There was an app for this too. I remember checking this on my Optimus M and there wasn't carrier IQ at that point.

I would believe carrierIQ would be installed is the system partition so to check would need root

I won't buy any phone that has Carrier IQ installed. In the past I actually returned a phone from another carrier because the device had Carrier IQ installed. I currently have the LG Motion 4G and it doesn't have Carrier IQ installed. There's several applications in the Play Store that can be installed such as Carrier IQ Detector that will tell you if a device has Carrier IQ installed or not.

metropcs doesnt and has never used carrieriq. most carriers have since stopped using it
