Default The experiment

So, I guess I sinned, depending on how you want to look at things. But perhaps not. Some may wonder why I even posted this here, if I wanted to start something. I bet even some of you may even think I fell for the hype or have more money then brains or what ever. Maybe I did but I wanted to try something, with a bit of an open mind as a tech junky.

The experiment:

I hope the experiment is to sell it on craigslist and get you a nice shiny android + profit

I'm just kidding. Its good to have an open mind and try the other side. I couldn't deal with the "walled garden". Maybe youll find you enjoy it. To each their own.

Let us know if/how you like it!

I plan on using this thread as a dump post while I experiment with this thing

Getting signed in was easy, already had an apple id from way back in the day when I had itunes on my PC. All the stuff I bought from iTunes is there. And there was a lot. Which is one reason I went this route.

The default wall papers need to go, which, is about the only customization I can do, but I knew that already.

Have fun changing those wallpapers!
Haha, no, there's tons of folks here with iPads. Maybe I'm dumb, but that's a mini right?

Full sized 9.7" With AT&T LTE (not activated, yet). I could not see getting the mini when it would likely not fit in my pocket, and when I have the Nexus 7. I was wanting something a bit bigger and getting a bunch of android tablets and phones seemed a bit redundant.

I have not had to charge it yet. It was 85% when I got it. Its at like 65% right now.

Some stuff I have done so far:
Set a couple reminders for next week (lets see if it works, I never used this feature on anything yet)
Set airplay mirroring and played Angry birds (need to bench test things, right? ) on the iPad and my 47" tv. Also tried web browsing, youtube videos, tried the camera but it did not work, not that it was needed, I just wanted to try it.

The device is fairly light, easy to handle, or sit in my lap. I have not used if for long periods of time, or trying to write long post or work processing on the thing, if needed, I would have to spring for a keyboard.

Construction is, as you would expect, premium. It, honestly, is a bit of a step up from many of the android devices. Does Apple have a patent on aluminum too? Is that why most android devices are Polycarbonate? I am sure the Polycarbonate is cheaper and more absorbant, but I am getting off track.

I have yet to harass siri, that is on the to-do list
Or download some of my previous content to the device.
This thing is a finger print magnent! I am glad I got the white one!
Text is sharp and clear zoomed all the way in. The LCD is bright, I have it at about 45% or around that.

I am starting to wonder if I should have got the 64gb version. I think I can manage the 32gig, will know more when I dig into this thing a bit more.

EDIT:
A bit more.

I also notice a lot of ads and pop ups, but I am used to using an ad blocker (I know, I don't need to hear it, ) on some games and web viewing. So, not really an Apple only thing there.

I'm an Android fanatic. I have never personally owned an iOS device. Even I can see the appeal with the iPad tablets. They are excellent devices even if the OS is boring as hell

Recently I had to set up my sister-in-law's iPad she got as as Christmas gift from her boss and every time I have had to help set up an iOS device I am left with one thought...how and the hell do people call iOS devices intuitive? I think they are a PITA to work with initially. Or is it just because I'm too used to the way Android works???

Why not discuss it at our other forum? I'm sure folks there will be quite interested.

Sorry if my experiment post is causing any issues, this was not my intent. I wanted to try out a device as an "android user trying out a device" and wanted to post my thoughts here for anyone else who may be thinking about doing the same.

To me, tech is tech. Each device has its place and everyone has their own tastes (insert bad joke here )

I understand this is a forum for android users, so, if need be, this thread can be locked or removed or what not. I honestly was not trying to start any friction.

I am just kind of tired and saddened that there seems to be a war out there between the users of the two platforms (I know there are others, like windows and RIM) and I feel it kind of sucks that there cannot be a decent conversation without elitism and fanboyism cropping up. Not that it happens here, this place is fantastic, there is rarely any problems, and staff is great. I am talking everywhere I look.

So, with that said, thanks for listening, and if this thread needs locked, I guess that is okay, if anyone wants me to keep posting my thoughts on the device, I guess I can do that too

What's up EM? Long time

To the OP's point...I think there is less hatred between Apple and Android fans these days. We all have our preferences and sure...we give the other side shit...but I know so many people that have now owned devices from multiple platforms and they can't deny that any major OS has distinct advantages and disadvantages.

I say have fun with your experiment and enjoy the device. If you love it...keep it. If you hate it...sell it on craigslist and pick up a different tablet.

Starting to have thoughts about returning the thing, as much as I hate doing so. Why? Well so far I have not really been using it. Has the novelty worn off already? Perhaps I got too many mobile / portable devices and this one is redundant. Sure, I got a bunch of iTunes stuff, surely I don't need an ipad to play things, the MacBook will just fine, or the time capsule since I shoved an solid state drive into it.

For the money, I could get a powerful windows laptop or a decent desk top and run windows side by side or something. I, unfortunately, do kind of need windows for rooting as well as raw file access to my archived photos.

I hate making returns.

Aj, there with ya. I spend so little time at home that it's mostly with my laptop or phone. If I need something to travel with, it's my chromebook. Only reason I need my N7 is for Netflix support.
Don't really use the Prime anymore since it's just too heavy. Wife occasionally uses it for sales proposals though. Still not a fan of big tablets.

I am a big fan of tablets but that's because it suits me and what I need them to do. I have a laptop that basically serves only as a desktop for work. At night, I am all phone and tablet.

My wife uses her iPad as an e-reader and not much more. She would much rather go to her laptop if she wants to access a simple website or Facebook. Everyone is different and it's always interesting to me to read about how other people use and view the same technology that I use.

Screw the iPad...Go get the Nvidia Shield

I would be interested in your thoughts on your iPad. Not everyone here visits other iOS centric sites. I'm sure your opinions will be informative. Don't worry about any "friction". The moderators do a good job here to keep the discussions civil.

I actually think my mom would get more use out of a mini then I would of this device. Don't get me wrong, its solid, I have yet to charge the battery in it, that just shows how little I use it.

I may exchange it for a mini for my mom, then pass her 8.9" kindle to my dad since the paperwhite is too small for him. She feels very restricted with the kindle.

I can get the wifi version for her and since she now has my old SIII and I got some tec tiles laying around and we have tethering enabled on our plan, I can just pop a tec tile in the car that she can tap when she needs to use tethering. I guess all of us could.

I am almost sure that an ipad mini would do pretty much all she needs it to do and could possibly replace her MBP for the most part, other then watching a DVD or doing finances.

So, other then the fact that I may have talked myself into the thing, I don't see many issues with it. Sure the static monotonous OS and layout, to me, is boring. Hardware is not really much to sneeze at. Its pretty decent to hold, but for long stretches at a time, I am not sure.

I think she would get more use out of a mini the I would from this larger device.

And, honestly, peeps, if you are thinking about giving one a go, give it a try, keep an open mind I am sure I would not have much trouble with this, but the fact that I have to kind of force myself to use it, tells me, its not the device I am looking for. There is a plan B for getting my stuff off the cloud, and that is an external HDD, or perhaps the time capsule which is a lot less then the tablet cost.

I think its going back

I was a beta tester for windows 8 ....meh..

but I gotta say ....the Androids here are way more fun and helpful than the igeeks over on the "other" forum!

My thoughts exactly on my iPad too.
it can come in really handy sometimes, but most of the times either my phone can cover the task, or my computer is in reaching distance.

After sleeping on it, perhaps the LTE mini would be better, if it will fit in my pocket. Not sure yet.
