Morning folks! Hope everyone had a great weekend! Took the wife out ice skating Saturday. We always go back to where we went ice skating on our first date every year on the weekend before Christmas as a first date anniversary of sorts. As usual, the wife skated while I tried not to fall while the little ankle-biters skated circles around me.

A lot of the discussion over the weekend between us though was of Friday's tragedy. It was kind of a reality check and really sobering that we had to even have this discussion, but we did anyway. I didn't have to tell her this because I knew she would anyway, but I told her if something ever did happen like that to do whatever she had to do to protect the children. She loves her students so much though, that I knew that wouldn't even be a question, just a matter of reaction to her. Really sobering and scary to think about.

That's really sweet to go ice skating, Geek (and that you keep that tradition going strong.
Still soaking in this tragedy. Why I keep reading internet commentors is beyond me. Outrageous things being spewed out.

Since I don't have cable I'm not bombarded with news about the tragedy so the only thing I see is on the internet and I have barely looked into any of it. I know everything I need to know about...it happened and who did it. It was senseless and horrific. And from what I've heard the media went too far on reporting it. Interviewing little kids about it? Really? Screw your ratings.

What has upset me so much about the media coverage is not that they keep plastering the name and face of the shooter all over the place (although I do think that's a practice that should change), not that they interviewed the kids (not a big problem with that)... It's the fact that every piece of coverage I've seen devotes less than half of the time to the facts of the event, the heroic stories, and the memory of the lives lost and then quickly turn to politics. Ex, how the President is handling it (body language analysis), and arguments for and against gun control. This is not the time for political plays. This it the time for recognizing the fallen, recognizing the heroic efforts of the teachers, encouraging and praying for that community, etc. The politics can and will play out later and will take care of itself without the media pushing their views on how this affects it down our throats.

Just absolutely terrible these parents have this loss just before the holidays. A time to cherish those moments of your children opening up Santa's gifts on that morning.

This. Granted, I don't have kids, but I have nieces. I called them the other day, just to say hi, and that I love them. My one niece is getting ready to start school.

This is a dark world we live in anymore...

I agree, just attempting to talk about the issue at work brings up gun control politics withing a minute or too. This is my last week and then a get a month off. One of the perks and also problems with being a college prof. Guess I'm going to be hanging around here a lot with all you fine people.

I sent a pm to Steven asking him to remove my title of Guide. A couple days after becoming a Guide I decide to limit my time on the internet. Needles to say I have not performed any Guide duties. Apologies to all you for not doing my part. I'm not leaving the forum, I'm just trying not be on the internet so much. You other Guides keep up the good work! Again, sorry.

Hey all, long time no see Hope everyone is well! Apologies for not being around more often.

For the holidays this year, I've finally decided to ask for a tablet. I think taking my big laptop on my Israel trip in a few weeks would be cumbersome, and a tablet would be much more convenient and portable. I was hoping some of the tablet owners here would help me out, as I'm having trouble deciding which one to get, I want to keep it under $200, but I think I would prefer a 10-inch model. I've heard good things about the Coby Kyrus line of tablets, but they're not officially supported by Google, and can't get access to Google Play without being rooted. So I guess my question is, do you guys think I should go with the Nexus 7, or a larger tablet that will need to be rooted? Thanks in advance for any opinions

EDIT - Further thoughts: I don't mind rooting whatever tablet I buy, but I don't know if rooted Google Play will function in the same way, this is totally new territory for me. Is rooting for Google Play easier than sideloading all my apps? Could I transfer a TiBu backup .zip to my tablet and simply download all my apps to the tablet?

Razor, if you're looking for a 10" you'll be strapped. Looks like deals can be found on a TF300T, but you'll likely have to get closer to $300.
I definitely recommend a N7. If you're looking for something with more productivity, I love my Chromebook (you can get the Acer for $200 I believe). Really don't know anything about the Coby line.

Hey dread, thanks a ton. Obviously my first thought was the N7 because of all the great things you guys say about it I guess I thought about a 10 inch because of the thrill of seeing apps blown up that large, my games, etc., but maybe I should go and play with some tablets at a Verizon store or Radio Shack or something.

Definitely can recommend a N7, Razor. Great tablet. It has a really good display. You'll really be strapped to find a decent 10" for $200. Can't beat the N7 for that price range. Might even suggest a Kindle Fire.

I'll be honest, I really don't like 10" tablets. Even the lightest ones are still too heavy for me (I'm a little weak/lazy guy ). Only reason I like my Prime, keyboard dock. But, it's actually still heavier than my Chromebook. Also, the latter has a better keyboard and trackpad albeit a worse screen.

Well, as I mentioned, the Coby Kyrus line seems decent at that price (ie. this one at $149), but I need to figure out if it will function correctly, even once it's rooted. Decent specs (1 GHz processor, 1 GB RAM, 8 GB storage), and it's only 1.5 pounds.

EDIT: Umm, okay, I'm not sure why the Amazon link isn't working, it's some kind of issue with the Phandroid redirect code. I'll put the link here, just copy and paste:
Code:
http://www.amazon.com/Coby-Kyros-10-1-Inch-Android-Built-/dp/B0075W8E4A/ref=sr_1_1?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1355757155&sr=1-1

I agree with the other and would go Nexus 7. 10' tablets can be kinda of bulky and uncomfortable to to hold for long periods of times. The transformers are nice because of the keyboard dock, but will stretch your budget a little too much. I have a nexus 7 and the infinity, and they really server two different purposes. I end up spending more time on the infinity because my GF is always using the nexus 7.

Plus the Nexus 7 will seem very similar to your Gnex.

Razor, if you have a need for keyboard functions on a Tab, it really doesn't work well as a stand-alone. I tried to use my Xoom as a laptop replacement while I travel (TSA PITA, weight, charger, etc), but the Tab could not cut it because I am document-intensive. So if you need a lot of keyboard functions like page up/down, ALT-TAB-Shift etc, get a separate BT keyboard - or stick with the laptop ;-)

Yes please.
We have a place down the street from us that specializes in boozy shakes. Haven't been yet. Although all the dairy and fat with the booze.... that'll be a rough next morning.

Default JUST a Technical Question!!

OK, this has political ramifications, but is just a tech question. If the greenies and reddies think it belongs in the political forum, by all means move it there.

Does the technology exist yet to put a chip in new guns, with a broadcast signal in designated zones (like schools, malls, theaters, courthouses) that disables the gun?

I realize that if this is possible technologically, there will still be a long debate over whether this abridges rights, and how and how long it would take to implement, and whether bad guys can skirt the controls. I'm not opining on any of that. Just want to know if tech has improved to this point yet. And wonder if this could ever be a compromise solution between the extremes.

Thanks for the input I don't really expect to use it as a laptop replacement per se, I probably won't use it for any sort of documents. It will be almost strictly entertainment, games, web surfing, some light Skype video chatting with people back home, etc. Unfortunately, I'm becoming more convinced that my laptop would be too heavy to comfortably lug around - plus, if it got stolen or damaged, I'd be devastated.

Personally, I don't think this gets into the politics of it at all. Another guide or mod may disagree.

Technologically I do think it is possible, but by the same token think it would be just like any other technological control method in that it can be overridden. At the same time you have to remember Law Enforcement would need separate ones that aren't affected by that control so they aren't inhibited when responding to a situation.

There's numerous obstacles we face in finding the right answer to violence in this country. I won't get into any of it though as it would get political in a hurry. I will say this, there's no clear answer and not one single law by itself will fix it.

EDIT: Please take some time at some point today and read this out of respect to the victims. We will hear so much about the shooter, but this may be all we ever hear about the victims: http://usnews.nbcnews.com/_news/2012/12/15/15930533-victims-in-connecticut-shooting-daring-principal-fun-loving-teacher-6-year-old-twin-brother?lite

Okey dokey.

Understanding the outpouring of grief.

Just do us and yourself a favor, if the politics and laws aspects must be discussed, please write it up in Politics and Current Affairs subforum here. Thanks!

Tech discussions on guns are ok in the Lounge, but lots here petitioned mods to keep it out of the thread. Just reminding.

My new dentist is great! Best cleaning I have ever had. And they said for not having insurance for so long that I have kept very good care of my teeth. Aside from the two cavities I have, which I have always had bad luck with those.

This link of bios is slightly better, IMO. Extremely difficult to read without tearing up.

Was just watching some of Entertainment Live and while it's generally a really hokey show, the host had so much trouble keeping composure. While I don't have children, I feel for all those out there who do.
I've learned to be "city hardened", ignore comments spewed at me on the street. One quite surprising the other day!
Be courteous and kind to strangers, thank your bus driver, open doors for folks. I still believe karma comes back around and if not, your daily act of kindness goes straight to the heart anyway.

Amazing how this varies regionally. In LA and NYC, walking on the street, you don't look at the people walking towards you or say anything. In Canada (at least my small town), you look at them and say hi, to complete strangers often, maybe even have a short conversation.

It's sad, I know.
I always like to greet folks with a cheerful face and a hello whenever possible.
I work in the business of customer service and providing a great experience is very important. Do I get frustrated? Absolutely! But every time I see a smile on a customers face, it brings me joy.

After almost a year of use of my extended battery for my Nexus, I noticed it seemed to not hold a charge as well as it used to. Decided to swap back to my stock battery. Battery life increased.

<--- watching The Hobbit when it comes to my house in 3D Blu-Ray. Cheaper and lasts longer that way. Yeah, I'm frugal

OMG, my daughter has spent $2,305 at ThinkGeek since 2009 (we just tallied it up on the website) .

Now granted, many of them were presents and/or purchases for others (so my daughter could get the reward points), but that's still a lot of nerd items .

Good thing she gets paid for the occasional summer job while she's in college.
