Google has finally commented on the barges. All they say is that they are high end show rooms for people to learn about new tech.

An ethical conundrum:

I have owned a total of three 2014 Note 10.1 tablets; 2 of them were returned (one because I didn't like the color and one because I bought the Air. The third is what I am presently using). They each came with "perks" including $25 worth of Google Play credits.

Should I use all of these credits? Or should I only use one set?

What do you all think?

No lte Nexus 7 on Verizon for a while. Certification process is on hold until Nexus 7 KitKat update. Then it starts again.

Do they seriously have to recertify every device every upgrade?

It's not my main phone, just a backup I use for streaming music at work. Seems to have picked up speed a little bit. The swype left for Google Now is nice. Don't know if it's the ROM but lockscreen widgets seem to be gone.
Really dig the wallpapers though.

I guess, but apparent the Nexus 7 on 4.3 wouldn't pass the certification. I wonder if that's what the 4.3.1 update was suppose to fix?

Hmm, Google search is getting weird on 4.4. Keep getting black screens when it searches:

I think there's some sort of fix, but looking for it now.

I did, actually. It's got a LOT of free RAM, but it's not ready for daily driver status. I tried slimKAT. The dpi was too small. I'm going to wait for CM 11. Once that comes out as a daily, there's probably be more kitkat flavors available.

I'm just running Shiny (11/2 build). Outside of the bugs with Google Search, seems to be nice. Kinda like the larger icons. But, it's still my tinkering device so relying on it isn't a big issue.

Hope this one is better.

OK, so a week ago or so, some questions came up about whether apps were native or whatever and I gave a rundown of what was what, including Google's quiet acquisition of the company that was working on precompiling and optimizing apps.

I ended it with the personal opinion that I didn't expect to see any of that in 4.4 - and I was wrong.

Google made a big splash about JIT compiling in Gingerbread. I miss the fun youtubes that they used to make to explain what was new under the hood btw, but I digress.

Here's what they told us was in 4.4 - http://www.android.com/versions/kit-kat-4-4/

Here's what they didn't tell - introducing ART, the new Android Runtime to replace the Dalvik -

http://gigaom.com/2013/11/06/google-starts-testing-art-a-potential-replacement-for-dalvik-in-android/

Curious 4.4 users - start your Developer Options.

ART is still experimental and incomplete.

http://source.android.com/devices/tech/dalvik/art.html

But to the extent that you may be able to get an early preview, I was wrong with that prediction.

Enjoy.

PS - the blogosphere will be sensationalizing and misrepresenting this in 3... 2...

PPS - think it through, always make a backup before tinkering.

I was reading a ton of stuff about ART around the internets lately - can't believe it was totally secret until 4.4, but the early reviews say it make a huge difference.

I'm excited to try it out.

My two lenses for my new camera system should be here Saturday and the camera should arrive next week at some point, maybe. Pretty excited about getting to try it out.

On another exciting note, our twins should arrive in the next week as well. Doctor said yesterday it could happen at any point now and he didn't expect it to be over a week. Not sure I can contain all of my excitement with the lenses, camera, and my first children arriving If Kit-Kat was scheduled to arrive on my Moto X this week too I don't know what I'd do with myself, lol

So if I order now, when it comes back in stock do I get it at the $199 or would I get it at whatever price it is then. Also, if it is a different price do I have a chance to cancel before they charge it?

There is no option to order now.

I was able to, but that doesn't mean I'll get it.

Nice. Good luck. I should have just hit that submit button when I had the 2 on my cart.

Not sure I can contain all of my excitement with the lenses, camera, and my first children arriving If Kit-Kat was scheduled to arrive on my Moto X this week too I don't know what I'd do with myself, lol
Congrats in advance! Babies and toys all in the same week is definitely a good thing.

Has anyone tried Chrome Cast?

I was so excited to get it when it first came out, but couldn't get it because it was always sold out. Now I see piles of them at Best Buy, but when I ask about it, they tell me it's only for online streaming like Netflix and Hulu.

Can anyone confirm that you cannot stream local files from your computer to a TV using this?

G'luck gEEk Stay cool, don't faint at critical moments, enjoy this life period and use the new lenses well. You'll have a couple of great subjects to take pics of with those.
Notice...: he's getting two kids in one order, and still talking about ' my first children'.

I love my Chromecast.

Apps available to cast from your phone or tablet, iOS or Android - Netflix, Hulu+, Play Movies, Play Music (ok those two are Android I guess), YouTube and as of about a week ago, Pandora.

Netflix video quality surpasses that built-in to a Samsung D series Smart TV.

You can cast content from a PC (Mac or Windows) using the Chrome browser (tab casting).

Mileage varies on that. I'm below the hardware requirements with my Mac and have no issues for my use, others are above it with Windows and have some trouble - it's a beta feature.

Not every media type is supported by the Chromecast natively, and many use Plex with a plug in to cast local media.

There was an app to cast any media on your Android device, AllCast, but it's been pulled because the SDK is in beta, other apps expected to appear when it's final.

That move and slow app releases have a lot of the natives restless.

Not me, I'm digging it.

Just ordered a free extended battery for the Gnex. Why? Because it was free.

Sprint is giving them away.

Chromecast lover here also!

^^ Thirded, love my Chromecast. I just need a network extender or some access points so I can get better/stronger wifi coverage in my house. I use it all the time. I hate using my built-in "smart TV" apps now that I have Chromecast.

EDIT: And what's awesome about Chromecast is development is just really getting started. The posibilities are pretty exciting.

Thanks to all of you I'll get pictures up when they arrive. Of the kids that is...not the camera equipment, lol.

The only thing I've heard about Chromecast in a long time is Pandora and I couldn't care less about Pandora. Still waiting on something/anything else.

Chromecast is pretty slick. Really only using it for youtube, everything else we do through Roku on our TV on a ethernet line. Just wish WatchESPN was either on Roku or chromecast. Someday.

It'll be really nice once google releases the SDK publicly and stops with the restrictions on apps.

One more gadget to consider for cord cutters. Roku is still great though, with Aereo, Netflix, and Amazon Prime.
