Rooted the phone last friday night. Had to go back to Froyo than install a rooted version of Gingerbread.
only tried 1 ROM so far but it's one that removed a bunch of the crapware from the US Cell build. Things like City ID and Allshare are now gone.
It didn't make a huge difference is remaining room about 400 megabyte more than stock but still room that was recovered and removal of stuff I never used.
Voodoo lagfix is built into it as well.
The best thing is I also installed the ICS style unlock screen. It allows you to unlock to main screen, messaging, phone and camera.
No more multi clicks to get the most used features.
