hey everyone, hope your holidays were great. Been so busy playing with my kids, the phone stuff got put on the back burner for a week or so. Talked my mother in law into an android phone, she gets it tomorrow. Unfortunately my sister, her husband, and my dad all got iphones over the holiday. Win some you lose some i guess. I did enjoy owning siri with google voice commands...

although I really love this phone, I am disliking the camera. first off, tell me if you feel the same but by placing the camera centered toward the top, I find myself keep touching the lens as I handle the phone. I think a better place for the camera would be off center.
and picture quality is simply not impressive. granted I am not looking for dslr quality, but quality on par with a digicam would be nice. also the camera produces blurry images unless you are in bright daylight or keep it stationary in low light.
We usually have nothing but bad to say about Big Red, but I wanted to give a big public THANK YOU to my local corporate store.
My charging cable went out! You know, the little 4-footer that came with the Nexus. Just died and wouldn't charge the phone anymore. Well, Verizon hooked me up. They pulled a wall charger with a NINE FOOT cable - retail price $29.99 - and GAVE it to me!
SO now I have more cable than I know what to do with to charge my phone at night.
Oh BTW:
My test is turning into a success... after 4 hours off the charger with moderate use (a phone call, light surfing and constant music streaming to my BT headset) my extended battery is STILL at 75%.
That's with wi-fi on and Juice Defender set to "Balanced". Best battery life I've seen in 2 weeks!
Its funny how the same gesture is met with a different reaction.
The stock wall wart charger that came with my Gnex was dead out of the box. I called VZW CS and they steered me to the store. When I called the local store the 9 footer was their first offer so I headed in with everything packed in the box my phone came in.
At the store, they brought out the aftermarket charger and I asked for a few minutes to factory reset my phone since I was going to return it. The manager asked why and I told him that the aftermarket charger doesnt replace a faulty phone out of the box. They ended up finding a new in the wrapper wall wart for the Nexus and that's what I took in exchange.
New Years dinner around here consists of pork and sauerkraut. I despise it so. I like pork. I like sauerkraut. But the two together just isn't my cup of tea.
Trick is to use super fatty pork, bacon, applesauce and rise the heck out of the kraut. Good stuff

yes, i really like it. makes great pics without flash...at first I thought it would just be for artistic shots, but it is actually set to natural colors by default and is pretty intelligent. i found the colors on the stock cam to be off. actually the colors on the front facing camera are more accurate.
also hdr cam gives really great stabilization. shots come out crisp even when i'm not holding it very steady.
one downside is it's not great for motion shots. you will see ghosting because you have to hold the camera for a while after pressing the trigger as it takes several shots with different exposures and calculates the best shot.
i also use another camera app called camera zoom fx. it has a stable shot mode, where it won't fire till you hold the camera stable. also burst mode, which is great for action shots.

Thanks for that. I am not sure I like the idea of holding the phone until it fires off a few shots. I guess I have to try. I am a photographer and although I wouldn't expect a cell phone to take good pics, but this stock camera software is disappointing. However, it does shoot with zero lag, which by itself is impressive.

For a phone camera this is about as bad as they come. Amazed at how many people find the camera ''acceptable''! It is horrid.

Hello fellow Nexicans! Good to see so many familiar faces here. First want to say I am in love w/ my Nexus and get made fun of at home constantly w/ words such as (addict, geek, and obsession). Jealousy is a stinky cologne. And followed Hans advice of trying out Nova Launcher....Love that too and no more Gsearch bar on top and landscape mode.
I was holding off on buying a desk dock because the home screen did not do landscape but just sprung for the same one others here have bought w/ the pogo pins.
One question though I can't seem to find the answer to and although it may be buried somewhere in here but has there been any confirmation if the ECS-K1F2BEGSTD is going to work w/ our LTE phones? I did try the Verizon version but like many others was disappointed in it and took it back. I did test fit my phone and although a tight fit, the tolerance was not crazy and it appeared it was probably the same exact 'case' they use in the ECS-K1F2BEGSTD minus the meaningful parts. Anyone? Anyone?

Used Google Wallet for the First Time!
Well, my favorite local gas station finally got a PayPass terminal so in I went with my charged Google Wallet to buy some gas. Entered my code and then cleared it to the home screen & put her in standby before going in.
"$40 on pump 3, please."
"Okay, $40 please."
"Run it as credit..."
Put my phone to the terminal and in less than a second it was DONE!
Signed the receipt paperwork (yes, there's still paperwork involved: they're SO archaic ) and got ready to leave.
The clerk turned around to her co-worker and said, "A guy just paid for his gas with his phone!"
To which I smiled at her and said, "Way of the future, baby!" and left to get my gas.
Next time I'll go in when it's crowded just to show off a bit

i wish google wallet was working again one of the most fun features of the nexus! since i switched roms it doesnt work something about a security error
I saw the same thing until I went to a custom ROM/kernel. I would only get 5-6 hours out of the extended battery on stock but now, with GummyNex (uses Fab's kernel), I see anywhere between 12-15 hours depending on usage.
It makes me wonder if the stock 4.02 kernel doesn't play nice with the extended battery.
I've been using 4.0.3 for a while now, mostly with the Franco kernel.

That's another reason I don't plan on rooting & ROMming this phone. It's great as it is IMHO besides, I'm not sure how long I'll actually have it but something tells me it'll be awhile before something equivalent comes out...
OK....finally back from vacation and done reading reviews...Went to my corporate VZW store and got the frigging phone!! Step one done, since im the type that will read reviews forever! Coming from the Eris, tin cans and strings would have been an upgrade. My Daughter loves it (dad I want one, its so like my Ipod touch), my wife hates it (why do you need a smart phone...300 frigging (sic) hundred bucks for a phone and you didn't get a case!!!!.....lol). Still batting 50% the way I see it!!
Gonna wait to root for a few weeks to see what happens. just got 4.0.4.update
Im happy, have full bars and 4g @home and all the way across Pensacola, so we may have a good network here.
First impressions are good~~~except for the car charger being different~~~~

Something that was posted a a few days ago about the camera was instead of just tapping the button to snap off a quick pic is to HOLD your finger on the release button till the camera focuses and then release the button. yes it does slow down picture taking but your pics will improve by quite a lot. I've tried this and seen a marked improvement to the pics that I've taken so far.
I think some of this can be addressed in the software in a future OTA.

Same here. I have the origanl 4.02 rom.
The only thing that I did was, Unlook it and back it up.

Not sure if you still needed an answer, but the backup should be in /sdcard/clockworkmod/backup/<backup_name>. Every CWM backup set should have 6 files.

Was wondering if anyone new of an app that that can be used to create a widget that will perform multiple tasks? For example, when I go to place that I get little or no signal but can connect to wifi I will turn airplane mode on (with a widget), then turn wifi on (with a diff widget), then in call settings I check the "receive internet calls" option (use google voice and native SIP integration). I'm wondering if anyone knows of an app that would allow a single toggle widget to accomplish this all in one???

Sounds like you want to check out Tasker. It is a multi function app. I don't use it but have heard only good things about it. Check to see if Llama does what you need as well. I'm sure others here can suggest additional apps as well

While on the subject of gaming, do I need to play the earlier Elder Scroll games to understand Skyrim? Or will I get as much out of it going in fresh?
While playing the other ones helps with some of the lore and how some of the organizations work, you'll be fine without having played the rest. All of them hold up well on their own and all you need to know is in the game somewhere.. like in the books you run across. Since each game is essentially a different country each time, there isn't really a lot linking them together beyond the world/lore.

is there an outage on verizon today or something? I flushed the new radios and gummynex yesterday through cwm and 24 hours later, I have no 3g. 4g works fine but 3g says it gets a good signal but the bars stay gray and no data. Any suggestions?

Have you tried flashing back the older radios to see if it corrects it?
The Following User Says Thank You to jbdan For This Useful Post:
not yet...trying to do a little research first...would you suggest I try that? I was actually thinking of flashing the new radios again.
I would flash the older radios and test out your 3G. There could be a 3G issue in your area who knows. I wouldn't try flashing the same radio atop one another. With the Inc, although quite different, flashing the same radio twice could brick the phone. I don't know what it'll do to the GN

Thanks, easy enough to test. I like that the picture taking is instantaneous, I don't mind holding the shutter button and give the camera time to focus. that may improve the focus, but will it improve the image quality? I think HDR will actually improve the image quality. But I haven't tried it in daylight yet.

well that's good to know, haha, glad i didn't try that. what about something less drastic first, like pulling out the simcard? could that help reset it? In the status it says eHRDP:13, in service, and either connecting or disconnected. Signal strength seems good. it looks as if it is on 1x but thinks it's on eHRDP13
anyway, how would I pull out the simcard on this thing? I've always had verizon, this sim card stuff is new to me.

Sure you could try it, that is supposed to reprogram (or reactivate) the phone afaik. Also updates the PRL, if needed, from what I have read.
Pop the back off, pull battery, push the little sim card inward till a click to release it and slide it out. Kind of delicate and tedious it's a little awkward removing it. Leave it out for a bit then put it back in the same way it came out & making sure it "clicks" and locks in place. Install battery and boot her up

tried it, did nothing. guess the next step is to try and flash the old radios back...my battery is low and i'm charging the phone, is it bad to flash with the phone plugged into the charger?
edit: I charged it up to 17% and said OK, enough's enough i'm gonna plug it into the computer to flash it anyway, so it'll be getting some juice. All of a sudden 3g magically came on (about 5 hours after it disappeared). So...the phone knew what i was planning and got scared? I'm gonna go to sleep now, and see how it does overnight I guess. Don't know if I should still flash the old radios back tomorrow. Don't want it to go out on me again. I was in an area tonight with low 4g and couldn't get any data b/c the 3g was out.

After your alarm goes off if you accidentally leave the alarm screen the alarm just keeps going off with no way to get back to the screen? What am I missing here?

It should show up in your notification bar. Pull it down and click and it will give you the option to snooze or dismiss.

Good morning everyone -- happy new year!
Took a break from the internet for the past few days, just basic stuff on my phone, but really didn't jump on any forums. Wanted to hang with friends and family to start off the new year and it felt great to get away for a few days.
Back at work now and looks like we're gonna have a real busy year.
Hope everyone is well -- missed you all!

The radio on this thing is really starting to get to me.
Where I sit at work has 0 bars of service (sits at -120dBm sometimes) and my connection times out such that when I do get to an area of service I have to toggle airplane mode sometimes for it to work. I just wish they would move my desk (unlikely) or fix this radio or something.
Grrr.

Do you guys have comparison to places you went with your "old phone" versus the nexus and compared how well it holds calls.
Mine is sort of 10 years ago, in it's reception. It doesn't drop many, but they fade in and out for 2-3 seconds, like they used to.
Same stretches of road, that sort of thing.
Is that the Radio, you're talking about?

speaking of signal... especially Han and any others who are in the chicagoland area...
I get crappy 4G in the city but glorious 4G in some of the suburbs. What gives? I've seen some amazing speedtest results and really low dbm... in say, Schaumburg, but in Chicago, I'm lucky to keep 4G, inside, outside, north side, downtown. I would think it'd be the opposite. I even installed that BAMF 4G LTE toggle, but switching to LTE only gets it stuck, trying to find signal, here in the city.
I'm currently on the EK06/EK04 radio (4.0.3 leak) on Axi0m 2.3 ... is anyone getting stellar 4G on another radio/rom combo, in Chicagoland, that I should try?
