Before I continue..... Do not proceed if you are afraid of screwing up your device. If your try and sue me I will laugh at you.
First you will need the latest version of Odin.

Next you will need is the pda file.
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/7223192/RootSF/CWMRecovery_DJ05_DL09.tar.md5
This requires no root at all or any rom manager. After completing this you can install custom roms and many other things.
1. Open Odin
2. Select PDA
3. Find the downloaded pda file that is a .tar.md5
4. Plug your phone into your computer.
5. Take out your battery.
6. Hold down the home button
7. Your phone should be at a black and yellow screen that says download.
8. Click Start
9. Let your phone reboot. (it will take its time)
10. Now that it has booted up pull out the battery.
11. Hold down both the volume buttons and the power button.
12. Release the power button but hold the volume buttons when the Samsung screen pops up.
12. Select apply sdcard update.zip

Reason: Links
point 5 en 10 both mention taking out the battery. I didn't know there were 2 batteries
furthermore, point 11 "Hold down both the volume buttons", it's either vol-down for downloadmode or vol-up for recovery mode. So which one to use, I believe you ment recovery-mode?
Better news,
this really worked for me.
Everywhere you read about needing the clockworkmod (cwm) but almost never how to get it. If you have it, you can easily load unsigned ROM's.
Just download 'ROM Manager by ClockworkMod' and install it.
In the app you got the first option saying 'install cmw', it will do it for you.
Then shutdown you phone.
Press vol-up + start/home + power button.
when booting up, let go the powerbutton, but keep the vol-up and home pressed.
Then you get the recovery menu including option to boot from an update.zip from your internal sd card.
There is a way to go back to the Mesmerize Stock. You will not have to reactivate your phone.
If you would like i can post the links and tell you how to get back to stock. Just let me know.

you would want to go into recovery mode. For some reason on my mesmerize I have to hold both volume up and volume down.
I tried flashing this to my mesmerize, but when i selected boot from update.zip, it says the directory cannot be found. Is the only for a stock mesmerize phones? If it helps, im running the EA11 kernel on Froyo. Thanks!

Do you have the update.zip file in the root directory of your SD card? I have not been able to get CWM working correctly on my EA11 Froyo build, either. I can't get ODIN to recognize my phone any more, either.

No matter what recovery = try I get that stupid fastboot bluescreen and have to do battery pull! I've flashed clockwork, amonra 1.2.5 zip, tried quickboot app, phone+menu+end an get same bluescreen!
I mean, my phone is working okay but this recovery thing is really buggin' me! Any help or advice greatly appreciated. ---Rock on!

That is the download mode. Search the XDA threads on how to reboot the phone into that mode.
You should be able to do it by holding down the volume down button and power button at the same time while rebooting the phone. Turn off the phone, turn it on, hold down the down volume and power button, then plug in the USB cable. iirc

What about using ClockworkMod's ROM Manager? That doesn't have a specific Mesmerize recovery mode, but it does have the Fascinate, which is similar. Would that work?
EDIT: I tried this. It most certainly did NOT work.
DO NOT TRY TO USE ROM MANAGER TO ADD CWM!!!

OK this whole thread is overly complicated.
all you need is Odin and the cwm4 fixed for cm7 file.
to get to download mode you plug the USB cable into the phone and then hold down the vume down button until the yellow download screen comes up.
to get to recovery you simultaneously hold (yes) volume up AND down and power buttons. this is called the three button method. THREE buttons, that's where it gets its name from!!!!!!!
there is detailed instructions in this thread for getting cwm4 on your phone. Samsung Mesmerize Battery Life??????
