Well bummer and plus for you Anti!
Check out the new camera, it's pretty sweet. I know some folks are having issues depending on what ROM they're on. I'm on CNA 3.8.0 and it's working just fine (both cam and gallery). The "live" quick controls are awesome. Can't wait to see as much 4.2 as possible baked into the new ROMs.

Hello all Apologies for my extended absence. My thoughts are with everyone in NY and NJ and everywhere else affected by Sandy. I know we've got a lot of New Jersians in here, I sincerely hope all of you are safe and sound. Here in Boston we got quite a lot of wind, but not as much rain as was expected, and everything was pretty much back to normal on Tuesday.
For the past couple weeks I've been at a new temp job that's about 20 miles outside Boston, I have to take the extended commuter rail out there each morning, and back each evening. I usually get up around 6, and make it back home around 7 or 7:30, usually just enough time to eat dinner and veg on the couch with the lady before going to bed to start the process over again. Unfortunately, I've had just about zero energy to do pretty much anything otherwise. I'm going to make a special effort to keep doing my news posts for you guys, but I think until further notice it'll be a weekly task. Hope everyone will be understanding. In the meantime, I've basically done zero checking of tech news over the past couple weeks - have I missed anything big? Your guys' turn to tell me what's going on! (IHateMyTreo, loved the RSRSS-style weird news posts, please keep doing those!)
Other than the new job and the storm, things are pretty good here. I'm still on Sourcery v2.2, but it's really started to lag my phone. I'm also having weird issues with my vibrate/silent/ringer toggle (I use the Elixir 2 widget) not staying in the mode I choose. For example, I'll put my phone on silent before going to sleep, but sometime during the night it'll put itself on normal, and I'll be disturbed by my email or text notification noise in the morning. Very strange. :/ Are people on the newest version of Sourcery satisfied with it?
Anyway, hope everyone here is doing well, I miss this place terribly as part of my regular routine, I promise I'll be stopping in more often. My mother is actually on her way in to visit from Chicago from now until Sunday, so I may again be MIA until around then, but perhaps when you all see me next I'll have a huge link post ready. Stay well all of you!

Good morning all of you Nexicans (and our brothers and sisters that poke in and hang out here). Beautiful morning here, off to take the little guy to the vet today, he has been sneezing and shaking his head violently lately. He has never had allergies, so we are concerned that the old guy might have something else going on. At his age, i guess we should expect it. Have a great morning everyone and here is hoping those of you without power are back on the grid soon.
Morning folks! Thanks to Copacetic I took the dive with Windows 8 last night. I ran the upgrade assistant advisor or whatever and it just had one program that it said didn't work and one that had an upgrade. One was Thunderbird e-mail client, it had an upgrade, so I just uninstalled and I'll re-install later if I need it. The other I think was the Windows defender or whatever is on Windows 7. I'm sure there's a replacement for Windows 8.
After that, it was a really quick install even with my dual-boot set up. I just had to sit there and make sure it didn't reboot and sit at the bootloader choice too long and go into Ubuntu. The first time, it booted 3-4 times and then the screen went blank and stayed blank on the last boot. So I powered down and it came back up saying it failed install and restored Windows 7 for me.
Turns out it was my fault. I tried again and figured out that it was detecting my TV (second monitor) as my default and it wasn't on at the time. When I unplugged the HDMI cable it instantly switched over to my monitor and installation finished very quickly. 1 hour process tops including download (that took 20 minutes for me). Haven't played with it much yet, but I'll sit down and get used to it tonight. The only problem I noticed was my Photoshop and Lightroom installs didn't stick, so I'll have to re-install those.
ALSO, installed the 4.2 camera and gallery last night. Very nice!
Morning geek, your entry added one more crucial step, unplug all devices. That caused one of my failures as well. Glad it went so smoothly!
Had I turned on my TV and had it on the HDMI input from the PC, I would have noticed, but it wasn't on and I couldn't for the life of me figure out why it would show the bootloader and even the windows 8 logo for a few seconds and then go blank. When it finally hit me I thought, "DUH!" and sure enough, that's what it was. Wasn't a failure by the installation process, just a failure of my common sense which caused me to end the install process.

Anyone been on Lifehacker lately? When I try to go there i end up on lifehacker.com update. At the top of the page it says The Lifehacker backup site. Is this new? Its totally different from what I am accustomed to. Or does it mean their servers are down due to Sandy?

Server is down due to Sandy. io9 is the same way. Gizmodo was until yesterday.
Photosphere does take some getting to used to. One sample of our office:
Either way, I love it! Also really like the quick controls without having to go into Settings.

Happy almost a Friday to you all....
This weekend will be great. The wife and I are headed up to Cambria and San Simeon, CA.. Home of Hearst Castle and lots of galleries, restaurants and moonstone beaches... And our psuedo-honeymoon.

Hi Copacetic! Luckily we never lost power. And gas is horrible to try to find. Thankfully both of my parents vehicles had full tanks (I'm the dope that didn't think of it till Monday afternoon for my own car ). And today I got to climb the tree that is laying across the state property in our yard and video tape our moron neighbor throwing his debris into the area. Don't know the actual legality of him doing so but he has a big fence up and doesn't have to see it while we do have to see his crap. He wasn't real happy about me taping him and asked what he was supposed to do with the branches....I told him to drag it to the front curb like everyone else in town. Then I sat down for a while to make sure the lovely man got the hint.

If I can manage it I would totally do it. I wouldn't force my way in - just stand at the gate and nicely say Trick or Treat! I figure at least someone would find it amusing.

Win 8 installed, media center installed... Now on to figure out how to reconnect my server.... And then what anti virus I will be using.... And we should be good. Not too bad, and no issues!
So everyone is jumping on the Win8 train, eh? Perhaps I'll give it a whirl tomorrow. Only $15 or so? Does it need more RAM to run smoothly? My laptop has 4Gb, enough?

Hard to say, but probably not, lol. Nuke facility guards take things very seriously. You don't wanna mess with a guy or girl that has an AR-15 and a side arm strapped to them fully loaded at all times. Trust me, these aren't merely rent-a-cops.

Yup and yes.. It's enough.
Just go back a few pages to Copacetic post about turning off all of the non WIN services... That was a key.. That I forgot to do the first time... But I did it the second time around, and it ended up working out perfectly.
BTW, it's working great for me. Only thing not working is the TV tuner, which apparently Sabrent has not gotten their win8 drivers up yet. Otherwise, we like it. In fact my wife told me that's more like what she could see herself using... But we will see!
TGIF folks!

It's actually supposed to run more efficiently than Windows 7 I think. It's $15 if you have bought a Windows 7 PC in the last 6 months (I think), $40 for an internet download install if not purchased within that timeframe, and $60 for a hard copy of the upgrade disc.

Plus one to all of the above on windows 8. I have 4 gb and an i3 with no issues at all. I am really enjoying windows 8. Its sort of like when you put a new rom on your phone and suddenly it feels like a new phone. For $40 I feel like i got a new laptop, pretty sweet if you ask me. (don't forget to get your free copy of media center, it is not included in windows 8 and i think the offer expires at the end of the year).
Update on my install... Found the drivers for my tv tuner card... Woo Hoo! Also got the win8 system connected to my server. I am using WHS2011 which is also running Norton 360, and protects all of the machines in the house through the server... But I was running MSSE on each machine as well, just as a precaution, which is not available for Win8? Or did I miss something?
I was using MS Security Essentials... Anyone else? And if so what did you plan to use now... Or did you decide to switch? I know they have some of it built into win8, but just curious on the options you guys are using.... TIA

The $40 cost is why i jumped on it plus the free media center. When I upgraded a computer to windows 7 several years ago the cost was about $150. This is a great deal!
Did anyone else use the consumer preview edition prior to upgrading? I can remember using it and not being impressed at all by win8. Has there been radical changes since then?

I am not sure the word radical applies, but the changes that were made make it upgradeable easily, compatible with more devices, and accessible from anywhere much easier... Basically no big changes.
The compatibility is a big thing for me, as well as having it be smoother in touch use... I wasn't impressed with the preview either, but the lower pricing means that more people will adopt, and the market will get better over time since the devs have more access to it. I hope.
So far it does everything that Win7 did for me... Just smoother. Oh and my wife says she likes it better... So that helps.
Personally I love the built-in mail functionality. I can add all of our accounts (have like 5 between the wife and I) and check them all without going to a single site and logging in. I thought I would hate the tiles, but I really like them now. It really makes your desktop more like a phone/tablet interface so it makes accessing certain information very quick and easy.
I also face an upgrade issue because my desktop runs win7 home premium x64, and my laptop runs win7 professional x86. I know going from vista->7 you had to match version for an upgrade. This sounds like I'm going to have to buy two upgrades.
Hi everyone. Scanning through the pages I'm very happy to see that it looks like all my East coast friends survived Sandy.
I was "suppose" to fly from Paris to JFK Monday. Obviously that didn't happen so I got to spend a few extra days in Europe. At least I was there and not stuck in a NY hotel like some of my colleagues.
With a big operational disruption like this it takes a while to get planes and pilots back into position. Anyway, it's good to finally be home.
Does anyone here know server-side scripting? I have a cool python script that reads the output .csv from this app (current widget) and uses it to do some numeric integration and esitmate your battery capacity. it can be used for anything from testing a new battery to seeing how much your battery has degraded.
my problem is that I have no idea how to run it on a server such that someone can upload their log from current widget and then I just analyze it and give a capacity. Could anyone point me in the right direction for something like this?
Alternatively, if you want to just do it (for all I know this could be a 15 minute task for someone who knows what he is doing), I will host your html/php/whatever on my site and you will obviously get a prominent credit.
