Default Military Madness-- If You've Signed Up, then Sign In Here!

Alright, feeling moderately guilty (not really) about hijacking a thread to talk squid with someone, so here's a thread for all us military and former military Phandroiders.

So, weigh in-- what branch, are you still in, or have you gotten out? What did you do, etc.

I own a t-shirt that says, "Been there, done that... retired Navy."

ATC(AW/SW/MTS), USN (retired)

Are spouses welcome?

Husband is a US Air Force veteran, 40% compensable disabled.

That works for me, too.

The VA determined that I am half the man I used to be... good benefits, especially here in the land of fruits and nuts.

I enlisted in the Navy in 1988 under the Nuclear Power program and about midway through the school got picked up for the US Naval Academy. After four years was commissioned and became a Naval Flight Officer in the EA-6B Prowler community. Did an operational tour at Whidbey Island NAS, WA and then became an instructor at the Fleet Replacement Squadron. After that, I resigned my commission as I decided the military wasn't for me. Like anything else in life...had some good times and some bad times.

Took this photo during a two-ship low-level training mission over eastern WA (I think it was the VR-1351).

Bunch of squids running around here.

USMC 2000-06. Let's run through my MOS's: 0311, 0321, 0431. Infantry and embark a great combination.

Damn straight. Someone needs to keep you jarheads in line.

I served from 1984-2005; 21 years, two months.

I loved having Marines working for me-- I say something needs to be done, and they are on top of it; unlike most squids who were just as likely to tell me to piss off.

Ohh Rah, Semper Fi. My MOS 3531 the preferred taxi and hauling for grunts. Sure, I was a pogue, but I had fun hauling grunts around to various training missions. I got to play with fun stuff.

Edit: I was in from 2000-2004 stationed at Pendleton. Spent some time in the sandbox and some time on a ship. To the squid on board, I am a Shellback

You never have to thank me. The American tax payers let me jump out of planes, scuba diving in every ocean, I lived on the beach, and had a porn star girlfriend. It wasn't bad.

We can all razz each other about our service branches, but it's harmless bantering: we're all on the same team! Thank you all for your service... and military spouses: you had the toughest job! I SALUTE you!

I hear you, Chief. Often as not, we know more about their job than they do.

This is true. I pretty much am the geek squad for friends and family. It's kind of a sixth sense. Anyway, I have fond memories in Iraq and Kuwait where we would pull up a 7 ton truck, drop the tarp on one side, connect a laptop to a projector, then get a still in theater's DVD bought from the Bazzar.

Ah, yes... the good old trailer-side theater in the Sandbox. That was years ago, before they turned the place into a mini-mall.

Exactly!

I feel guilty falling into that category. When my husband and I met, he had been shipped back to the US for treatment of his injury; fate arranged that he was sent to Edwards AFB (here in California), instead of MacDill AFB (near his family in Florida) or somewhere else. After surgery and everything, he was on medical leave and decided to stay in CA for a while, so he got an apartment in Hollywood and the rest, as they say, is history. We met through a mutual friend and ended up getting married. We lived in Florida for a while, and the one thing I'll always remember most about my trips to MacDill is...the STENCH!! OMG, Old Tampa Bay had a really bad problem back then with stinking. (Hey, I should tell Stinky Stinky to join us here! ) I always knew we were getting close because I could smell it.

I lived just outside MacDill (and two blocks from the bay) for several years before moving across the bay to St. Pete... I still say the worst stench is in Jacksonville when the wind comes from the north... nothing quite like the stench of a paper plant, though winery comes pretty darn close.
