Haha, was grocery shopping at the store yesterday and had a fruit roll up box with Yoda on the front, and all I could think was wow, Steven is a spokesman for fruit rollups? are you as happy with your phone as me?
Anyone know the best podcatcher for galaxy nexus? Google listen is good except I would like to be able to download my podcasts and have it saved where I am into them when i turn the device off.
Beyond Pod. Hands down. Great customization features...

I've run each one about 6hrs or so. I did about two battery charges per. I've had a very uneventful weekend lol..
Mr.Birdman is going to release the 4.0.3 with all the bug fixes.. best rom IMO 4.0.3 is crazy fast.
Glitches I've had with revolutionary:
The keyboard lag is worse then on the other roms. Its got a very slow landscape keyboard when typing reallg fast. I did NOT like the forced GPU rendering. Some apps don't support it and your sol on those apps. The app drawer had the typical lag. Nova fixes it. And the kernel had issues for me with OTG to my keyoard mouse. It would shutoff for no reason and not come back. Overall its real good, I've just been spoiled with 4.0.3
Thx . I thought the same about Rev. Have not tried the .3 flavor I'm waiting one something very stable and look forward!

Hi Steven! Nice to have you back around but glad you took some time off. Very very happy you're enjoying your Nexus!
I didn't realize it was so few. I figured that there were a lot that bought that are just happy to have it and not posting anymore. Well, it's a good thing some people didn't - if they had then Han may not have been able to exchange his phone twice.

Thanks for reminding me, need to get rid of the search bar.
Just add nova launcher beta apk into your system folder and you'll have ics functionality as well as gb.. which I'm more used to. More transitions, too. Better launcher, no search bar. More options. Link

See, now this is what I mean. This is a small point of confusion - do custom ROMs include their own kernels? Or could I, say, install the Android Revolution ROM andthis kernel?

Yes. And it depends on what the rom dev puts in his/her rom, their choice.
You can flash any kernel (with compatibility of course) to your rom. Fransico's kernel looks really good, I'm waiting for him to get the LTE version out. Some guinea pigs are testing it as we speak.

Yeah I've been keeping up with his thread, very excited about some of the features he's incorporating. There don't seem to be that many ROMs around yet, are there a lot of kernels being developed?

I've seen several kernels, but so far only for GSM. LTE should follow very soon. Francisco's should be the first I know of incorporating all the said tweaks. Power standby looks to be super on his gsm testing! The developement for this phone is insane I can't believe what is out already
After using smartass and smartass v2 for so long on the Inc I'm looking forward to seeing what kind of battery life we are going to achieve. From the looks of it now (with stock battery and 4.0.2 kernel) it's going to be very good.

When I flashed the Universal HD rom, it made me activate again, etc. I also lost the clockworkmod app. Is that bad?
If I simply reinstall it from the market, will I be okay?
Also, I remember that I made a nandroid backup when I rooted earlier today. Will I be able to get rid of this rom I flashed by restoring the nandroid backup from the recovery boot screen?
TIA

What exactly is the relationship between the ROM and the kernel? For example, they both seem to mention power governors and battery life improvement. Could they both be affecting the same area? If so, could there be any conflict, or does one take precedent?

Its not an issue. Any rom built from the VZW releases have the activation built into the setup app.
You can go back to what you had before by flashing your nandroid backup. I usually recommend wiping twice before you flash the nandroid

I'm really not that knowledgeable everything I've learned is just through trial and error. Governors are for the kernel and control the speed at which the cpu will run and how aggressive it will react to a user request. ROM's have little if any effect on battery life. The kernel, in the most simplified form and just about as much as I know, is the bridge/communication between the hardware and software. Earlymon needs to drop in he is much more technically inclined than I ever want to be
btw Francisco's Kernel is in testing for LTE versions and nightly's should start rolling out this week hopefully Wed! Can't wait

It's floating around somewhere on xda. I can post the link tomorrow (I'm not home and I have the site bookmarked on my laptop).
Its exactly the same one as stock, except optimized with true blacks and more vibrant colors. I don't know why they made it fake black in the first place.
Huge difference maker.

NEVER do a factory reset from within android on the Gnex. It will wipe the Sdcard as well ;-)

nova
Guys I am not rooted, so I am thinking nova might be my best bet to get rid of the Google bar at the top of each screen, buuuuttttt ...... does nova copy over all your existing screen content like go launcher does or do you have to customize from scratch again???
And, on another topic, why does my keyboard lag in landscape mode but not in portrait??

Wait....you have the GN!? Welcome, guess I missed your inaugural ball
Have to customize again. But it's fast!
I think this is something within 4.0.2 idk why it lags sometimes. I've heard .3 rids us of this

Had the same problem. There was an update, so I ran it, and still nothing. Then I installed Handcent to see if it had the problem, and it didn't....but then I went back into GoSMS, and the names showed up. Weird...but whatever...it's working now.

SyncMyPix works for that, and you can set it up to run at specified intervals. I used it on my DX because Facebook pics didn't sync with my contacts properly with that either.

Nova was just updated to Beta 3 in the last few hours. Its a real solid build. I just want them to incorperate the ability to hide the status bar
It is nice. I couldn't get the instructions down on the install to keep the widgets enabled in the app drawer. I moved the apk to /system, but they still did not appear. Any tips?

Best thing is to download the novaupdate.zip file and flash it in recovery
Setting and installing system apps through root explorer is a PITA

Trying the handcent download to see if it fixes it now. I read the comments in the market about go sms and we aren't the only ones experiencing this

Morning everyone.
Planning on flashing some 4.0.3 mod today, but we'll see. I want to see if the new kernel from 4.0.3 helps to solve that Keep Awake issue. I think the sounds helped a bit, but it was more probably I was babying my phone because I wanted the sounds to be the answer.
For those wondering, my fastest way to post pictures here is with the imgur app (imgur: the simple image sharer) -- it was originally made for reddit, but its always up and I just like how simple it is. Upload from gallery and click "Copy Image BBCode" and then just paste it into the app here for sharing.

Gotta admit, got my phone on Friday, shipped by VZW, and have not put it down except to sleep.
However, up till yesterday, I was thinking I was just going to root and track down the ROMS that looked exciting. But that was mostly because I wanted the GWallet functionality....Now I have it on stock ICS.
Hopefully you guys/gals can convince me to root....Will be following along.

Hi!
The Following User Says Thank You to BabyBlues For This Useful Post:
After getting the phone, I wasn't able to chime in in the pre-release thread before it was locked, so I thought I'd chime in here. Got the phone Thursday morning around 11am - apparently got the last SIM card the store had that morning. Seeing the occasional quirk here and there (not unexpected on a new toy), but I'm loving the phone for the most part. I haven't gotten bold enough to do too many mods, such as flashing ROMs, but maybe I'll play with some of that after Christmas. Seeing what some of you have already done, it looks like I've got some studying to do, but it should be fun as well.
So........ download Nova and start over at the point of customizing, -OR-, just bite the bullet and unlock/root and have to download everything again?
Any suggestions? And if I unlock/root, can I still get OTA updates?
I unlocked as soon as I could so that I wouldn't lose too much, making sure to not download anything non-essential until I was able to unlock. It's definitely worth the trouble, unlocking/rooting is the ultimate customization.
As for OTA updates, unlocking won't affect them at all. However, I've heard that rooting can. But of course, if you're rooted, you can just flash the update manually. I'm probably biased, but I'd say it's worth it.

If you're rooted you will get OTAs but most likely break root. Best part about Nexus is that you can just download superuser from market and have root back (afaik). Custom ROMs are what block OTAs as developers modify ota-keys to prevent them from downloading and breaking anything.

From what I have read and been told, perma-flashing cwm by either deleting or renaming the recovery file breaks OTAs
Just finished my second full charge cycle and my last one was 25 hours with moderate usage (screen on for about 4 hours at 40% brightness, wifi, zero bars of 3G/4G). First one was a little over 8 hours.
Very impressed, I won't have any trouble making it through the day with this thing.
I have had a couple random reboots and accidentally set LightFlow to operate my SAMOLED backlight which resulted in a factory reset (which didn't delete my /sdcard partition BTW).
Unlocked and rooted but still running the stock ROM.
