Post Some tips for rooting [Mac OS]

I'm kind of new to rooting, so for me this wasn't exactly one-click. For other people like me who are less experienced with terminal/rooting, here are some tips that might help. These might not ALL be required for this to work, but I'm just going through the exact steps I took for this to be successful. Some of these steps might be a no-brainer for some of you, but please be patient with the rest of us :D
NOTE: I did this on a Mac with terminal, not a PC with command prompt.

Here's what a successful root should look like, if you follow the below steps.

1. After you connect your phone to your Mac, make sure the USB connection mode is set to Internet connection: Ethernet and you've enabled Debugging mode [Settings > Applications > Development > USB Debugging]. I wasn't able to enable debugging unless I had already set the USB connection mode to Ethernet.

2. Download the Android SDK. Unzip it and place it on your desktop and open up the platform-tools folder. Inside that folder is a file called "adb." Rename it to "adb.osx" (without the quotes) by just adding the .osx to the end (for those more familiar with Windows, don't worry, there is no hidden extension). Keep this Finder window open.

3. Open your spectrum_root_linux_osx folder that you've already downloaded and unzipped. Copy the entire contents of this folder into the platform-tools folder from step 2.

4. Open up terminal. Type chmod 755 and then drag and drop the run.sh file. Hit enter (this is just changing the permissions for the file, if I understand correctly).

5. Again, drag and drop the run.sh file into terminal. Just hit enter, and your phone should successfully root!

==============================

(A) If you get this error: ./adb.osx: No such file or directory, make sure that all the contents from your spectrum_root_linux_osx folder are within the platform-tools folder and you renamed the "adb" file to "adb.osx" (without the quotes).

Default No-Go

I've been trying to root my phone (Lucid) for a while now. Seem to have all things in the right place.

Got the Platform-Tools from the SDK manager, Copied all files into the Platform-Tools folder, changed the adb to adb.osx, put in this command line to terminal

chmod 755 (dragged run.sh here)

hit enter, dragged and entered run.sh again.

Also my phone is connected via usb, debugging, and ethernet options are on, as well as the Unknown Sources app installation option.

It should be known I'm new to this and I've had very few experiences in the past, and development and commands etc.. is almost brand new to me.

Also, my phone has the latest updates, I don't know if I need to factory reset the phone before rooting etc.

Edit: I'm on Mac OSX

Help greatly appreciated, thanks.

Attached is the Terminal snapshot after running run.sh

Is this actually for the lucid and if so, why is it having me download an LG Spectrum rooting tool? I'm nervous I'm going to brick my phone. I don't mind voiding the warranty as long as this works. Also, do I have to unmount my sd card in my phone before doing this? I've done that before and lost a bunch of content on my page screens and on my phone itself including personalized ringtones. Thanks

It's a hoax. IMM76D is a version of a Nexus S update.

I wish I could... it was on the phone when it was given to me 2 weeks ago. I'll ask around and see what I can find.

Oh, and I appreciate the hoax comment. Like I came here to screw with you people. Nice.

Sorry if I offended you, but you have to admit that with your limited post count and the fact that there has barely been a sniff of a custom rom - let alone ICS or JB for this phone that it sounds EXTREMELY fishy that you would just have - by chance - a Lucid running ICS. And not only that, but it's an image from another phone. So, that would mean that someone has not only created a custom rom for the Lucid, but it is ICS as well - and the only proof we have of that is one post on a message board.

Considering you have the missing link, you should consider making an image of your phone and sharing it with the masses.

On his screen capture the battery icon is upright instead of lying down, BUT that could just be the new software. Everything else in the png he uploaded with the exception of the build number looks and seems legit. Lets not forget he says he works at a wireless carrier, we don't know what department, and as far as we know Verizon may have found that the Nexus build works on the Lucid, highly unlikely, but you never know... I've got some feelers put in to Verizon about this and maybe I'll hear back with some info to share......

I did post a screenshot from my phone look again. I think the "missing link" comment was about your post where you posted the link to the Nexus stuff.

Its definitely a LG Lucid and it definitely is running ICS. I asked around at work and it is part of a preproduction test where we get the software pushed to us and test it out a provide feedback to the manufacturer.

What other screenshots would you like to see? Or by "image" do you mean copying the software? Don't know how to do that.

I think there's a tool to pull the image in one of the root threads. I'll see if I can find it for you. If we can get that image, it would be a big step forward to creating a better Rom for this phone.

Well, you might have to get a hold of Shabbypenguin. He had a one-click-dump script, but it looks like he removed it from his site. He may have a way to pull the image off your phone.

Well you could pull up the software info screen again showing the build,,, etc and take a photo with a camera and post it, that way you show it really is a Lucid and with the software screen up it shows what you're running so that way there won't be no way to say it's fake, unless of course you've played with the build prop.... LOL

Enjoy

But wait there's no LG logo on the top of the phone! Hoax!!!
That's what you get when taking a photo with another phone and the flash. Did the best I could
But wait it's only 3G! Hoax!
I don't have LTE coverage at my house. Sorry.
But wait how do we know that is a Lucid? Hoax!
SW version says VS 840 which is the Lucid model #

Did I miss anything?
(just having some fun with you guys)

No I can tell in both photo's that it's a Lucid. Pretty much figured you worked for VZ anyway. That should be proof enough for most that you got what you got, unless of course you know how to edit your build prop. But I figure you got the real deal and those I talked to at VZ are very silent, only saying that the Lucid isn't scheduled to get ICS, but that JB was hinted at as being the upgrade that's supposed to be out sometime in Oct. We'll just have to wait and see......(Now somebody get that man a program to dump the image of the phone that's easy to use so some devs can get working on a kick butt rom like they did for the ally.... LOL)

Default Figured it out!

I was having a similar trouble with all of this. I just figured it out and would like to share my solution.

The instructions that meggaplex gave are great, except for one crucial step that made the difference for me:

1. Go to Terminal
2. Type cd (and then a space)
3. Type the path to the platform-tools folder. If you don't know how to do this, open up platform-tools in Finder, then drag the little blue folder to Terminal.
4. Press enter.

Now you're ready to either drag the run.sh file to Terminal, or just type "sh run.sh" without quotes. This worked for me!
Good luck!

Well, this is heartening. I've had my Lucid for a few months now and I've been wanting pretty badly for either ICS, or a custom ROM, with neither showing up. Granted your having it doesn't guarantee it will be released, but at least it shows it *is* being worked on, and the Lucid wasn't a pump&dump.

Ok just tried the software update on my Lucid, I'm getting the download error that most others areas well. If you hit the INFO button, under update status you'll see Failed update. I tried the Lg tool and it downloaded a pdf file that referenced Lucid ICS called "RDL-1207-00094_PDM_LG-VS840_VZW_QRG_ES_Printout_V1.2_ICS_120711.pdf" So maybe we are getting ICS at least and they're having problems with it on the servers or something........

I'm wondering, does anyone have a Un-Rooted Lucid to see if it will download the update that refuses to download? I've heard from some that say if you're phone is rooted it will not allow the update to download. So just wondering if everyone has their phones rooted and if someone has one that isn't to see if it will download it.....

Default OK now that we have ICS - we need a new root tool!

Ok so now we've updated to ICS, congrats you just lost root and the spectrum root doesn't work on ICS..... so now what???? We just gotta wait and see who comes up with a way to root this baby again, I'm already having withdrawals about not being able to use Titanium Backup.... LOL

Hoping someone can get a one step root tool out there soon.....

i posted a link in another thread on here ill post it here to it worked for my lucid and if you were rooted before all you got to do is download the script.

it works just like the one click method did before, this one you extract file then run the script called run me and then it tells you what to press and thats it

and i still dont know if im allowed to link to another forum

Nice find. Make a new thread for it. Make sure to put "root" in brackets and have for ics somewhere in there.

edit: I've seen others link to xda so I don't think it's a problem.

*scratches head* you found it bro. The link to xda will prove it's not yours and just mention in body that you found it and all credits should go to so and so. No problem.

I've upgraded to ICS and installd root....it installed fine and i removed all the bloatware but now when I reboot I get a screen with the LG logo and it says "security error"

I've removed the battery and keeps repeating, any ideas?

I also held power and volume down to do a factory reset with no success

Does this mean all the Lucids got ICS at the same time?

You removed some vital app that the system checks for on boot. I have the LG Spectrum and we got that same security flag after removing too much bloat on our leaked ics.

Only way we were ever able to recover was with a .cab restore in download mode. I imagine u can do the same if u have your gb stock .cab file.

Also when we installed CWM recovery on ics, it nuke our 4g and erased the imei. I'm waiting for a replacement because of this. The .cab restore don't fix the 4g. It's was gone forever.

This rooting method does not work on ICS (4.0.4) AKA VS840ZV7 so if you have the latest software update you can't use this method. The ICS Root method is here:
***lg lucid ics root***
