Post ~*{must read}*~ sign a metro pcs petition!

Metro PCS 3G/4G Speeds suck?

Then lets do something about it!!!

Quote:
Metro's 3G is capped at 1x speeds and their 4G is capped at real 3g speeds.
Lets ALL sign this petition HERE and then file a complaint with the Better Business Bureau® HERE so the BBB will take action and have Metro PCS uncap our speeds, or lower our prices.

When you file your complaint with the BBB make sure you mention the fact that "Metro's 3G is capped at 1x speeds and their 4G is capped at real 3g speeds" so they get the picture that Metro is making false Advertisements!

WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR?
CHINA TO TAKE OVER THE WORLD?!
GO SIGN THE PETITION
AND FILE A COMPLAINT!

All pre paid services are like this. It comes with the territory of being pre paid. You cant have your cake and eat it too. It's not false advertising because the 4G is on the 4G network. Just because the speeds aren't up to par with standard 4G, doesn't mean it should be labled 3G. 4G and 3G are different networks so it's not false advertising. 4G can have speeds similar to that of 1X but STILL be labled as 4G because it's on the 4G network. So why would I complain about that? I can't complain about an already great and cheap service. To boycot, petition and complain about that is like little Veruca Salt wanting a "Golden Goose NOW"!!!!!

Regardless, I pay $40 a month, which is about half of what the top 4 providers charge and that doesn't even include "unlimited calls or text" with them. So for me to complain that I'm not getting the same service that is offered for double the price elsewhere, would be selfish, ignorant and "spoiled" of me.

For $40 a month on a PRE PAID service, I expect to get my moneys worth. Unlimited Calls, Unlimted Text, Unlimited Long Distance, Unlimited 4G with 100MB of "streaming" data alloted for the month..................

I would say that is WELL WROTH my $40 I pay a month.

In the end, if you don't like them, your not bound by them. (Oh yeah, another perk.) So you can leave anytime you want to and go pay that $80 a month for faster 4G, 900 minutes a month, 2GB of Data and unlimited text ALL bound by a 2 year contract. Yeah......................you can have that.

It's like getting a "Buy 1 get 1 free" coupon and complaining to the business of said coupon that it's not "buy 1 get 2 free".

Or calling Burger King and bitching cause their "King Size" on a combo isn't big enough.

My data usage never moves. Never. Watching videos on YouTube or listening to pandora which would be considered streaming, never takes away from my usage. If i were to move to the 250 it would be gone in a week judging by my data usage app. The new plans are in no way shape or form better than the old plans for that reason right there. All that extra garbage that comes with those higher plans is all useless to me, which is why i went to the $40 plan in the first place. Luckily i made the switch before the "new"plans went into affect.

I give metro an A for effort on trying to get me to switch though. Lol. Saying "you will have more data to use blah blah blah". I said check my usage meter and tell me if i need more data. Lol Morons.

I dunno... people (like myself) hear "4G" and expect 4G... especially when it's promised, and I pay for that service, and expect to get what I paid for - not 3G or 1X. I didn't sign up for that. lol
I think it IS false advertisement.

Case in point - I advertise a Porsche for sale in the paper, and some guy bought it. He drives it home, and is disappointed by it's lack of performance.
After he gets home, he lifts the hood and finds that it's NOT a Porsche, but a fiberglass kitcar built on a VW.
He brings it back, and I tell him to eat his buyer's remorse. "Sorry pal"

Am I guilty of false advertisement? I think so, and I'm sure anyone else would too. How is what Metro is doing any different from that scenario?
They promise 4G, and yet they don't deliver 4G - it's 3G speed at best for most of us. You don't find that out until you buy the service.

Granted, it IS on a 4G network... but I expected 4G to be 4G... not 3G on a 4G network. (if ya know what I mean)
Of course, some will say that I'm just picking fly crap out of pepper, but still... I know I can't be the only one that feels this way about it.

You make some good points Fuzz... and I agree with you on most of them - but I still say we should get what we paid for, and I didn't pay for 3G speeds.
I was told by Metro that it was 4G that I'd be getting if I bought that plan.

And so, I call BS on Metro.

Good points.

But. There's always a but right? Lol

There's no "standard" for what 4G speeds are supposed to be. You can't base it of the top 4 because they are all different. You can't base it on the top 3 pre paid companies because they are all different.

So without a standard you can't say this 4G isn't fast enough. Well fast enough compared to what? To the companies mentioned earlier that will cost you double every month?

Want to know what REAL false advertising is? This is where your Porsche analogy would work.
ATT iphone 4s has the 4g data icon instead of the 3g icon, leading one to believe that their iphone has 4g when in reality it doesn't. ATT says that it operates on the 4g network. How so when the actual phone isn't 4g capable? That is false advertising

But i go back to "if you don't like it, drop it". Im not saying that in a rude way mind you, just saying it in general. Luckily we don't have that ugly contact over our head and we can walk when we want to

You get what you pay for and i for one am very happy with what i get with what i pay.

I wish I could feel that way.
But not everyone gets the same speeds... it differs from area to area. In my neck of the woods, it is BARELY faster than 1x.

25% of the time is it even close to 3G speeds.
I have the $60 plan, and yet 75% of the time, I get the same speed that many do on 1X. It's great that you're happy with your service... but false advertisement is NOT cool for a business to get away with. It hurts us ALL in the end - especially if they continue to get away with it.

This now is a whole different story. I get 1.5mb at my house. If i get into Atlanta which is 10 miles away or so, it jumps up to 5.0 plus.

So while i do agree that the speeds aren't "normal"when compared to the top 4, the coverage and location has a great impact on that.

But I'll be honest. When i got the galaxy indulge back in December ish, my house was literally on the 4g line from which i didn't get 4g until i drove about 2 miles into the 4g coverage area. My work was way outside the coverage area so i was in 1x ALL the time. January they expanded the lines and not only did i start getting 4g at my house, i also started getting it at my work. I was extremely happy to say the least. I then bought the esteem and I've been happier than a fat pig in a mud puddle in the middle of summer.

So i do get your frustration. But if you really wanted faster speeds, wouldn't you already have switched to one of the top 4? Like i said, to me it's all about what i get for what i pay compared to the greedy corporate top 4. And to me, it's well beyond worth it

Good point. The now $40 4G plan is still unlimited web at 4G speeds up to 250 MB, which includes streaming multimedia, surfing at approximately 5 pages of web, 1 full track download. After the 250 MB cap, you'll still have unlimited web at "reduced" 4G speeds. That's good that you're grandfathered in cus your plan is unlimited data at 4G speeds all the way and you're only counted for streaming at 100 MB.

That's good that you're grandfathered in cus your plan is unlimited data at 4G speeds all the way and you're only counted for streaming at 100 MB.
Yup. I have no reasons to EVER switch my plan so Ill be on this plan until I leave Metro.

I have the $60 plan, and yet 75% of the time, I get the same speed that many do on 1X. It's great that you're happy with your service... but false advertisement is NOT cool for a business to get away with. It hurts us ALL in the end - especially if they continue to get away with it.

Exactly.
Depending on location, all of the other major carriers have spots with even worse service...at much higher prices to boot.

Now, the direction of our wrath should be directed at our big government for not following Europe and Asia's lead re controlling broadband and cellular--
these should've been classified as essential...like utilities...that all must have(at sufficiently high levels to ensure we kept our former worldwide educational & technological advantages).

And for permitting 'everyone to use false advertising and/or steal'.

From the backdating of options for company insiders,
to the financing of a retirement account/vehicle/credit card/ simple bank account,
to the way public sector employees get to calculate their yearly retirement pension: pad their very last year of work with insane overtime & add to it all everyday expenses / kitty cash + unused yearly sick time of as much as 1to2 months a year to come up with an insane yearly guaranteed package of tens of millions dollars(given expected length of life expectations).

it's like it's ok for all businesses to lie, cheat and steal-- with almost zero repercussions...but let them catch a lone employee embezzling thousands, and they'll spend millions to prosecute and incarcerate--spending ten times on the penal system as on the educational system...
and why wasn't i lucky enough to be seduced by one of my teachers

ehh, life sucks and then you die....

If you want to do something useful to try and get Metro to change. Switch services. The problem of course is that marketers have usurped the term "4g" as being "faster than what we were previously offerring" as opposed to "the next generation of network technology and standards". If you really want 4g speeds, to bad you can't have them as 4g is actually defined as >100Mb/s and currently none the current technology can achieve that except maybe in lab conditions (not sure but perhaps even then).

Personally I believe it is T-mobile who broke the 4g term by touting HSPA+ (a 3g technology) as 4g (granted it matches and even exceeds the speeds offered by other carriers). So if you want to accuse anyone of false advertising - start with them. Ironically MetroPCS is actually using 4g technology and meets the marketing definition of "faster than what we were previously offering". Granted other services are faster but that isn't what they are advertising.

As I said, if your not happy with MetroPCS suck it up and pay more with one of other services. Heck you don't even need to do that. There are a lot of carriers now that can offer services comparable (and possibly better) to Metro. Personally I am considering switching (because I'm in a new office that is a Faraday cage to Metro) to Straight Talk (because I can bring almost any GSM phone to them) or Ting.com (because I really like their innovative pricing model and features). The only thing holding me back is I can't afford the phones I want to switch right now.

Yup.

I look at it like this. From metro to go from a carrier in only a few select markets in metro areas in 2001 to where they are at now, i think they have covered a lot of ground.

From which I'm sure some of us have witnessed it first hand and been along for the ride

Plus i go back to this. I pay 40 bucks. I can't expect the world. But I'm happy so my expectations are null.

I'd be happy if they could push the signal into the building I work in (which is the only portion of the complex I am guaranteed to lose signal in). I recently was moved into this building and I feel so cut off.

i got a bit of something about them upgrading their network here:
MetroPCS profit beats Street, shares up 34 percent | Reuters

Quote:
METROPCS UPGRADE
MetroPCS revenue for the second quarter rose 6 percent to $1.28 billion, above analyst expectations of $1.26 billion.
Also on Thursday MetroPCS said it expects a network upgrade for high-speed wireless services to be almost complete by the end of the current quarter.
At the end of the second quarter, the company said, about 8 percent of its subscribers were using its so-called fourth generation high-speed service, which is based on a technology known as Long Term Evolution.
The company's service revenue rose 4 percent to $1.16 billion for the quarter. Quarterly average revenue per user was $40.62, up 13 cents from a year earlier.
MetroPCS posted a net subscriber loss of 186,000 in the second quarter. Analysts had been expecting its subscriber numbers to fall by 94,000 to 174,000, according to four analysts contacted by Reuters.
The company said it expects to boost subscriber growth with 4G LTE For All, a line of affordable 4G LTE smartphones it plans to launch in the second half of 2012.
"During the fourth quarter, we expect our 4G LTE For All initiative to lead to a return to subscriber growth," Chief Executive Roger Linquist said in a statement.
Churn -- or customer defection rate -- fell by half a percentage point to 3.4 percent for the quarter.
MetroPCS shares rose to $8.56 on New York Stock Exchange on Thursday. The shares had lost about 44 percent of their value since the February report on the failed Sprint deal.

take another look..

Quote:
It revealed that it now has 700,000 LTE subscribers, up from the 580,000 present in March and that it plans to have a full 10MHz of spectrum allocated for the super-fast mobile standard in "most major metropolitan areas" by the end of the year.
now maybe giving us a full 10 mhz of spectrum will equate to 10mbps downloads but mhz and mbps are two different things.

Metro primarily is using its existing AWS (1.7/2.1 GHz) and PCS (1.9 GHz) spectrum. That required to MetroPCS to split capacity between CDMA and LTE, resulting in slower LTE speeds. The average download speed reported was around 1000 kbps, or 1mbps, outside major cities with approximately 200 milliseconds of latency. MetroPCS has 1.4 MHz, 3 MHz and 5 MHz downlink carriers, though most of its markets utilize a full 5 MHz-by-5 MHz carrier where new AWS spectrum is available. So being that the main actual 4g speeds I've seen have been 1.3, 3.2 and 5.0mb, i would say we can assume that 10mhz will translate into a MAXIMUM of 10 mb. Generally the fastest speeds right now, 5mb on average, is generally achieved closer to the major city which for me is Atlanta while as you get further out, it obviously drops down. I'm 10 miles south of Atlanta and i get 1.3 consistently. With that said i will not see 10mb unless I'm in Atlanta but i should at least just break the 5mb mark.

Yes mhz and mb are two different things as i never stated otherwise. But going off of the data, is safe to assume that we will see a max of around 10mb. Will everyone get 10 mb? No. Does everyone get 5 mb now? No. Only the lucky ones.

Right, metro is raising the ceiling. Even if I don't get 10mbps I hope the mhz increase gives the 4G signal better penetration and reliability. I don't get a signal at all in church and its less than 10 miles from the city.

Yeah im in the same boat. I wish i was in the city so i could get the 5mb but I'm sure metro will push its coverage out further as time goes. Hell just 6 months ago my house and job want even inside the 4g coverage and now it's well within it. Metro will move forward, i have faith.

But yeah hopefully raising the ceiling will make the speeds consistent throughout instead of 1.3 to 5mb. Hell an average of 3 everywhere would be better. We shall see. I'm not going anywhere. My 40 bucks a month is well spent. Lol
