I have attended 2 launch day events (OG Droid, Gnex) and I was like the only one there. I felt like fighting myself just to make news or something. But you just don't see that level of enthusiasm - desperation? - coming from Android folks.

Are we that geeky and boring? It can't be that there are fewer of us, not with as many activations as Android has...

EDIT: DOH!

And how many millions are fighting to download and install this thing?

As much as I have bashed the G2 for those back buttons, the past couple of days I've been considering getting it. I don't understand myself sometimes..

Chief, we got our Droids I think a couple days after it was released (Thursday, we got them on Saturday). Got my Bionic and Gnex on release. Funny part with the Gnex was there was one other guy waiting with me at RadioShack, and what do you know, they only had two in stock!

Bread, I remember the date fondly: November 6th, 2009. Launch Day and I was at the Verizon store when it opened, retiring my LG Dare for this amazing new thing called an "Android smartphone". Then the Gnex that FINALLY released December 15th 2011. Again, sitting outside the Verizon store door at 8:40 AM, waiting to be the first person in my rural area to have one. (Turns out that wasn't difficult!)

This is my first pre-order. So I know it will come to ME. What's next? I guess I can't pop my microSIM in it because the Note 3 takes nanoSIMs.

So will I either have to go into the Verizon store anyway for activation or call them? And does anyone know of an app that transfers app DATA from one device to another?

I went from a WinMo smartphone (some HTC/Verizon one; resistive touchscreen and all! ), wife from an LG Chocolate.
Just looked up my join date, Nov 8th, 2009. Remember searching for a forum about Android since I knew nothing about it and stumbled upon this great one.

Chief, you can cut the SIM down if you want, but you may want to go to a CORPORATE store. Any third party retailer won't give you a new SIM. When I swapped my Gnex for S3, I just popped it in and was good to go. Verizon's website immediately knows you've changed devices and shows it up properly.
When I gave my Gnex to my wife from her Bionic, we had to get a new SIM, micro, to swap from her regular sized one.
The tools are cheap if you want to do it yourself:

The Germans I believe came out with a case for the Note that had buttons on the back. If I'm not mistaken, it even had a track pad. Everyone raved about it.

Good Morning my WH friends,
Been absent of late due to RL, all good, just busy . So Hello Watering Hole ! Our little Nexie is really starting to struggle. I thought that if i bought a new battery and changed roms i could keep her snappy, but alas, she frustrates me almost daily. Soooooo, on to something new. I was looking at the Moto X, LG G2 and the Note 3. I think i have ruled out the Note 3 as just a bit bigger than i want to carry. Chief, you bout had me talked into the Moto X, then right back out of it, lol. I am leaning towards the G2 and actually kind of like the rear buttons (to this day i dislike Nexie's button placement). Here is my question, if I follow yall correctly: I can go into the store and use my husbands line upgrade ( he uses a waterproof, shockproof casio dumb phone and wants nothing to do with a smart phone ) I can get the G2 at the subsidized rate and then transfer the my number to it. How does that work? I mean his line does not have data, will they just let me transfer the upgrade and keep the unlimited or do i have to go through the motions, add his line to the LG, add data to his line, then transfer my number to his, transfer his number back to the dumb phone and then drop the data? I don't want to mess this up. Thanks!

Copa, I have high regard for you and do not wish to steer you wrong.

While there are G2 adherents out there, a great many of them are pulling their hair out over the magnificent specs and absolutely horrible user experience. I cite as an example:

LG G2 Review: A Braindead Hercules

Meanwhile, the Moto X has far exceeded the expectations of everyone not chasing specs. It's small in hand, lightweight and does amazing stuff. I would steer you to that 10 times before I recommend a G2 for you... UNLESS you plan to immediately root and ROM whatever phone you get. Then the G2 is fine (subject to ROM availability). It all comes down to what YOU plan to do with the phone. As a happy user, I don't think you can go wrong with the X. Personally, I just needed the "more" that the Note 3 offered.

I can't tell you anything about swapping phones and lines: that's someone else's domain, as I have unlimited on all 4 of our lines. Hope this helps

Kellen from DL seemed to love the G2. Custom recovery (and therein root) is already available for it. Most have said it just takes some time to get used to the button arrangement. It's not a phone I'd buy, but I'd probably put it a little higher than the Moto X, IMHO.

Chief, I do appreciate your input, I most likely will root and rom. When I looked at the Moto X in store compared to the G2, the G2 seemed faster and brighter. I use my phone more outside than inside, so seeing the screen in sunlight is huge. I do however prefer Moto's radios for those areas with weaker signals. I read the review you reference, he hates the phone. Thanks Dread, I think the button placement is totally personal choice. Kellex does seem to like the phone. Halon, I did read Droid Life's article, i just wondered if any of my trusted WH friends had tried and been successful, but thanks for the link!

Wow Chief, that's a bit over the top. I'm certainly not going to turn this into a fanboi contest.

There are a myriad of 20 page in depth reviews on the G2, some raving about it, some are on the fence. But overall, the general feeling is that its one of the best devices out there. It may not be for everyone depending on your needs, but its definitely a viable flagship.

Then comes along a few paragraphs from Gizmodo, well after launch, and now it suddenly is a piece of crap. The Gizmodo article is written from the point of an amateurish reviewer, who obviously spent very little time with this phone. Starts off saying it looks exactly like an S4, then says no capacitive buttons (like the S4 has). So which is it. Yes, it looks like a S4 in the fact its a rectangular black slab, just like most every phone out there.

The comparisons and feature bloat to Samsung Touchwiz are way off. The Notification shade being clogged up is true, but dipsh|t reviewer didn't mention you can shut it all off. Talk about super biased and obviously he spent 10 minutes, probably playing with it at a store rather than a review sample. The late timing indicates that LG didn't provide an early review sample, and this bashing is more revenge sour grapes than actual fact. There was basically not a single unbiased point in that entire article. Batter life as so-so? How about it blowing the charts off at Anandtech with a 24 hour TALK time? Not even the Maxx gets close.

For real counterpoints, I present exhibit A. Han Solo, who is notoriously finicky. Let's see what he's said. Things like "this is turning into the Nexus 5" and the "stock software is pretty good".

The idea that this phone needs a ROM to work is pure BS. I'm actually very happy with stock, and may not even go down a ROM road. Its good to know that its there for the future, and the verdict is out with LG and Verizon software updates, but as of now no need. I did want root to install backed up app data and freeze bloat. Unfortunately, bloat is a reality on anything not Nexus.

I could also direct to poorly written reviews of the Moto X that bash it, but it would be obvious they were written uninformed, so why bother. But I'd like to see where people are tearing their hair out over the software. I don't see that on here or XDA.

So the facts are the G2 is one of the fastests phones in existance. It has one of the biggest, nicest screens in a package that is reasonable. It has far and away the best battery life. One of the best cameras, and as a whole the best phone I've ever used.

But what works for me doesn't work for everyone. So I encourage everyone to educate themselves and read as many reviews as possible. Then go try one out.

Yes, some don't like the back buttons. Myself, I have no issue with them. And yes, knock-knock sometimes doesn't work on the first try (I'd say 80% to turn on, 100% to turn off). But those are so minor to me. For others, perhaps those are deal breakers.

But linking to an obvious biased review (can you call it a review?) And not recommending it because of said review is a disservice.

Welcome back Copacetic

I remembered these two posts and thought I'd save you the read back...

Cheapest place at the moment is probably Verizon at $599. That's what I had to do. I could never do 2 GB or even 6 GB per month. I'm already at 12 GB and it's 3 days into my cycle.

However, I'm thinking about unrooting it, returning it to Verizon, paying an extra $100 to buy it at Best Buy for $699, rooting it, enjoy it, then when the Note 3 comes out, if it blows me away, unroot G2, return it, get my $699 back, go to Verizon, and buy the Note 3.

My wife says it's borderline money laundering, but I do it all the time. I've got "elite" status at Best Buy Reward Zone, so I have 45 days to return.

From all appearances, the Nexus 5 won't be offered on Verizon. I still burn a candle for it, but probably not going to happen. Especially if the suspected FCC report is indeed the Nexus 5. It's entirely possible that there may be a different Verizon based model number for the Nexus 5 (just like our Galaxy Nexus), but I doubt it.

If it wasn't for unlimited data, I'd probably jump ship. But not doing that now. The G2 is basically a Nexus 5 anyway, although I think in final form the G2 will have better overall hardware specs. Google may cheap out in some areas to keep costs down, which is admirable, but I think they should offer a true flagship, not a watered down version.

The GNex had a good run, and it was my favorite phone for a while, but the G2 is pretty frickn sweet. Best screen, best camera, best battery life I've ever seen on a phone. I've been unplugged for 4 hours and still at 100% battery. It's nice that at the end of the day you still have 75% and estimated time remaining is 70hrs! Obviously that's light use, but this phone will last. A super bright screen that you can actually see outside, plus it is 5.2" in a form factor that's not bigger than the SGS4 (or GNex for that matter). Note 3 will have a bigger screen, but in a package that's a lot bigger as well.

Only complaint some have are the back buttons. Honestly, I don't even use them. I thought the knock-knock turn on/off feature was stupid, but in reality it's great. Just a quick double tap and the phone turns on.
Ninja'd lol.

Had a pleasent conversation on Verizon about unlimited and Edge(Max) and VoLTE.

Still deciding. Will they take away unlimited? Could they end the offering of the 6GB and 8GB for unlimited people? Should I just buy full price thinking they will never get rid of unlimited even when VoLTE comes into play?

It is like a high stakes game of poker. Last hand. Deciding if I want one or two cards. Are they bluffing...

@NJ02vette: I was simply illustrating the worst case for Copacetic. You happen to be one of the happy adherents I spoke of. But if she's going to root & ROM, then the G2 would be an excellent choice of phone: again, hoping the development community gets hot on writing ROMs for it. Having watched the streaming reveal, though, I decided against it. So I thought that mine was a balanced statement.

@Halon: At some point they will do away with unlimited data, but I really don't think it's imminent. Maybe once all unlimited accounts are month to month (next year or 2015) they will pull the trigger and force all remaining unlimited accounts into a tiered plan. Hopefully T-Mobile, Sprint or another LTE carrier will have solidly expanded into my area by then.

Chief, do you think VoLTE will be the demise of unlimited data?
I'm just trying to decide if buying outright to save my unlimited is worth it at this point. But, I guess there's just no way I'd pay $600+ for a new phone.

There are people that think VoLTE will pave the way for the ending of unlimited. Then again, they also thought that when 4G was about to start up.

@Bread:

Probably. As more and more people rely on the cloud and data streaming, the more money Verizon is NOT making on the unlimited accounts in data overages (which I suspect they're counting on). VoLTE will only increase data consumption... leaving Big Red free to pull the plug.

Yeah, we could throw a fit and threaten to move to T-MO or another carrier with unlimited data, but we're pretty much a sparse minority at this point and Verizon could easily absorb that loss. So that's not going to be an effective bluff.

$600-700 is a lot to pay for a phone. I would counter that this is far more than a phone: it's a computer that fits in your pocket and happens to also make phone calls. From that perspective, it's a pretty good deal. That's why I send $x a month into our set-aside phone account, just to pay full retail every two years (or so).

I could argue, Bread, that you're already paying that much for a phone, just in monthly installments in your plan. You could argue that by paying full retail, I'm effectively paying for two phones while only owning one. And we'd both be right: the advantage, however, would go to the ol' Chief, who will retain unlimited until they snatch it from his clutched hands, while you subsidize your phone and go on a tiered data plan.

Provided me with unlimited LTE data for $9.95 a month per line on four lines. They have at least honored THAT, for 3-1/2 years now and still counting.

Wow, this has sparked a good conversation. So, I went into the local verizon store today and profiled, yes i said profiled, lol, the salespeople. I picked the guy that I believed was most likely to understand and be willing to do what i wanted to do and voila...used Hubby's upgrade for a new phone then transferred my number to it and put his number back on his dumb one. Their system did make us activate his number on the phone, albeit for just a moment. He did inform me that Verizon has issued some sort of internal about people who are trying to add a line then do the switch in order to keep their unlimited, guess this is a no no. That being said, it is no issue to do what I did. However, I did ask that if when my phone is do for an upgrade could I transfer to hubby to do essentially the same thing and he said no. That even transferring the upgrade on an unlimited line will loose the unlimited. Hope this helps! And for which phone I went with, see my next post....

And the winner is...LG G2. So i did some more reading and really looked at the software of the LG skin. I have to agree with NJ02Vette. This phone is very sweet! A lot of the skin is why i have chosen a rom in the past and many of the customization are similar to the mods i was flashing on Nexie. Granted, I just picked it up and got home with it so I have some setting up to do, but so far, I think I am in love with my phone again. I am looking forward to putting it through the paces and really using it in the next few days. Thank you for everyone's opinion, it does help to "talk" these things out with each other. FWIW, I love the back buttons already. The G2 feels perfect in the hand and other than the habit of where the buttons were on the Nexie, this is more intuitive to me. I will report more later. Thanks again! Copa...

Chief, you've certainly been fair. I just took exeception to the comment that there were people pulling their hair out over the software. Simply not true. Other than quick writeups that didn't go in depth, there's not too many complaints with the software skin and enhancements. And many comment that the stock launcher is one of the best they even used.

It was more a reaction to a piss poor biased writeup. Not every phone is right for everyone else, that's what's great about the Android ecosystem.

Or we could all be fighting over a quasi-gold colored phone that looks the same as the one from a year ago.

Eh, I wouldn't say that. If I had the funds, I would love to get my hands on one right now. Oh well. :/

Oh. Ok. I just noticed that y'all seemed to be focused on the newly released phones and wondered. I have been participating in my company's health incentive all year and at the end of it I will get a bonus of $400 which comes to me next month. Yea! So that is my phone fund. Thank goodness as my poor nexus is beginning to beg for mercy. The screen burn in alone is driving me crazy. I want a phone that won't do that next go around.

LCDs can't suffer that by design, AMOLEDs may. Something to keep in mind if you want a guarantee on that.

I know. That's one of the things I have been dithering over about my next phone choice. But I really do want an external sd slot this time and that is hard to find.

Yeah, it's a trend that seems to be winding down. The only big manufacturer's to include a slot on their latest flagships are Samsung, Sony, and Asus. Not sure if some of the smaller or less popular ones like ZTE or Hauwei are still using them though. Being on Verizon, that leaves you with only Samsung and the S4 or Note III for 2013 devices.

Good Morning AF friends. So naturally, i played heavily with the G2 yesterday and after about 6 hours of on screen time, i still had 45 percent battery left (and i started at 90%). I have been off the charger now for about an hour with constant use and show a 2 percent battery drop. My Nexie would be down by at least 20 percent by now and never would have given me 6 hours of screen time without a charge. So the battery life on this thing is a true delight. The double tap to turn on the screen has been flawless and very convenient. All phones should do this! The LG software is actually very good. I used Nova Launcher always before and have pretty much replicated my Nexie with the stock launcher on the G2, so no need for me to have a different launcher loaded. As to Q slide, i disabled that as i did not find the little slides useful and their presence as a toggle in the pull down was too busy. The ability to access three apps with three fingers quickly is definitely nifty, but so far, i haven't figured out if i can use them in a split window. If not, the recent apps button basically does the same for me, albeit potentially more cumbersome with apps. As to the recent apps, long press the home button and wallah, its right there. LG removed it as a navigation button but the function does still exist. As i said yesterday, while this is LG's skin, it does remind me of a custom rom with tons of options to customize. Not as many as we saw in Sourcery (but seriously, I only used a handful of them) but most of the ones that I became accustomed to. I do miss the ability to program a Nav button to go directly to voice search with google. LG has its own voice search but i have yet to try it. Yes there is a lot of bloatware, between LG's stuff and Verizon's, plenty to irritate. Today i will see how the gps works and a better test on the signal as we will be out and about. So far, the call quality and the sound has been great, better than our Nexie. Signal strength is better everywhere and hand off has been flawless. And of great importance to me, no lag. No waiting for the screen to come on, no frozen screen nothing. Just fast and smooth. I remember thinking the same when Ii went from the Droid X to the Nexie, wonder what we will be saying 2 years from now. lol. I will pop in later with a rundown on the camera and gps. Have a great Sunday!

Good morning Copacetic and I am pleasantly surprised to hear that you LIKE the G2's software! I can admit that in some rare cases I can be wrong (well, less than 100% right, anyway)... and this is one of them

Sounds like you've successfully re-assigned your Nexie to the status of emergency standby reserve phone: I so look forward to doing the same to my beloved Ginny, who has recently taken to giving me more and more hints that it's past time for her to retire.

There are unofficial reports out there that Verizon will be shipping the Note 3 on 9/29, so I have lots of digits crossed that I'll have mine in hand long before October 10th. I already have my 64 GB microSD card and just ordered my S-view flip cover and flexible glass screen protector. Ready for this bad thing to get here!

Good morning everyone else and have a great Sunday!

Not, but it comes highly recommended and I find it very impressive. Twice as thick as a human hair and still all that! And it's available for the G2

Sorry, just have never used a screen protector for about 4 years and have never incurred a scratch. Screens these days are quite good at resisting scratches, but if it puts your mind at ease, go for it.

I imagine WP would have the few apps I use, and looking at the leaked details of this phone, it's something worth considering. Screen, camera, body, all looks pretty awesome.

My thoughts exactly.

I never used a Windows phone and I don't know anyone that has one.

In other news...purchased a Sony Soundbar today at BestBuy and they price matched Amazon. I saved $60. Hooking it up was easy and I threw in Bill&Ted, sounds great.

If/when I have a house I will go full surround sound.

I got a Yamaha system on sale at Best Buy a year ago to replace our cheapo Insignia one. It's pretty amazing and especially for our small apartment. We can crank it up WAY too high for our space.
I believe it's this model. Pretty good for the price.

I had an HTiB years ago. It was nice. Living in an apartment I have nowhere to hide all the wires. But if I get a house I want to build my own starting with the receiver.

Not sure what to say about the Steelers at this point? Smh..

The bittersweet part is that the Bears defense got me 25pts for fantasy football.

Hey everyone. Hope you all had a good weekend! Congrats on the new phone, Copacetic!
