Already reports of houses leveled. Local high school took an indirect hit but all students safe.

Tell me about it, Geek! We've had one tornado warning already this morning... and things haven't even picked up yet!

I had to cancel a meeting tonight due to inclement weather. Got my shopping done early. This is looking to be a rock-n-roll kinda evening - moved the weather radio into the dining room and tuned in! Everyone STAY SAFE tonight!

soo it's been a long time since ive been back here... grad school + work is killer. anywho i've been really interested in a tablet and all the new stuff outta MWC really got me excited.

anyone have thoughts on taking the plunge for something out now and getting a good deal vs waiting for something to come stateside at a decent price and latest tech?

price is really want i'm after (<$400), to view photos, and to read PDFs and watch lectures while on travel. i was really a big fan of the gtab 7+ and the playbook really got my attention once you could load android apps. the acer a500 and xoom have both been in my shopping cart at one point, until i resisted the impulse.

I dont particularly like it when it reads my texts to me while I am on a call. I dont even remember if reading the texts is by default or if I made it happen some way. It would seem to me that the text speech should mute while on a call, but it doesnt.

So, what did I do to turn this on? How do I turn it off? Best would be if it muted while I am on a call.

Any advice would be appreciated.

So everyone, I'm sitting here watching this crazy messed up movie "Antonia's Line" for a World Film class. It's so messed up. So far it has been "Rape scene, sex scene, marriage scene, 4 different couples sex scene, another rape scene, then I watched the soldier who did the raping be beat, and finallly he was drowned." It's...such a weird movie. I don't have any idea what I am going to post about in the discussion board. I feel bad after watching said movie. I hope you all are having a beter day than me!

Edit: and now there is a lesbian sex scene. What the heck. All in the line of "education" I guess.

afternoon, all!

Just learned a new canon 5DmkIII was announced last night, mostly with tweaks for video but a few for still shots, but a 1k premium over the currant 5DmkII? Looks like Canon just cut me out of this camera. Not that my mkII is doing bad. Also find the trend of product refreshes like new lenses, say the 24-70mm f/2.8L II 2300 bucks from the (still available) mkI which is on sale for 1300. A thousand dollar price increase? Seriously!?

This trend is disturbing.

Oh, and those of you in the tornado outbreaks today, stay safe and heed the warnings! Get a NOAA radio if you need to, or even weather channel app or SOMETHING! Keep your eyes on the sky and be sure to warn every one who may be in or around the paths and warning / watch areas.

And THAT'S what passes for "higher education" anymore. Thank GOD my kids have decided not to go to college...

EDIT: I'm not saying that ALL academic institutions are like this... but there's quite enough of them to be absolutely scary!

Yeah, I realize this is only a level 115 course, so it makes sense to me, it's about cultural diversity, it's still an eye opener how much...darkness is in this movie. Sidenote: A guy totally just died by having a cow kick him

BTW nice little accomplishment for my app. I need to find a way to get more downloads and usage. I want to incorporate activity points (points you gain for doing a workout / other activities) and a daily points allowance calculator. Any other ideas anyone has?

Well, that's apparently one consequence of global warming... While we are still getting tornadoes here, the nasty ones seem to have moved to the Southeast United States lately. I have family around Oak Ridge, TN and friends in Tuscaloosa.

Thanks for the update. Sorry you're still having problems. I wouldn't exchange for another refurb unless you absolutely had to... as you've seen, I haven't had the best luck with refurbs.

On to the next chapter of my Nexus story. I had the one-way audio issue when talking with my mom yesterday afternoon. I asked her if any of her friends complain about that, as it always seems to happen with her. She said no (of course). I called Verizon and went through the spiel for what seemed like the 1000th time. The rep said she can see the notes on my account but nowhere did it state they will give me a new Nexus to exchange (of course). She asked if I wanted a RAZR, and I politely declined. I said I love the Nexus, it's perfect except for this, etc., etc.

She checked her "internal discussion forums" and found several other references to people complaining about this. She then said, "Oh, it states here this is a known issue per Samsung and it will be fixed in a future software release, scheduled for early March." Again with the polite expression of Whiskey Tango Foxtrot! She said, let's get Samsung on the phone and see what they have to say.

She brought Samsung on the line and the 1st level rep at Samsung said there "are no defects with the Galaxy Nexus and any issues are with the carrier." Both the Verizon rep and I rolled our eyes and she (Verizon rep) said no, it's not a carrier issue, you said it was a problem, when is it going to be fixed? They went back and forth a few times and finally the Verizon rep asked for the Samsung rep's supervisor. He came on the line and was, in a word, worthless. He basically regurgitated what sounded like internal poilicies and canned answers. When asked, but what about the customer? he said they don't have phones to do an exchange, they don't sell directly to consumers, etc. Basically every answer to absolve them of responsibility. He also said that anything found on dicsussion forums is "heresay" and "not accurate". I piped up at this point and said that we, the Android community, aren't making this stuff up. It made no difference.

We hung up with him and the Verizon rep was digging a little more and found that yes, this one-way audio issue is a known issue, and it's going to be fixed in the latest release. I said, how come no one else I talked to the other 4 times I've called told me that? She said she didn't know, and I specifically mentioned that other reps said there was a fix coming but this wasn't listed as part of the fix. She said well, we're not supposed to mention our internal discussion forums but I can tell you right now, what I'm seeing here says that yes, this issue is a known issue and will be fixed in an update that's scheduled for early March. I said if that's true, you've helped me more in 45 minutes than all other reps combined.

Was she blowing sunshine up my keister to get rid of me, since she "couldn't" replace my Nexus with another new Nexus? I have no idea. She didn't sound like she was impatient and/or just trying to get me off the phone. I'd like to believe it, and her story does coincide with other things I have read on the Interwebz. I guess we'll find out when the next OTA update is officially released OTA.

Could we be nearing the epilogue of my saga? Time will tell...

Looks like my sister is having problems with her nexus. Reboot issues. I guess a few times today. The most recent time when she called to give a heads up to relatives in Indiana where dangerous severe weather is occurring. NOT GOOD!

My only experience with a tornado happened last year. I was sent to Georgia for training for one week. It just happened to be the week of all the deadly tornadoes across the south. They put us up in a wonderfully pathetic hotel. Around midnight someone starts pounding on the door. I ignore it. Pounds on the door again. I ignore. The guy that I was rooming with was sleeping. The third time I finally go to answer and roommate wakes up. I open the door and the guy says...there's a big tornado coming we gotta go. I gotta a say I'm a pretty laid back guy. I was a little scared, but was more or less...eh, whatever. Turned on the tv and yep there was a big tornado coming right for us. So now most of us are like "holy shit we're gonna die". Myself and everyone start texting and calling family and friends, not knowing what might happen. Oh, instead of leaving we all just went to one room. After all that the tornado moved just enough to the north that it never touched us. I did, however, hear sounds from a storm I never heard before and saw some really cool lightning.

I saw some numbers today. Average yearly deaths by tornadoes...56 Number of deaths last year from tornadoes...551

Thanks for the condolences Lucky, lol. What you heard from verizon is the same that I heard: it is a known issue and a fix is coming in early March. At least we know you and I were told the same thing.

That is the one difference with mine rebooting, it always authenticates afterwards. Before I flashed 4.0.4 it would just reboot normally. Not sure what the difference is.

Wow. We are truly blessed here in Manchester! The worst of the storms went to the north & south of us: 20 homes were lifted off their foundations in southern Tennessee and a huge tornado was spotted going east on I-40 toward Nashville. What did we get? A couple of sprinkles amid mostly sunshine.

My experience with a tornado was unforgettable: it was night. We were in Opelika, Alabama's (right next to Auburn) historic district. BIG storm. I was on our wraparound porch watching the storm (Darling Bride wanted us all in the basement... I was too fascinated. Suddenly, flashes of GREEN LIGHTNING erupted and I heard the most God-awful noise I have ever heard: it sounded (not like a freight train) like a heavy filing cabinet being scooted across a concrete floor. My only theory was that it was the sound of thunder bouncing around off hail in the clouds... I really have no idea.

Anyway, we were again spared: next morning, NO DAMAGE to our home. Huge trees were uprooted and laid down gently just a block to the east.

I will never forget the green lightning or that sound... which I hope to never hear again.

Was it actually lightning, or an electrical explosion?

My only experience with a tornado was at Kennedy Space Center. We were on one of the bus tours, right in front of the Vehicle Assembly Building. All of the sudden we heard sirens, and off to the east. very near the launchpads, was a tornado. We watched it for a while, and the bus driver received permission to drive into the VAB (its rated to some ridiculous windspeed) if it approached us. But thankfully it headed out to the east away from us.

My university was hit on Christmas Day by a tornado, leveled an aircraft maintenance hanger, perforated the aircraft simulator building, severly damaged the auditorium, and caused the administration building to be condemned, on top of destroying half the university's fleet of planes. It then traveled across the road and leveled an apartment building. But being christmas day and hitting the college and college housing, not one person was injured.

Having made a career out of electricity and electronics, I can ASSURE you that this was not an electrical explosion. This was green lightning, cloud to cloud. Dangdest thing I've ever witnessed and I've seen some STUFF!

I was seven or eight at the time, but I remember a bad thunderstorm here where there was not only green lightning but the sky was a green hue following the storm as well. I can remember it distinctly because I was at my father's apartment and there was a bad accident nearby and the lifeflight helicopter landed right behind his building.

We see green skies all the time if there's enough hail in the storm. That's one way to know you should stay inside and make sure your comprehensive coverage is up to snuff. I hope everyone's loved ones are fine this evening. Glad to hear you guys dodged the mess, Chief.

If any of you follow severe storms you will have heard of the Andover, Kansas tornado in 1991. I was a senior in high school, my mom was working for Boeing. So I'm home from school, all the warnings go crazy, so I call my mom. Boeing is located in southeast Wichita adjacent to McConnell AFB. She says they've been told to go to the steam tunnels. My best friend and I decided it was going to stay south of us and head to the mall. We get to the mall just in time for them to shut it down due to the tornado. So we're all stuck, bored, in the middle of the mall. We decided to make a break for it just as the hail hit. We got pelted getting to my truck, it was pitch black where we were but sunny off to the west. As I'm trying to drive west, my buddy tells me I have to look at this, so I turned to look and a couple of miles away, you could just make out the edges of that monster. That cured me of any dreams of being a chaser... Fortunately I've never been close enough to hear one.

Look who's coming to town!

Samsung Galaxy S III said to be launching in April

Sure it's BGR so take it with a grain of salt. SEVERAL grains of salt. But I'll bet you a donut it goes to AT&T, T-Mobile and Sprint... and Verizon will leave its customers without this awesome babe of a phone.

TWO donuts.

I didn't have this option checked on before I rooted so I don't know where it is but let me dig around a little and see if I can find something.

Here's what I have found so far for you to try:

Go to Settings > Accessibility > Talkback - check to see your settings on this

If it's happening on web pages as well:

Disable Web Scripts in Accessibility.

I think you may have to choose between having the Talkback on or off though - I don't know that it's able to differentiate between you being on the phone or off.

Aw, I missed all the bowling discussion! Well, sadly I wouldn't have contributed much - my average is usually around 100, and my high score was a 175 that was total luck.

Interesting. TalkBack is off and Web Scripts is set to not allowed. So, I turned talkback on and allowed web scripts. I guess i will see what they do.

Maybe I installed an app that does this.....

Thanks for the suggestions.

Whoa! Talkback didnt last long....LOL. What does web scripts do?

Morning everyone! Guess I missed all the tornado talk. I called my mom yesterday to make sure my dad was okay (she's in PA right now), they live in southern Indiana. She said he's fine, the tornadoes were about 50 miles east of there.
When I lived in Lawrence, KS, I really want to see a tornado but missed out. We did have what they call a microburst. I was at work at the time and noticed this huge amount of wind come through. It caused a ton of damage, especially to the University. I found this clip on YouTube of the aftermath. It lasted no more than 2 min. We were out downtown after work and the sirens started going off again and there was mandatory curfew. Wild, but nothing more happened.

I am sorry to hear that. I hope she finds a phone more useful for her....as we are going to be doing the same searching for my fiance soon. She currently has a Dinc and refuses to go backwards to a "dumb phone" (her words....) so we are currently thinking resound or nexus for her. I think she likes my phone, but hard to tell sometimes.....good luck on her search.

I also want to say I hope that everyone is safe after this weeks' tornados. The only one I have been through was on base in Missouri, and they had us underground in the maintenance sheds, so we did not see or hear anything...just spent 3 days cleaning up the cars, humvees, tanks and buildings that were destroyed....the maintenance shed we were under got picked up and moved about 250 ft away, and destroyed, as well as 2 of our company's barracks buildings....flat and nothing left.
That was the last one for me...now I just watch Storm Chasers on TV.

Watching the news this morning about Henryville, IN. Incredible, just insane the amount of damage. My thoughts go out to those folks affected. Just looked it up on a map and it really wasn't terribly far from where my parents live.

Ryan, eesh, it's a tough time phone shopping. If she likes Sense, definitely give the Rezound a look. I still have yet to play with a Razr Maxx but that battery life looks amazing. Obviously the Nexus is the best option. I'm saddened by those who have all these problems (looks at Lucky), but mine has been just fine since launch.

This has been the comments that have heard from her, and I think a lot of my personal experience....but the only part of sense that she likes is beautiful widget clocks...which is what use on my nexus. So I think she is now seeing that there are other options on phones. She has asked my opinion on the phones, and because of the bloatware on moto phones, I can't justify suggestion the razors. Personally I think she will end up with something newer than the nexus, and since we are on VZW, who knows what will be available in the next couple of months. The other thing is that she uses it as a phone, maps, and the occasional Googling so it has to function for her......of course I have not had a single problem with my nexus....(kicking myself for the jinx..) but I would be concerned that she might get a lemon. Plus ICS is such an advantage we need to keep waiting for another device that she can like.

Never owned a Dinc, but I'm sure it's still kicking around just fine. My Droid was on its last legs when I upgraded (though the latest Liquid was keeping it pretty smooth). I'd say get her on a new ROM and wait out a month or so. I know the rumor of the GS3 for April has been pretty much squashed, but it's worth seeing if Verizon will carry (that or a Tegra 3 HTC phone).

Dreadnatty, I'm not saying that hard skills are bad. In fact, they're very important. You DO need to learn how to do things, how to balance a checkbook, how to live a productive life. But so are "soft" skills: like reason and thinking and learning from the past. It was George Santayana who said "Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it."

Never balanced a checkbook in my life, didn't think anyone still did that
Yeah, my budgeting skills are pretty poor and since being married, we certainly have to look at our savings for big purchases in the future.
