To unlock a device is to allow it to go to other carriers.

To "root" your phone essentially means to give yourself superuser access on it. This is like being the highest level of administrator for the device. This allows you to change the interface of your phone. You can also download "rooted only" applications for use on the device which will let you do thing with the phone you couldn't normally. A "Root" in general is the most basic directory in a system. For instance the Root of your computer most likely is the "C:" drive. Their also happens to be a "Root" of your smartphone, which is what is manipulated in order to achieve a "rooted" phone and its benefits. More info on root can be found in the first post of this thread in the heading called General Information.

So I'm trying to root my s4 right now. I am running the latest update on 4.3 just to let you know. I also want to get CM 11 running on this too. Has anyone else been successful at doing this and would like to help me out?

You will need to install a custom recovery of your choice, if you haven't already. Check the first post of this thread under Recovery to choose one and follow their directions to install it.

The link to CM 11 that works for our device is also on the first post of this thread under (Tmobile) M919 4.4 ROMs.

Downloads for CM 11 are on the second post. Download the cm-11-20140108-UNOFFICIAL-jfltetmo.zip rom zip and the GAPPS package below it and put them on the SD card of your phone. Reboot to your recovery and perform a factory reset, then flash first the rom zip, then the gapps zip, one after the other. After flashing those two files, reboot and give the system up to 5 min to boot up.

Oh, and once you get CM 11 to boot up you'll need to setup the network stuff to get data working (at least, that's how it was the last time I tried it).

Good luck...let us know how it works out.

Alright so if I just follow your instructions for downloading twrp I will be rooted with a recovery right? Then I know you put the rom and gapps on your phone and flash them in the right order. So before I do this I want to make sure is this right. And if I use the t mobile rom nothing will go wrong with this?

Yea you got it. You said you were already trying root, did you use the odin auto root method?

Every device is different but that's how I did it. Most Tmobile roms work with our device. The two carriers phones are almost identical. the roms listed in the first post I flashed myself and it worked.

Alright I did everything but when I click Start in Odin in the message box it says <OSM> All threads completed. (succeed 0 / failed 1) and the instructions say it should reboot on its own but nothing is happening.

Try downloading and flashing the older version, 2.6.3.0 instead of 2.6.3.1.
or
Go to playstore and download goo manager and install twrp with that.

Restart the phone and hold the home button and volume up till you see the Samsung logo.

I just took all that time to take the picture but it won't let me post it. It's too big or something about the quality but I think I need another type of recovery because this is weird.

Try the flashing the 2.5.0.2 version of TWRP before going to another recovery. Ive got TWRP and i havent had any issues.

I really wish i could get a pic of what ur seeing. Try installing TWRP with goo manager. If that doesnt work, try another recovery. Install goo manager then tap the menu button and select install open recovery script and do what it says.
