India wants to name the next version of Android... lassi — a thick, yogurt-based drink popular in southeast Asia.

Quote:
A group from IIT Kharagpur has written an open letter to Google’s Sundar Pichai, arguing that India’s consumer support of the Android operating system warrants the use of a name familiar with locals. They are also hoping to appeal to Pichai on a personal level. He is a graduate of IIT Kharagpur.

Mango lassis are okay, just crazy sweet. Got a savory lassi once and it was disgusting.

So Droid-Life has the story on the DNA update that Verizon has published a coming soon page for. DL calls it 4.2 but I believe this will be 4.3, as the US President of HTC started the DNA would get it by end of September. Now I know most of you have been running a 4.3 ROM for a while, but what does it say that the first phone with 4.3 on Verizon isn't the GNex, or the Moto X? I gotta give some major props to HTC I think.

Any phone running 4.3 on Verizon will be a huge deal because than the data connectivity will be 10000000x better in custom ROMs because the APN application that Verizon uses will be updated to work (hopefully better) with 4.3 ROMs.

Believe it when you see it, Anti.
But have to say, I'm not surprised about the Moto X and Gnex being left behind.

I'm on a custom 4.3 ROM and can't say I notice a huge difference with connectivity. Care to elaborate?

I have my doubts that it really has a fair chance of winning. One of the official reasons they went with kit kat over key lime pie is because klp is a regional dessert without much global knowledge of it. If they went with lassi, it would be the same problem.

As far as the gnex goes, it's hit it's 18 months and been eol'd, so I think Verizon has abandoned it.

This post is from baldwinguy (of the "Shiny" ROM):

Quote:
I'm sure that most everyone knows, Android 4.3 has brought with it some serious problems with 3G data on toro. Through research, I've found that there are actually 3G and MMS problems happening with several devices that updated to Android 4.3, including the Nexus 4 and Galaxy Nexus "maguro". It seems like a lot of this is related to each device's APNs. I've heard some success stories from N4 and GNex "maguro" users who have removed certain APNs and reset them to a given value. Now, most carriers allow APNs to be changed manually. On Android, this happens in the Settings menu under the advanced networking settings. Verizon doesn't allow APNs to be manually changed like this, and instead we have VZWAPNLib.apk and VZWAPNService.apk in the proprietary files. I don't know exactly how these work, but I assume they handle the APNs at all times (in addition to apns-conf.xml, which all devices have, but that's just where APNs are read from). I don't think we will have a permanent, 100% fix until a VZW device is updated to 4.3 and we get updated APN apps. I believe the apns-conf.xml styling and format was updated in 4.3, and that's why I think this release isn't working well with the old VZW APN apps.

That being said, I think this latest build has definitely improved 4G->3G handoff and switching, at least for some users in testing. Another thing to consider is that in Android 4.3, the APN failure refresh rate was bumped up from 5 seconds to 20 seconds to prevent battery drain. So if your device loses 4G and is attempting to find 3G, it may be without data for up to 20 seconds before it starts working. If this outage lasts for a minute or more, there's a good chance that the handoff failed altogether as it has been since 4.3 debuted.

I hope that explanation helps to relieve some confusion, and I hope this build helps with the problem at least a little bit. Thanks for the continued support and for understanding and bearing with me!

Lol, while that's the official line from Google, instead it all had to do with money.

Guarantee it.

What a tragedy. Never had key lime pie. I wish I could send you some, but I fear that it would not be very palatable after the trip

Folks, this week has just flat worn me out and it's not over. Full plate again tomorrow, starting with a 9 AM meeting and ending with a 6 PM dinner meeting. I hope your weekend is actually the end of your week!

Hi BBK! Great to see you too! With all the new phone releases it's been busy around here - and admittedly a bit mundane with BB and Capt away... but we missed you and it's great to have you back online!

Are you having issues too?
It worked fine, and then all of a sudden (a day after flash), it's broken. Reflashed the SUFix.zip file and no help.

Well, its a couple more steps than just 1 click.

Install LG drivers
Make sure phone is connected through adb
Set up phone settings and USB debugging
Install Chinese 1 click root and figure out what to click (unless you read Chinese)
Phone reboots
Install English superuser from play store and grant root access.
Freeze Chinese superuser with Titanium.
Run Superuser again, and reboot.
Remove Chinese superuser
Profit?

Took about 15 minutes start to finish. Most of that was in stalling the drivers and figuring out that I had an old version of adb.

I've seen I think 3 (at least 2) different ones in the past week or so.

They're pretty funny, and I'm glad to see the device getting the marketing weight it should get.

Curious to see if they'll go back to a non brand name dessert/candy for L.

Looking to root/ROM it or run with stock for a bit?

How do you count days down when you don't know how many there are? Tough to do when Verizon keeps messing with the date...

I have every intention of staying stock. What will I run? Vanilla Android? Done that for 4 years now. I guess I'll try the stock software for awhile

@bread, had some issues with 4.3 and root, but not for a few weeks. Just hate how Google changed how and when root can be had.

Which one? 4.3 or Google dictating root?

WHEW! Church this morning and then I'm OFF the rest of the day!
Unless I get 1,000 phone calls and emails, of course... so much for retirement!

So MAYBE - just MAYBE I can spend time with my favorite online family here at AF. I'll pop around doing some Mod stuff, but mostly I'll be here (I have 8 AF tabs open at the same time). Have a great rest of the weekend!

In 4.3, root has to run at "daemon" during boot or something of that nature. So it's implementation is fragile and more challenging for devs. This is why it is easier to break root in 4.3.

Google is responsible.

That is my understanding.

Just reinforces my opinion that the era of rooting & ROMming is quickly coming to an end. Android is maturing, carriers make a fortune on bloatware, and lose a fortune in warranty work from folks who root their phones and then brick them. As much as none of us want rooting and ROMming to go away, we're on the wrong side of history, I fear... and ROMs will soon be relics of days gone by.

Google implemented important security features in 4.3 - done to protect us, not break root -

https://viaforensics.com/mobile-security/android-4-3-thoughts-insights-pof-pau-oliva.html

Chainfire addressed this. Here's his exploratory effort for the leaked Samsung S4 back in June -

https://plus.google.com/app/basic/stream/z12rw1urfveawxfxm04cjl1aoor5ezninhc

Here's the current SuperSU thread -

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1538053

Proper root requires an unlocked bootloader. You can get that fully with a Nexus, and mostly with services provided by HTC or Motorola provided your carrier hasn't blocked it.

Everyone else is at the mercy of exploiting security holes to get root and the battle cry for those so affected is, once you get root never take an operating system OTA because you may lose root, either for quite a while or for good.

And what does common sense say about Android security if the accepted action for gaining root on many devices involves exploiting a security hole?

Exactly!

Google's updates make sense in my book.

And installing the latest SuperSU fixed the minor issues I experienced on 4.3.

Don't be afraid of the word daemon, it's a fundamental concept for *nix since the cave days.

So long as Android is based on Linux there must be root, that's the name of the administrator.

So long as Linux and Android continue to evolve, the privileged processes that dictate the users' perspective of root will evolve as well.

I'm going to respectfully disagree with The Chief - my opinion is that rooting and romming for us is like rock and roll:

It will never die. It was meant to be that way, yes I can say why. I don't care what people say, root and roms are here to stay.

Sha Na Na wouldn't lie.

Way late to post this but I have to ask, in the lollipops video did anyone read along? I have been wondering about the line about half way through mentioning lollipop flavors of HUCKLEBERRY CHEERY AND RYE. Odd flavors that would give jelly belly a run for its money.

@Chief: When Early speaks, we are, often all wrong...

@Early: I have not a misunderstanding as to the whys behind root being more fragile/finicky. I'm happy for the security changes and am subscribed to Chainfire's XDA thread to keep informed.

However, thought I'd let you bore the WHers with the fine print of it all instead me...

Good job old chap...you fell right into my nerd trap...

And now I will await the noodle of shame...

Where's BB and Cap't Ron when you need them?

Somewhere in the Note 3 Forum:

Did it seem large at first? No doubt. Does that feeling go away in a week's time? Yes. And the joy you'll feel of all its beauty will supersede any concerns you have over the size.

Yeah I got served... TWICE in one day! And at my age!

But I know enough to defer to the expert, Halon

EDIT: I almost forgot...

The Darling Bride & I got these at the local Chinese Restaurant several days ago, and I'm giving everyone fair notice right now: on December 6th, phones and computers will be OFF! Leave a message!

I don't know what phone to go with? The S4 keeps popping up in my head but it has SO MUCH stuff added to it. I thought of going back to HTC even though I said I would never would again...only because of the speakers. So I guess that is not a reason to go back? The Note 3? It is SO BIG! But tempting. The X? I do want it. I wan't the Developer Edition though. They said coming soon. Their interpretation of coming soon is different than mine, I guess? And I don't want to wait till November for 32gb. I'm pretty sure I could live with 16gb. And I'm still deciding on Edge Max.

Too much thinking. Brain hurt
