First of all, I love my GN! I can deal with the issues of button placement, battery drain, heat, speaker volume... Those issues will get resolved with updates or I'll get used to them.

The issue that has kept coming up over the past two weeks is call clarity. I know lots of people don't even use the phone part of a smartphone. I do. I keep having to ask people to repeat themselves - over and over! It is not a volume issue, the person comes across a bit garbled.

Is call clarity an issue that will improve with updates or not? Unfortunately, this might be a deal breaker if it is a hardware issue. Again, I love this phone and want to find a way to keep it - if at all possible. Could this be a defective handset?

Thoughts?

TIA

I will admit I don't use my phone as an actual phone very often but the couple times I have were fine.
Is it happening with everyone?

My call clarity is excellent, much better than my Inc which I thought was fine. Not quite moto clear, but really good. And this is a big issue for me as use my phone for calls a ton, unlike many here. Try and exchange and see if it helps I'd say.

Be glad that you have 4G, Some do not have 4G and it may take awhile to get it.

I do not have 4G in the sticks of Jersey, but that did not stop me from getting the Nexus and ICS experience.

Network speeds in SWFL are slow anyhow, too slow to do any sort of remote computing or even a decent VPN so I don't expect to get the speeds that I see people in major metro areas are bragging about.

What's frustrating is when the rezound is picking up 4g sitting right next to the GN on 3g... you know?

My call quality is excellent unless I put the earpiece volume at full blast, then it does get a bit garbled, but it's too loud at that setting anyway.

I think updates can fix radio issues, but I don't think this is a widespread problem.

Report-out

A roadtrip thru rural flatlands and hill-country with the Nexus

I've driven this route down many times and it takes me thru several areas in rural OH,IN, KY, and TN with a wide variety of Verizon coverages. There is a large dead area I drive thru that always rendered the Original Droid useless. The dead region was so large that if used for navigation, I would drive "off the map". It was not just a lack of data, but a total lack of signal. Not even voice. This was true as of late August 2011...my last drive thru the area prior to this trip.

Nexus and Signal
-The dead zone was NOT A PROBLEM FOR THE NEXUS! Not only did I maintain navigation ability at all times, I never lost voice and only lost data for a few minutes. Never long enough to empty the map buffer.
-Vast majority of the route had usable 3G.
-Indianapolis had good 4G as I drove by on I-65 and I-69.

Nexus is one hard worker
The Nexus was always doing at least double duty as navigator and media server. Most of the time it was doing triple: nav, music, & torrent.

At one point the Galaxy Nexus was simultaneously giving spoken turn-by-turn nav, streaming music thru bluetooth, downloading 4 movies, and wirelessly tethering internet to both an iPod touch and a laptop PC!

While the sheer amount of data moving thru the poor thing was enough to occasionally cause the music to skip briefly and the data was split into a near-useless streams, the phone never overheated, rebooted, or FC'd any app. Every function remained completely stable and usable.

Nexus for the long haul
At one point I managed to go 27 hours without a charge. CDMA only, but LTE was all I sacrificed during that stretch. Obviously, this was essentially all idling. A few texts and time-checks during that, but not else. Regular use was worry free and without restriction thanks to one extra battery and external charger. Even with the heaviest phone use the charger could easily refuel a spent battery before I needed to swap.

Device details
LTE Nexus
GummyNex 0.3.0
Apex 1.35 kernel using the default voltage
4.0.3 baseband
Nova Launcher Beta 5
No other mods or tweaks.

My laptop is crapping out. Can anyone recommend a good website for refurbs? I need something that will be good with gaming but won't break the bank.

Dammit, accidentally held the down button while turning on my phone and it booted into Odin Mode. I forget, is there anything special I need to do? Do I just leave it alone? It says "Downloading.. Do not turn off target!" on the screen.

As far as graphics on a laptop is concerned, is this good?

The only games I'm interested in playing is Skyrim and The Old Republic (also Sith Lords, the 2nd game in that series, that I wasn't able to run on my crappy laptop).

Quote:
  • 8GB DDR3 SDRAM
For multitasking power, expandable to 16GB.
  • Multiformat DVD±RW/CD-RW drive
    Create custom DVDs and CDs.
  • 15.6" LED high-definition widescreen display
With BrightView technology and 1366 x 768 resolution showcases movies and games in stunning clarity.
  • 640GB hard drive (5400 rpm)
Offers spacious storage and fast read/write times. ProtectSmart hard drive protection guards your laptop against bumps and drops.
  • Built-in SimplePass fingerprint reader
    Protects sensitive information.
  • AMD Radeon HD 6620G discrete-class graphics
Feature up to 4085MB total video memory for lush images and vivid detail. HDMI output for flexible connectivity options.
I know it's not up to optimum gaming standards, but will I be able to get by on it?

Pull the battery and reboot. It's safe to do that while in this mode.

I'm not in the sticks and don't have it by my house. Couple miles east and I do, and less than that in other directions I can get it. It taunts me.

Ah, okay, seems to be rebooting by itself now.

EDIT: On a separate note, decided I'm gonna leave the case off for a while. The Diztronic is about as thin as it gets, but nothing really compares to having the phone bare.

No, it's some weird thing that puts it into a "download mode" or something. I forget what it is. But I've done it myself a few times by accident. You can try pushing the power button a few times, but I think it will just stay that way unless you do something.

My friend let me borrow the first season, and I'm not sure what he encoded them from, but they're .mkv files. And they're definitely HD.

I did a bit of research online and found out that the first season isn't available until January 2012 on blu-ray.

I think it's best that I don't ask how he got them.

I thought about getting a screen protector and a case for it, but decided not to. I don't like having a case on it, especially since I'm swapping out the battery for a fresh one at least once a day.

My OG Droid's screen was pristine before I caved it in with a hammer yesterday. I'm always really careful to place it in my inner jacket pocket (silk lining, nothing else in there), or my left pants pocket with nothing else in it.

I did the same with the OG Droid for more than a year, so I think I'll be okay.

It is Odin Mode. Pull the battery. Then power up. Try to keep your fingers away from the volume rocker when powering up.

Okay, so I pulled the trigger on an HP quad core laptop. I read the reviews for it from PC Mag and others, and it seems really solid graphics-wise.

I'm excited to finally have something other than a dinosaur. Plus, it's work-related so I can either write it off for this year still (just ordered it!), or I can have my work reimburse me.

Can someone tell me how "turbo core" works on a laptop? When does the turbo in GHz happen?

Hey Han -

Hope it's not too late - two problems I can see with the lappy you were looking at -

The disk drive is too slow, easy fix.

The screen res is too low for almost anything...

How much did you spend on it?

It was $500, which is what I wanted to spend. Disc drive doesn't matter too much to me, but screen res does. Is there anything else that is good for games and has a higher res at around the same price?

Also, to be honest, the thing that sold me on it was this video:

DV6-6145DX Skyrim Test - YouTube

I mean, it's at least playable. I would play most games on medium settings anyway.

Skyrim and The Old Republic, those are both time intensive games. I've been playing skyrim alot and I feel like I'm getting nowhere.

I would say good choice on the HP. I have an HP Pavilion dv8. They don't sell it anymore.

Since I'm getting some help on the laptop issue, can you guys check these out, and tell me which is best for gaming? I know laptops aren't the best choice for gaming in the first place, but I'm not going to be gaming on it a lot. But when I do, I'd like to have a passable time.

HP - Factory-Refurbished Pavilion Laptop - Pewter - g7-1255dx

HP - Factory-Refurbished Pavilion Laptop - Steel Gray - dv7-6154nr

Hewlett Packard - Pavilion g7-1150us LW320UAR 17.3" LED Notebook - Refurbished - Intel Core i3 i3-370M 2.40 GHz - Charcoal Gray - g7-1150us LW320UAR

And the one I chose:

HP - Factory-Refurbished Pavilion Laptop / AMD A-Series Processor / 15.6" Display - Dark Umber - dv6-6145dx

I just don't know what all the graphics/processor info means.

Edit: I usually try to buy refurbished, because they're well tested and my credit card adds a 1 year warranty to them.

IMO I would wait for a Dell Outlet coupon, they come pretty regularly and I would expect that right after the first of the year they'll have a surplus with the xmas returns. It's hard to beat the bang/buck on those systems.

You're going to want to step up to 1920 x 1080 on a 15" display for almost everything you do these days. Websites don't even fit on the 768 screens very well anymore.

You are on the right track with the discrete graphics, I'm not sure where the one that you selected ranks, but checkout Notebook Check's benchmarks for a good idea of where it stands in relationship to what you have now and/or other systems.

Gaming Performance List

CPU's

For the disk drive - I hear you, but the difference between a 7200 RPM drive and a 5400 RPM drive is huge in terms of system response time. You don't realize how often the system goes to the drive for little bits of data. Of course an SSD is holy grail in that department - I won't run a system without it now, It's the single best upgrade that I have ever done to a PC (and that's with about 30 yrs of use)

The funny thing is that you may not need a quadcore CPU, most games don't make use of more than 2 cores.. 99% of the time gamers are better off getting a faster 2 core CPU than they are a quad.

Can you give me an example? Suppose I'm playing Old Republic or something. How often would I get lag or freeze ups because of the disk drive response time?

Considering installing AutoKiller Memory Optimizer. I know task killers on Android are useless, but this seems a little different. Anyone tried it?

EDIT: Here's a quick how-to guide. I'm still just not sure if this is necessary for ICS; I'd like a bit better battery life, but all the reviews I'm seeing are from pre-ICS devices.

EDIT2: Emailed the developer:
Quote:
Hello, I hope you don't mind me dropping you an email, I just had a quick question. I have a Galaxy Nexus and was wondering if AutoKiller Memory Optimizer was compatible with Android 4.0, and also if it's necessary. I'd like to get a little better battery life, but if it's redundant to internal processes implemented for Android 4.0, it won't help. Could you let me know if this app would be good for me to download? Thanks.
His reply:

Definitely, I also use that device as a daily driver. my app is fully compatible with ics.

Unless they recently updated, Quadrant doesn't play nice with some dual core phones...like ours... try antutu

That HD is fine for what you do Han & you can easily upgrade it on your own if you ever need or want to.

Turbo is a tech from intel that allows the cpu to run at higher frequencies when it detects apps/processes not calling for all 4 cores. aka A single threaded process is detected by the cpu and the cpu cuts power to 3 cores and ramps up the frequency on the single core that is doing the work. If the app is multi-threaded and makes use of multiple cores that turbo frequency is applied respectively. Single core = highest frequency & All 4 cores = lowest

This is how I understand it

Default So get this

After the trying to install a "naughty" version of windows 7 and nearly bricking my PC I was saved by a buddy. He placed an installation of Ubuntu 11.10 on a flash drive for me. I had backed up all my files before the "naughtiness" so I wiped the computer clean and fresh installed Ubuntu on a single partition. I am done with Windows! Unlock and root........here I finally come!

haha! Glad it worked out

I've tried Linux, and tried to like it, but it just didn't do it for me. I learned computers hard and software on a PC. I see why there is hype for it though and hope it can get better in the future!

Does anyone know if The Old Republic is online multiplayer only?

I'm reading the reviews on amazon and I see a lot of reference to server ques, etc. Can I just buy the disc and play single player?

MobileCity still has it on pre-order, presumably with an arrival date of January 3rd (though it was delayed once and may be again). I put myself on stock alert so I will get an e-mail as soon as it's available... well, that's how it's supposed to work anyway

The replacement TPU case from Ditztronic arrived and the modified version has no sign of the volume button issues of the original. I see that they removed a thin layer of material on the inside of the case over the volume rocker so the change does not alter the appearance of the case.

I think it's best that I don't ask how he got them.
I was just in Bangkok and it's astounding what you can buy on the street there. I'm sure some of you (BB?) are thinking naughty thoughts, but I saw the HBO series "Game of Thrones" (IMO better than Boardwalk and I love Boardwalk) plus a couple of million other DVDs. I would never buy something like that, but I know someone who did who then encoded them and transferred them to his Nexus. The scoundrel also bought Cuban cigars while he was there. I'm embarrassed to know such people.
