Good morning folks!

Sorry I was completely off line yesterday ( and of course, you all desperately missed me ) for a cardio stress test. That was a sucky FOUR HOURS in the hospital! Anyway...

Galaxy Nexus reaches END OF LIFE???

Samsung Galaxy Nexus News, Rumors, Updates and More - Drippler

Well, we knew it had to happen sooner or later... but wow what a ride it's been! Hard to believe that the epic pre-release thread and now the venerable Watering Hole will follow the Motorola Droid threads into the history books, but we all know they will

Let's make the most of it while we still can, folks. No doubt this time next year the vast majority of us will be in a NEW epic pre-release thread... and then the commensurate Watering Hole attached thereto. And we'll make new friends and say fond farewell to some old ones.

But just remember that tech geeks never fade into obsolescence - we just keep upgrading

Let's share the love while we can here, folks, looks like our Nexus days are numbered...

Morning Chief, Dread, Anti! I agree, sad to see the carriers starting to pull out from selling them, but we are far from RIP and I for one am still quite happy with our Nexie. Anti, good luck on the test today! Back on the coast, keeping an eye on Sandy, local forecast calling for rain all weekend and winds in the 30-40 range.

Good luck Anti...

...and I'm sorry if I brought everyone with me into my Beloved Nexus' mid-life crisis. But let's face it: this time next year Key Lime Pie - or even Lemonade (or whatever) - will be coming out, along with a new slew of superphones. And most of us here will be staring at end of contract.

Naturally, my phone account is racking up the moolah, so that about this time next year I'll be able to plunk down full retail on one. I'll be DANGED if Verizon is going to seize my unlimited data because I have to subsidize a phone. They may kill it off entirely next year (by which time I hope & pray another 4G provider has put up a nearby tower)... but I'll give it up kicking and screaming.

I'm not trying to be nihilistic at all, I'm just making advance funeral arrangements for Ginny

Good morning all - was out yesterday sick, feeling a bit better today.

Really hoping this storm misses us because if not its going to be horrible, absolutely horrible.

BTW I love how powerful our phones have become. I am SSH'd into my webserver installing SVN for some code repository I want to create. I was blown away besides the fact that my eyes hurt from looking at the small font.

Also, yeah about that "apology".

I absolutely LOVE watching a college football fan base rally the troops around their team of choice. The #HailState and #WeBelieve movement going on the last couple of days with MSU has been possibly the coolest thing to ever happen at MSU. Attempting to knock off #1 Alabama and move to 8-0 on the season. People are putting up signs and such EVERYWHERE for the game this weekend. I don't know if this one was real or not, but someone posted a picture of the Wrigley Field sign with "We Believe" on it yesterday. A couple of fans went to Alabama's stadium and put a "#HailState We Believe 8-0" shirt on the statue of Bear Bryant. Now there are signs on the Today show and other news stations in NYC showing up this morning. Absolutely insane!

Doggone it!

What money do I use for an N10? Do I use next year's full retail phone money that's saved up? Or put this on my Christmas list and let the Darling Bride "let" me buy it for myself for Christmas - with my own money?

Or do I hold out for a new laptop, that can do infinitely more?

Decisions, decisions...

If the rumors are true, this is going to be a highly uncharacteristic Nexus device. A charging port that isn't micro USB and a Exynos processor?

As if Robin and Speaktoit Assistant needs competition... but if you're really into Nuance's Dragon voice recognition, here's their foray into the Android assistant world:

Dragon Mobile Assistant

Apparently a good foundation for a solid app, but room for improvement and a lot of it.

Personally I am still debating... I have 6 machines running at home, so I may end up moving OSs around and adding a win8, since I still have 1 machine on xp.... Otherwise it's a good improvement if the hardware is suitable....
I am also running WHS 2011 on our server, and not sure about the compatibility yet.

I have been reading a lot about it tonight. I have a Dell laptop, windows 7, 64 but with a multi touch screen. Two years old. Seriously thinking about it, just have to do more research so I don't lose any important features.

They still seem like more of a novelty than truly useful. Google now does a great job that for my needs is more realistic.

Morning all. Today is going to be a fun day at work. Things are running really slow, I probably can write this entire post while waiting for the operation to finish. I love technology.

Yeah, no go for me on Windows 8 either. Maybe if I had a touchscreen laptop. But I don't.

Morning Anti!

I'm still debating on the Windows 8. The uber-techy geek in me wants the latest and greatest, but I just don't know yet. I need to see what it added other than that crappy Metro interface. The sad thing is, I think the wife would love the Metro interface The good thing is, you can still get back to the regular desktop pretty easily...so it's going to depend on what other features and support was added. May research that a little today.

BTW...I've really noticed this a lot lately as I've been getting some use out of some apps across Android AND iPad...There's a few companies that really need to step up their game on Android apps. It makes Android look bad, but in reality Android is just as capable. Specifically the DirecTV app and the Weather Channel app. Both are absolutely beautiful on the iPad but just look like a half-***ed attempt on Android. Mint is a really good example of making the Android app just as good as the Apple one. Still a half-step behind the Apple version, but not enough for the majority to notice. Great app.

Bummer Dread.

I agree, do they not look at the market share? Android has a much bigger user-base, and yet its the Apple apps which are given the most focus by many of these companies.

Good luck and a bummer on the Chrome book. We are looking to buy either a Nexus 10 and/or a new laptop pretty soon, and are looking at the Chrome books. Unfortunately for our limited budget... we also like Samsung products, (my wife's dad has a year old Samsung laptop that we like....) But still deciding overall. However, I am definitely going to get a Nexus 10...just hoping there are options for storage that will work for us!
Morning all... Hope everyone has a great weekend.
We are headed south a few hours to see friends, probably for the last time before we move. Also something we are trying to do more of... Just visit people and places before leaving the state.

N10 looks to be the identical body as the Note 10.1. I played with one for a sec at BB and really don't like it. As bland as the Tab 10.1 was, I liked how it felt. Light, far less bezel.
If tablet navigation isn't built into the N10 (as it is with most N7 ROMs), that's terrible. The nav bar just looks horrible on a 10" device having it all centered.

Ryan, if you haven't read the reviews on Amazon yet, there's a couple really great ones:

Morning all. I'm up way too early for a Saturday....have a bat mitzvah at 9:45, then the party afterwards and a costume party at 8 tonight. Will be a long day!!

I have to agree with the no's on Windows 8....looks too clunky to me. I like my traditional desktop thank you.

And I know a few of you have the Nexus 7's and I've looked at comments here and there but my best friend's father in law wants a non apple tablet and they want to give him one for his birthday (early December)......is there anything I should know to tell her that is not good ?

As for Apple vs Android apps the only thing I can ever come up with is that iOS is pretty standard. They do one big update a year and then developers can work with that. As much as I love Android there are still a couple different versions and some things are compatible with this and not that, or older hardware can't run something as well. I'm not knocking Android at all cause its my favoritest but its that its more fragmented in OS.

That stinks Dread!

So completely off-base from this discussion, but the total lack of respect being given to MSU is absolutely unbelievable. If I'm being real, I don't expect a win, but I do think we have all the right personell to pull off an upset if a few things go our way. The line on the game hasn't moved from 24 points all week. I haven't seen a prediction by any national media source of less than a 25 point win for Bama, some in the 30's! Most saying it'll be close for a quarter, maybe a half. They gave Ole Miss more credit than this! I know we haven't played anyone, but geez, outside of Michigan, Alabama hasn't either! In the past, we have been known to implode, but not in recent years. It may happen tonight, but I don't see it. I know the players and coaches are sick of hearing it because us fans sure are.

It absolutely baffles me Ryan. To publish an app in the Play Store, you pay a one time fee of $25. To publish in Apple, you have to pay a yearly $99!!! That makes it very difficult to justify writing for iOS for me. I would love to put my app out there for iOS but it just isn't cost effective. I don't really remember, but I'm not even sure you can get the dev kit from Apple without paying the registration. I may be wrong on that though.

And BB, while that is true for the older Android devices, it really is starting to go away as more devices are migrating towards 4.0 and up. Once all of the pre-4.0 devices are gone, fragmentation will be no more of a discussion with Android than it is currently with Apple having the iPhone 3.5", iPhone 4", iPad mini, iPad, and iPad retina display.

I noticed that yesterday. Why isn't the nav bar over on the side when in landscape mode? It would look so much cleaner and I would think more practical since most of the time you hold it on the sides.

Tablet apps are still few and far between. You can visit the Play Store and they now have a section for tablet version of apps. Some stand out like Swiftkey (segregated keyboard), Pulse looks great, as does Currents.
Speed really is spectacular. Even though it's the same internals as my Prime, I find it a bit faster in regards to app switching and scrolling.
If your father in law is into ROMing (or you could help him), putting on "tablet mode" really helps open up screen real estate. It's not perfect, but I personally prefer it.

Agree with that 100% Most ROMS for it now have a force tablet mode while keeping the same LCD density which is MUCH MUCH better than changing the density to force tablet mode.

Hmm, haven't messed with changing PPI density and just forcing tablet mode with CNA. Is there a big difference?

If you force tablet mode without changing the density, it just leaves your icons and such the same size. When you change the density to force tablet mode, your text and icons get smaller and spacing gets messed up on your app drawer and such. It's really all just preference. I actually just changed my density back to 160 and it's not as bad as I remember from before.

Calling Rom Devs on this one? Might be something to that.... But again with the fragmentation....
And I agree, the screen sizes and work to make everything seamless should be the goal, but looks is a lot of it! Going to have to wait and see... Hopefully there will be someone's N10 that I could play with, or more reviews... Thanks for the link btw!

Off topic...
I have to say I still LOVE the looks and questions I get when I use Gwallet!!! Woo Hoo! Did Petsmart the other day and got into a 10min conversation with the checker about it... Then this morning at the gas station... Had about 8 people drooling and asking questions... 3 of them pulled out I5s and the rest pulled out GS3s or HTC Ones... Haha! They all said... I gotta get me that! It was.... Great!

Haven't used G Wallet in forever. Used it a couple times at Whole Foods. Cashier nearly nodded off without any interest.
I like it, but if my wallet is in my back pocket, entering a PIN is entering a PIN.

Great reviews!
So the reason I mentioned still debating on the Chrome book and WHS2011...I need IE to log into my server. We run all programs, such as photo shop, eclipse, Expressions Web, etc directly on the server, and WHS requires IE to interact... Wonder if that will be my deal breaker....if I am buying a laptop, I will need that access...and I know that the N10 does not have IE...that will just be a play toy...and for travel in the car, tethered to Nexy!
Still looking tho!! Thanks!

Ohio State vs. Penn State, neither can get into a bowl game. So we consider this one

People have been trying to drum up support for a game at the end of the year between the two and having the money going to charity.

Our book keeper updated her browser to IE9. Haven't used it myself but it looks pretty slick. Too bad you can't use Chrome for those services. Wonder if there's any hack for it though?
