Default Help with Rooting ZTE Merit (Z990G)

Hello everyone,
I have very unsuccessfully attempted to root my ZTE Merit Z990G. It appears to be similar enough to the ZTE Avail Z990 that I would assume I could ask for help here.

I have tried all of the following on Windows 7 and Ubuntu 10.10:
SuperOneClick with Zergrush (gets stuck at Step 7), psneuter (stuck at Step 5), and Motofail (stuck at Step 5)
z4root
Universal Androot
Manually pushing the files onto the phone via usb and Terminal (says it is a read-only file system)
Tried to do the T-Flash card as posted on this forum (verification check fails)
Tried the whole *983*7668# thing (gave me an error)
I cannot seem to find any custom rom or anything for this phone.

The details of the phone is:
Model Number: ZTE-Z990G
Android Version: 2.3.5
Baseband Version: Z990B01
Kernel Version: 2.6.35.7-perf+zte-kernel@Zdroid-SMT
Build Number: Z990GV1.0.0B05
Hardware Version: p5pb

Is there anything I can do to root this phone? Thank you much for your help.
Sincerely,
Patrick M.

Don't push the call button when you use the *983 code, just let it run.

I've tried both pushing the call button and letting it sit for about 20 minutes. Am I doing it correct by opening Dialer, typing in the code, and letting it sit or did I miss a step?

I let it set and no notification pops up at all. I tried a running the su updater thing in SuperUser and it fails. From the Market, I downloaded a tool to install the Busybox, and after I ran and hit install, it fails.

Yeah, I noticed that you posted about the same problem, tho I wasnt sure if you had tried the exact same things. I really hope we can figure this out. I mean, theres no excuse for a 150mb internal storage limit with nearly all of it gone to bloatware that will never be used and cant be uninstalled.

I don't know why Android devices have these silly limits at all. I had an Archos tablet that was just as bad, and I had to root it to get full functionality out of it. I don't understand why they put such ridiculous caps on things, that requires breaking your warranty to fix. I guess I just have trouble understanding how the developers of so many phones, think that such a small app partition is acceptable.

Exactly. I mean, to be honest, I've never once heard of ZTE until a few days ago when we switched from Sprint to Straight Talk after not wanting to deal with Asurion for replacing my phone. I had a Razr VE20 Vegas and was very satisfied save for how the vibrate went out and then so did the charging port on the phone itself. Now I got this phone and service, and it has so much more potential, but is MAYBE a hair above the capabilities of my old Razr. That's really sad.

The Avail has 211mb open in an otherwise empty partition (the /dev partition). This partition has 32kb of files in it... I modified an existing script to move the Dalvik cache to this empty area (but I haven't assembled an update package yet). This can free up the /data partition immensely. One downside to this script is that you can no longer reboot normally (boot into recovery and wipe the dalvik first), and the boot image I've been working on should solve this by having the system automatically move the cache without using a script.

I would assume that youd have to be root in order to move the Dalvik cache, but as soon as the Merit can be rooted, I will surely be doing that.

Should the tcard flash wipe the phone back to factory defaults? Or will all my stuff remain, just with a new kernel?

I am sorry for my absence. I am not sure what happens to the data. I think if its on an SD card it is fine, but I am not sure about the settings/apps/pics/etc on the internal memory. I know from flashing other equipment everything gets erased, but this is my first actual smartphone, so I have no idea. If its supposed to wipe anything, perhaps it fails because it is the file for the Z990 (Avail), not the Z990G (Merit). Perhaps we can contact ZTE for the Z990G file?

My experience with flashing, also, has always resulted in a system wipe. When I apply the flash, the status bar goes all the way to the end then reboots. It is possible that it pops up an error code, but it's so fast I can't tell. When the phone reboots, everything seems to be the same. This is why I question whether or not the flash even took. Regardless, the 983 codes still do nothing.

It's a shame that their website doesn't list the Merit. You'd think they would list all their models, and not just some of them. This could very well be the reason for it not working.

Thanks for all your help, though.

Has there been any progress whatsoever on this? This is the only thread I've been able to find on the phone and specifically, rooting it. I'd really like to be able to use my phone for more than 3 apps, since I can't even download anything with these bloatware files taking up everything. I can't root it to make a new partition with any of the solutions for the avail. So I'm hoping someone's figured something out...

If there is any way I could be of assistance, I will gladly do so. I am really desperate to get this thing hacked so I can unlock its full potential. If anyone has anything they want me to try, do send me a message.

i'm finding conflicting info on here from different threads

some say the have got it rooted, others say no.

but some never specify i they actually have the Straight Talk ZTE Merit, or if they have the ATT ZTE Avail

even though they are the mostly the same phone, they are not exactly alike.

someone who has the ZTE Merit on Straight Talk wireless, please chime in if you have it rooted.

I did the pull from my phone One question before I post it. Does the pull contain just the system firmware, or everything including my personal data.

I would be interested in looking at this phone, if anyone can give me remote access (teamviewer/ssh) I believe I could leave them with root when done.

Yes all are listed, but you have to have adb installed and working on your PC. I do not have nor know how to use Windows, so I can't help with it if you are on Windows, but I am sure others are familiar with getting adb working with ZTE on windows.

They are generic, as long as you have adb installed.

The first command "adb shell" will put you into a shell on your phone, so the commands are actually ran on the phone.

To run ADB on windows:

1. Open the command prompt (Windows button+r > cmd). Some drivers uploaded by the phone contain adb, or you can download android SDK.

2. cd to the location of your adb.exe "program". (ex.C:\Windows>cd c:\users\yourname\android-sdk)

3. Type "adb" and it should bring up your options used within adb.

someone who has the ZTE Merit on Straight Talk wireless, please chime in if you have it rooted.
Mine is a merit St phone I used Jcase how2 using adb.
That was the only How2 that worked correctly for me.

Note: if you had unsuccessfully attempt to root to fail with any of the 1 click scripts.
You will need to do a factory reset then run jcase how2 in adb

3. Type "adb" and it should bring up your options used within adb.

Google SDK Tools. You will need to download & install it. Pay attention where you put it because that is the path you need to run cmd from.

What are you trying to do? What are the problems you are having? Let's make the answer for your problem.
