Right now I am taking my Master's degree, but it was set up with input from my company, and is much more useful to my daily job than a general Master's program at a university.

So I just wanted to say to everyone here, CONGRATS! We have passed the Droid Incredible Lounge! Less than three months, and they have been around for nearly two years! If interest at AF is any sign of the awesomeness of a phone, there is no doubt which is best

Hey y'all,

Thought I might add to this portion of the discussion as my life's path lends relevance to it.

I will be 30 on June 21 (takes a bow ) and have yet to complete a bachelor's degree. While I could be upset at myself for failing to reach that once easily viable goal, I am not. For many reasons I left college just after the start of year three. I realized that I had not been ready for college and needed time to find me. What transpired changed the course of my life forever. I picked up some really bad habits and at one point owned nothing more than an acoustic guitar and a weeks worth of clothing. When I finally said, "Enough!" I began my life's intended journey...

...I worked two jobs for a year straight, 60-70 hours a week, to pay off debt and save money. One of those jobs was as a barista for a globally recognized coffee company. I am still employed with that company today, though no longer at an entry position. And I have finally gotten to a place in life in which I am willing, able and ready to finish the education I prematurely started.

Why is this relevant you ask? In my company, one of the key drivers of successful performance are the distinguishing behaviors that drive one to work well with another. I cannot stress its importance in both customer relations and employee relationships. And in my life's experience, managing a group of young people around respect and dignity for each other did not come to me via college. I learned that stuff the hard way. And by no means do I believe I can't be learned in college. I also encourage higher education. I am taking that leap again myself this very year.

Thanks for listening.

To those affected by mother nature in its ugliest form, my family is thinking of and praying for you. My wife and I have been following it on television.

My degree is mechanical engineering. Because I grew up in an aerospace hotbed, I didn't want any part of the business due to its cyclical nature and not so wonderful workplace morale. Sadly, that's all that was hiring when I graduated all those years ago. So that's what I do. As for college, first you do need to learn both technical, or, hard skills, and intrapersonal skills. But I was forced to take all of these useless humanities classes that have had exactly zero bearing on any part of my life, in or out of work. And in engineering, you are taught theoretical stuff and some analysis, but very little design, and most jobs are in design. I agree with whomever said internships are the best solution. I had one, and it's amazing how much better the new grads tend to be that have done that.

Having said all that, college isn't for everyone. Trade school is best for some, military for others, etc. And sometimes it's just timing. I think we put way too much emphasis on going straight to college after high school here, when getting some real life lessons would do a lot of people a lot of good.

Kind of funny that Han is in 4th place and left the forums a month after launch. Prolific poster.

Most people don't realize that if VZW had delayed the GNex for another week or two, BB would have passed him in that thread. I think even Steven is watching her carefully.

Default Two More Cents on Education

Everyone here has a great perspective on education today, even the extreme views in the Watering Hole.

My sense is that there are good institutions and less than great institutions, good teachers and bad, good “students” and bad, and as noted some students that aren’t ready to study just yet and some that aren’t cut out for a college path at all. Some that just want to party and some that are on a serious path from early on.

I don’t think it’s fair to put blame ENTIRELY on higher education (some blame, yes). It really comes down to the kid AND PARENTS as much as anything else, starting in kindergarten. Too many parents simply defer to the educational system; some use it as daycare. Without a high level of parental involvement, without a set of performance standards, then the kids will flounder, may not achieve, may not ever be prepared for the competitive world out there. Society, meaning school administrators and parents, HAVE coddled kids a bit too much IMO, especially when EVERYone gets an A or a gold star, when no one comes in second, when no one fails. Maybe that’s fine for pre-school and the first few grades, but can you imagine middle and high school kids who are (mis)led to believe that nothing they do is ever wrong? It creates a sense of entitlement that does a disservice to the children who are not prepared for the real world. I’m not saying tell the kids that they are losers; just tell them that they can be great IF THEY WORK HARD, set some honest/realistic goals and standards at home, and hopefully they will discover a path that is right for them and work hard to achieve their personal goals.

This relates in part to what my kids are doing today. My son graduated from on-line high school and decided not to go to college. You can imagine my disappointment as a person who made it to a J.D. But he already was gainfully employed as a music journalist and DJ (not coincidentally the reverse of “JD” ). He said that college would only distract and delay him from his chosen career path. So we “allowed” him to pursue his dream job and is now, at 18, writing for magazines, producing events and performing on the radio and at the hottest clubs in Hollywood (at least that’s what he tells me ). College would not have served him well, and would never have helped him get a job in this line of work. His elementary and middle schools were very big on the touchy feely, communications and conflict resolution. His “hard” math skills were not great. Forget about memorizing dates. Did he learn how to learn? I have no idea. But he knows how to write and create and communicate with people.

Today, am in NYC with my daughter (16 and loser of the new iPhone, if you recall ) taking a tour of a preeminent dance academy where she was just accepted for the fall. Like her brother, she was driven from an early age and all we could do was support her goals, and occasionally push when pushing was needed (especially on the academic side). Now we are faced with the dilemma of sending her off to school across the country at a very young age. But to refuse to do so means passing on what is the opportunity of a lifetime, offered to only a small handful of dancers each year. She says that she is spiritually, physically, positively, absolutely, undeniably and reliably going. HELP ME, PLEASE! But like her brother, her “hard” skills are also less than perfect. Nonetheless, she has a clear path that she works hard to achieve.

Bottom line, hard skills mean a lot to some and nothing to others. It really comes down to the kid him/herself, their particular bent, and what we infuse as parents. And in the world today, as it “shrinks” thanks to technology and transportation, interpersonal skills become even more important.

So do I send her off?

Quick question for those of you who use a Mountek car mount (I know jbdan does), how do you detach the side part? The Nexus is just a bit big to fit sideways with the guard there.

IHateMyTreo - send her off, let her know that it's no dishonor to want to come home and that being on your own doesn't mean going it alone.

And make sure you're both set up with good videoconferencing and use it often.

In my opinion.

PS - my daughter went on archeology digs at that age. Not NYC, but I hear the part about striking out.

Thanks Early, that's the way it appears to be headed. The girls she met yesterday were quite welcoming - no Black Swans - so they will be a great support system, live and work together. And +1 on the video chats, although I can only imagine that the bedroom "in camera view" will be the only clean part of the room

Archaeology - very cool. My mom was a professional digger. Central America and Middle East. Collaborated with some of the greats. Where did your daughter dig? Does she still dig?

I usually counter with it being all about quality rather than quantity, but with that whole list pointing quality, I gotta give up to the toppers and not go there.

Instead, I will simply call out Steven as conspicuously missing.

Oh yeah, guarantee he's going to see this, uh huh.

IHateMyTreo,

I know I've said this before, but my Oldest step-son has been accepted to Mass Maritime (sorry can't say it enough). Part of that is that he will go out to sea annually, literally, one semester a year on a ship at sea learning. You just have to trust that they are in good hands and support their dreams.

Part of that is that he will go out to sea annually, literally, one semester a year on a ship at sea learning. You just have to trust that they are in good hands and support their dreams.
I DO remember you saying that, and that's a big-time accomplishment and huge step. Good for him and you as parents.

Yeah [sigh] you know in your heart this day will come, but you really try not to think about it until it actually happens. What it says to all you young parents or parents-to-be, enjoy the childhood years. They'll be bailing on you before you know it. Maudlin, huh?

C'mon man. This is about the only place where I haven't seen him "pop his head in".

Yeah, my budgeting skills are pretty poor and since being married, we certainly have to look at our savings for big purchases in the future.

Archaeology - very cool. My mom was a professional digger. Central America and Middle East. Collaborated with some of the greats. Where did your daughter dig? Does she still dig?
Daughter of one of our friends went to Alvin Ailey Homepage | Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater at about that age, she was 16 or 17 as I recall. Four years ago, seems like yesterday we were all pulling for her. Cirque du Soleil signed her.

My kid went on Native American historical digs about 1400 miles from here. She wanted field experience so she wouldn't end up classified as strictly a lab type, as she was all about lab foresensics for archeology. I think that I have one of the few kids that hung out at an autopsy lab when she was 15 and 16. Took a while to get her to not discuss her favorite autopsies at dinner without hurting her feelings.

Despite her firm plans to work in archeology or anthropology, she changed her mind and now works in a genetics lab.

Those are great stories. Your daughter sounds like a real trooper, strong in science. Acorn doesn't fall far does it?

Unfortunately with all my children being under 5, the only digging they do is in their nose. But I hope to be have such great stories of their successes someday as well. Kudos to the parents as well!

Well, my sister is no longer part of the android crowd. She returned her nexus for a iPhone 4s, but on the bright side, when no one is looking, I am going to abuse siri

Seriously though, as long as the phone works for her. Perhaps android was too much, she is not a tech junkie like I am. Nothing wrong with the iPhone, folks. Nothing at all. Different strokes for different folks, is that the saying?

Another take on the education posts I have been seeing while lurking...(I'll keep it short)

It took me 5 years to complete my Bachelor's degree in Information Systems because I hated THE school I was in (not school in general, but for financial reasons, I couldn't really transfer till last semester). Many of my friend that also graduated from this school hated this particular school as well. I learned nothing. Literally, I did not learn a damn thing. Where I am currently GOING to be working (hopefully starting in 2 weeks) 3 or 4 people also went to the same college and said the same thing. They learned nothing in college, got their degree, and learned everything while on the job and learned more within the first month of work then they did the 4 years they were at the college.

I am sure not all schools are like this (the school that I actually got my degree from was better, but I only went there 1 semester so it is hard to say) but I would take caution in the selection of school.

Oh and to add, my degree was CIS and when I went to that particular school and it was an Institute of Technology yet I still learned nothing. I got my degree from a primarily nursing school and learned more in one semester then I did the entirety of my time at the IT school.

Hello Gnex watering hole folks,

I need some advice. I am moving to an area where my present service provider (T-mo) gets basically either no service or 1 bar of g...not 3g or even e lol. Not a big fan of the big VZ but they do have the best coverage so I don't have much choice. Now onto phone choice. Yes I am posting in this thread so ya'll probably know which phone I have my eye on...especially since I have had ICS on my vibrant for a bit now and love it.

But have read on here that some are experiencing some audio issues and other problems. So before I pull the trigger on the nexus what does the community think or feel about this phone? Should I be looking for a date on the phone that is mfg newer so that I may get an issue free phone. I need to buy in the next couple of weeks so if anyone has heard about any upcoming specials and could pass them along I'd appreciate it? Thanks and look forward to your opinions.

Getnbzy, right now is a great time to be purchasing a new phone. Don't know if ICS was stock on your Vibrant or Touchwiz'd, but it's a huge upgrade from GB nonetheless.
As far as audio issues, I haven't experienced any. The call quality isn't quite as good as my Droid and Bionic, but it's no slouch. If you're looking for any deals, first time subscribers usually get a sweet deal on a phone. Definitely look at Wirefly and Amazon. Sometimes you can get a phone ($300 one) for a buck.

Edit: I just checked and the Nexus is running at $99 from both vendors on a new subscriber contract.

Some people have had issues with their GNex, but for me it is undoubtedly the best phone I've ever owned. The only problem I have with it is keeping it away from my iPhone wife who now wants to trade phones.

As an extra incentive, VZW is currently offerring double data for new customers. Not as good as unlimited, but 4GB/mo for $30 ain't bad.

It has been my feeling that Lucky's experience has been the exception, not the rule. Many of us are all set on are first GNex, others were OK after one exchange. As far as the GNex goes, it is an awesome phone.

Morning BB and everyone else. I thought this thread was all the "circus" you needed?

Anyway, have fun with your daughter today. I'll get some time with mine today too. I'm flying from Tampa to Minneapolis (in the air right now, I love inflight internet!) to Salt Lake City to have a two hour brunch at her sorority. It's a lot of traveling, but she's worth it.

Thanks! I'm quite excited as the commercials all show the cage with the dirt bikes this year. They left it out last year and its one of my favorite parts.

Ewwww...while I hate both teams, I hate UNC even more solely because of Roy Williams. I don't care what UNC fans tell me, but everything is about him. Between his "vertigo" at convenient times (when the camera is on him or when he gets on a boat and someone asks him about it and instead of avoiding the question and making it about the team, he rants on about it for 45 seconds) and just watching ESPN this morning and calling the team "my team" not "the team" or "our team" just REALLY sets me off. Jimmy Boeheim wouldn't be caught dead saying that haha.

So. Last night at 630 I decide to go to Zachs, a bar/restaurant about 3 minutes from me. I end up talking to guy from Boston. Cool guy, possibly drunk? He asks about a good singles bar and strip clubs. Good convo with the guy, but he his all over the place. I learned a lot about him in an half hour.

Then, all of a sudden, this big group of people comes in wearing neon green shirts. I forget what is printed on them? Two ladies from the group end up talking to me and say they are going from bar to bar to collect money to go to Africa. The next thing you know I'm being "kidnapped".

So there I am on one of two buses going bar to bar to collect money for some of these people to go to Africa. Most are drunk, like me. I don't know anyone I'm with. Any bar I go to I don't know anyone as I just moved here. All this time I'm out I have work in the morning and have to be up at 530a. I stopped the drinking of alcohol and started drinking LOTS of water. I couldn't risk showing up to work tipsy again. No, I'm not alcoholic LOL!

I ended up not getting home until 2a and was up at 530a. Oh...turns out they were doctors and nurses. Some are going to Madagascar to operate on kids with clubbed feet. The end.

Oh you just look like a butt hurt State fan
My wife is a Carolina grad who couldn't care less. We have a good friend who is a rabid Duke grad/fan and we always like to talk beef. I just like how it was redemption from UNCs loss a month ago. Cameron is probably one of the hardest places to play and I'm glad they pulled out the win!

Your wife sounds like mine. Went to school there for 4 years and never went near a basketball game. She was a hippie :-)

I was a Duke fan back when I was, I don't know, 13 or 14, and paid attention. I haven't watched college sports in..well..a long time.

I have several friends who went to both schools - and State for that matter - (I grew up in eastern NC) and it's always funny to watch them butt heads about it.

Hey all, I'm working on a big catchup RSRSS. Expect it in the next day or two.

I hope my fellow Nexaholics are having a good weekend! Not much going on today so I've had a chance to work on some of my airplane videos. Allow me to post a few I've done recently, for those that are interested. I've been having fun with Adobe Premiere Elements. Enjoy!
