The more I research, the more I'm coming to the sad realization that I have no choice but Verizon or AT&T here where I live. Tmobile has decent voice coverage but no data outside the main cities and we live out in the country.

*Waves Hi back Stigy!*

I'm standing on line with my daughter for a book signing by Gabrielle Douglas. Ann found out at 3 she was here and the salon that I fill in at told me to go so we were sure she would make it in time.

A little off topic, but here's a gut wrenching video of a 747 freighter crash a couple days ago. I didn't know the crew, but they were US pilots. Apparently a large cargo pallet broke loose and slid to the back of the airplane.

Some accidents, like the one in Buffalo a few years ago, could have been avoided by a better pilot. But this one, there was nothing anyone could have done.

Since Youtube is blocked at work & not sure if this is answered, but what effect does a large cargo pallet coming loose have on the plane.

Does it just make the tail end of the plane so heavy that it cannot stay up in the air? I didn't realize that the plane had to be packed a certain to fly consistently.

Ron, I saw that this morning on the news. Wow!
Nearly looked like it stopped mid air and then just nose dived. Did the engines break or something?

Stigy,

Having the correct weight and balance load is more important than having enough fuel on board. Remember teeter-totters? If you had two kids of different weight you could still use it, but the heavy kid would have to sit closer to the middle to balance it out. In this case, the heavier kid basically slid to the end and the plane went out of balance.

Dread,

With the weight shift the nose went straight up. He quickly ran out of airspeed and the wing stalled (not enough airflow over the wind to generate lift) so then he plummeted to the earth. I normally hate when media uses the word plummet with airplanes because they rarely do. In this case, it did.

That's incredible. Would you think the cargo wasn't placed correctly, or not tied down right?
I remember my brother took a super short flight on a small plane and the pilot asked the passengers weights so he could seat them correctly.

I don't know which of the problems caused the crash. It may have been placed incorrectly to begin with.

Sorry for the loss of that crew and condolences to their families, friends and co-workers.

Cap, many thanks for the update and explanations, I'm sure that this affects you, so double thanks.

That we fly so much doesn’t make it any less of a miracle.

Yeah I've been following this story as well. The pilot was doing his best to save it, even managed to get the plane attitude to somewhat normal prior to impact. It's sad, one crew member had two kids and another on the way. Only blessing, impact looked too severe to remain conscious.

Horrible. Didn't even hear about it till just now! However, in engineering, we're always taught, accidents can always be avoided. In this case, it sounds like improper load securing or inspection of the anchors. Nothing the pilot could have done, but could have been prevented.

Here's a good short explanation. Just ignore the part about the engines stalling. It's a common misconception among many that when they hear of an airplane stall they assume it's an engine stall like on a car. It was the wings that stalled, not the engines.

I'm curious too. We're going to be using the Surface Pro tablet in out cockpits using Windows 8. (I would have been happy with either Android or iOS, but they picked an unproven Windoze product!?)

Anyway, I'm trying to keep an open mind...

They probably picked Win8 tabs since there's no games for them to distract you while flying.

I've read so many things about how people don't really like it. As for me? It took me about 5 minutes to figure it out. I really don't have a problem with it. I've only spent about 10 minutes playing around with it though.

The pic was suppose to be demonstrating "biting my tongue" to show my mature restraint, but sticking it out works for my not quite mature side too.

Ugh, I swear my kid would forget her head if it wasn't attached. Got the book signed by Gabby Douglas yesterday and has already misplaced it. She is currently trying to hunt down a custodian at the school to see if she is allowed in the after school program room to check there.

I read this out of context. At first, had no idea what you were referring to. I may have to step in for the "old" Cap'n Ron because it does seem like an open invitation...

S4 bootloader is unlocked. The guy that did it is waiting for the Verizon S4 to be released so that Samsung and Verizon aren't able to patch it before they release it and to make sure the process works on the Verizon S4.

We watched IM1 last night.

Spoiling Iron Man seems easy:

Good morning and it's our second day of {semi} empty nest freedom! We've spent 3 days making our son's trailer habitable and up to livable standards from what it was. His 20-month IT course has been crunched down to 12 months - probably budget cuts or some garbage - and it's going to be an intense school. But he'll settle in nicely.

Maybe after today we'll be done with his trailer and we can actually enjoy ourselves, being all alone in this nice quiet house for the first time in decades!
