rub
Rest of the south - pulled pork, tomato based sauce
Midwest - ribs, sweet sauce
Texas - brisket/beef ribs
Northeast - a cookout in the backyard
Everywhere else - pork or beef ribs, tomato based sauce

you'll never convince me that anything is better than SC style, but i wouldn't try to change anyone else's mind either. arguing bbq style is like arguing religion.
If I might add from Cali....BBQ means TriTrip, santa maria style seasonings (like SuzieQs or a home made mix with garlic, onion, seasoned salt and more garlic) or a bacon wrapped filet mignon, with santa maria style seasonings or burgers..all on a red oak fire pit/BBQ in the back yard with lots of friends and family.
At least that's what it means to us....
