Hey friends, I have a couple questions for you:

- Anyone know the easiest way to get all my apps to my new replacement phone? Could I make a nandroid and TiBu backup of my current ROM/apps and then simply move the files to my new phone and have them work (once I've installed the same ROM, of course)?

- Is there a way to tell if my new phone is a new or refurbished model?

Yeah, TiBu, Nandroid, Move files, then Move Files Back, and Nandroid.

I know there is a way to find out if the phone is new or refurbished but I can't remember.

Does it have something to do with the IMEI number? That's ringing a bell in my head for some reason. I think I remember this from the pre-release thread when were all trying to find the build dates of our phones.

On the gnex I think you just dial *#*#786#*#* and check the recondition status, if I remember correctly.

I think a lot of times when a show ends the writers end up doing stuff no one likes. As for The Office? The atas a great way to end the show. I'm gonna miss it..

Got updated too. Just curious. Hangouts being part of g+ you need to have a g+ account for the new app, right?

Perfect series ending for The Office last night. Very funny but also several moments where you get a little choked up as a fan. The hour long behind the scenes and interviews before the show was great too. Pretty cool insights on how the cast was picked, footage from auditions, etc.

Has anyone successfully installed it running JBSourcery? It's not playing nice with mine.

Also, may I ask why you are so opposed Early?

I don't use Google+ and I was an early adopter (beta user) for it. I've grown to hate it.

Google Talk used the XMPP protocol and I've been able to connect to anyone anywhere using Gtalk for text on any platform using any handy Jabber client.

Over the years, for work, personal use and the forums, I've set up individual accounts and Gtalk/jabber with the contacts that I already have.

Practically none of whom are in my Google+ circles and many of whom don't connect via Gtalk - XMPP is a standard protocol.

From what I've read, Hangouts means that XMPP support is going away and I need to embrace g+ again to get access to those people - and lose my client integrations built over the years in the process.

So now, instead of having one jabber client for my contacts - I'll need another one, not jabber, Hangouts, for my gmail-based contacts.

And I already maintain them for Skype and Yahoo and MSN and iChat.

Last thing I need is to lose capability and add another client while being told that this is really great and more convenient for me.

PS - with jabber/Gtalk, I can maintain multiple live chat accounts on my desktop - but not with the Google client. No, Google knows that on a desktop there is no way that I could possibly be using multiple Gmail accounts at the same time.

Running JBSourcery beta and I have Hangouts running.

I searched for Hangouts in the Play Store and it installed over overwrote my Talk application.

Interesting setup you have there. Much too complicated for me, lol. I guess I'm just not THAT involved in these messaging services to realize what these changes mean for some. That does sound like it'd be a thorn in your side though.

Hmmm...I'm running JBSourcery 5.2. When I go to the web link or the phone Play Store it says it's already installed, but it's not. No update link showing up for me in Play Store.

My Play updates told me I have it today - I'm not updating until I have to though.

Would a program like Adium or Trillium help you consolidate? Just a thought.

Well, this being the first full school year my app has been around, this is the first time this has really happened. People are uninstalling it apparently because it's the end of the school year. I lost 100 active installs of my 5700 over the last couple of weeks. Wouldn't think people would uninstall it just because the school year ended. I typically leave apps on my phone if I think I'll use it even 6 months later. Maybe they'll add it back in August.

Oh absolutely!

On my phone I use imo messenger - I can send picture files with it.

And thanks to having added US phone numbers as buddies through the AIM portal on iChat, I can SMS anyone in my contacts for no charge.

Yeah - also a "new" feature to Hangouts, to which I say big deal.

I have to maintain the actual Skype client on my desktop. I use it to transfer complete iso images and for videochat. And occasionally have to fire up the others for special needs.

But over time, I've been convincing my contacts to go with Skype or Gtalk because of a) platform independence, b) jabber access for Gtalk, c) videochat on Skype.

Last time Skype videochat worked with Android, was 2010 when it was integrated into Fring.

Skype cleverly stopped that access saying that Fring might not do it right and would therefore reflect on Skype. After which, they tried to monetize it as a Verizon-only service.

To this day since, I've not had Skype mobile videochatting work - I mean - work.

Now - if you go get a new Skype account you're immediately confronted with the fact that Microsoft owns them. You will be forced to get a Microsoft account whether you want one or not. No option whatsoever against that now.

And now - with Google leaving XMPP, I'm back to the specialized client game if I want to play with them.

The only new thing in Hangouts is the group video chatting.

I'm waiting for that to be embraced. I've been pretty well made fun of for supporting a "useless" and "vain" feature since 2010 here on that.

Everything else - group messaging, videochatting, platform independence, sending SMS from your phone or desktop for free, interoperability with Apple platforms, has all already existed.

How did the camel get into the tent?

He stuck his nose in first.

Hangouts does everything that Apples and Blackberries have done before and is clearly showing they can do it better.

But Apple and Blackberry are walled gardens. It's what we've made fun of.

Mark my words - Hangouts is the beginning of our walled garden.

Even the name is social.

A slap in the face to corporate communicators everywhere.

And it's going to go big like gangbusters and be really, really loved.

Except by those of us who know what we're losing.

I am also one who will embrace the new messenger or hangouts because its just very connected with all the services I already use.

Anyone else jump on the Google Play All Access? At $8 a month for everything, I couldn't pass it up

As far as Skype for Android goes, I don't understand your statement EM that it doesn't work with Android. I Skype my kids all the time with it.

And yes, I foresee the Android environment closing into the Google Garden eventually. They HAVE to. It's just the nature of the business model. But I think it will be a great garden to play in!

I have the trial going right now - so far its awesome. Still some bugs to be worked out, but at $7.99 it'll be like Netflix. Probably won't even notice it on the CC bill.

Anyway, I am heading home work work and I won't be on til next week. Staying off anything but IG and Twitter for the vacation.

The video quality on Skype, from three different Androids and two different iPhones has not been acceptable on any wifi network I've tried.

It's fine on my desktop and used to be better than what I get on a laptop now back with Fring / Skype on the 2010 Evo. Using 3G on Sprint!

As for the walled garden being necessary?

Closed systems, legacy abandonment to lock out others and the requirement that I accept unrelated services that I hate is indeed a business model.

A once-popular one.

Did I just describe Apple or Google?

Apple used to provide far more than they do now. They stopped as soon as people became dependent fans.

As far as Google _having_ to be like Apple when it's been the opposite business model that has Android alone out-earning Apple's app store for over a year now and as far as any walled garden being enjoyable in any way, at any time, and for any reason, I think that you and I are going to have to agree to disagree.

Love space stuff. Anyone hear of that company that wants to send people to Mars with the possibility of never coming back? I would go in heartbeat.

Well, I was being cautiously optimistic, Early. You and I agree that Android is successful because it IS open... and I join you in hoping that it STAYS that way.

Yeah, I mentioned yesterday that I was seething over it.

I probably ought not post much when I get that way.

Ok, here's my penance.

So, my daughter upgraded her DX to an iPhone 4s, and my granddaughter, another proud DX owner until it got bathed and dropped, just earned herself an iPhone 4 replacement (can't beat free upgrades).

And they showed them to me. My first question? How's your coverage? My last question - How's your coverage?

My granddaughter and I have discussed the various iOS/Android differences, it's fascinated her.

The night she got her new iPhone (just the other day in fact) - we were watching the TV and this came on:

I howled like a monkey.

Speaking of commercials, anyone seen this one?

Don’t get Scroogled by the Google app store

Saw this and a few others on TV recently, got pretty steamed up, to be honest. Pretty underhanded tactics by Microsoft. Smear and fear seem to be their MO now.
