Motorola DROID is one of the hottest mobile phones currently available on the market with Google's Android operating system on board. The handset arrived on the market back in November on Verizon's airwaves, and rapidly became one of the most popular phones around, even if it was not packing the highest available hardware specifications.
In the meantime, another Android-based device emerged, the Nexus One by HTC, which boasts a 1GHz Snapdragon processor from Qualcomm inside, and which has all chances to dethrone DROID from its leading position, yet enthusiasts seem determined to prevent that from happening. The guys over at AllDroid are included in this category, especially one user who managed to overclock DROID to up to 1.1GHz.
This is certainly not something that one should do at home, since there are great chances that something will go terrible wrong and the handset will be damaged. However, since this guy did it, and successfully, it seems, others also gave it a try, only to find out that DROID's processor can reach 1.1GHz in speed, but that it is quite stable only at a slower speed.
The Android-based mobile phone was tested at lower clock speeds too, and, while the 800MHz is said to be the most stable one, it did quite well at higher speeds too: “850MHz - 6.76 Mflops/s linpack, 3395 on BenchmarkPi; 900MHz - 7.646 Mflops/s on linpack, 3054 on BenchmarkPi; 990MHz - 8.367 Mflops/s on linpack, 2695 on BenchmarkPi; 1GHz - 2661 on BenchmarkPi; 1.1GHz - 9.254 Mflops/s on linpack.”
Those of you who would like to learn more details on the overclocking of DROID and on the findings should head over to this forum thread for that. As stated above, you should not go for it unless you know what the process implies, for the consequences might be unpleasant in the end. However, if you do want to try it out, just make sure you backup all your data before proceeding, so that no important files are lost.
I think I may well try nudging it to 800mhz when I root, if that seems to be stable!

not possible on the milestone due to motorola locking down the bootloader which in turn means no custom roms. And you need a custom rom to enable overclocking over 550mhz

Eh... so the Milestone cannot be rooted like the Droid, in the same way? I don't understand why they would be different...
Has anyone tried to overclock the milestone? DOes it works like for droid?
Your impression on it?
I tried also ...unfortunately on Milestone you can only under-clock...you can set you CPU from 250 to only 550 Mhz. To bypass the 550 MHz you need a custom ROM and this is not yet available for Milestone.
To the mot_boot_mode file, (the app places overclock.ko in /data/data/pt.com.darksun.milestoneoverclock/files/overclock.ko, I haven't tried changing this to reflect the default location)
But if that scares you, dont try it unless you're confident. Personally, I like not having itset on boot, but that just me, but I figured I would at least confirm that it works.
Also, where i did say i was running at 1.2Ghz, That was purely to see the extremes of effects on battery life and tempterature. Now, i'm running it at 800Mhz happily, And ive found 1000Mhz to be wonderfully smooth.
I remember reading that the OMAP3430 chip in the phone is designed for and tested up to 800Mhz, but remember, any boost in Voltage, and to a lesser degree, frequency, WILL lower cpu life.
I recommend using SetCPU (or similar) in conjunction to this, as it allows quite a lot more control with the profile settings and such but it isn't strictly necessary, For example, right now, i run at 800Mhz only when plugged in, and whilst not sleeping, Which essentially has no effect on batterylife in the long run whilst still giving me performance at home/in the car. If you use setCPU, be sure to autodetect settings (via menu key), and adjust profiles if necessary whenever you change Max clock

I'm gonna try this overclocking.... but what does Jontyyab mean when he says that it must be reloaded/set on boot...and do we still need to have SetCpu installed also ?
Custom ROMs are mostly for replacing kernels/updating them. The current Linux kernel on the Milestone is 2.6.29 while the latest kernel on Froyo if I'm not mistaken is 2.6.33/2.6.34.
The 2.6.34 kernel could just be Cyanogen's updated kernel for Froyo.
The Motorola Milestone is the equivilent to the US's Motorola Droid with some minor software changes. As the Droid has, the Motorola features some great specs including a solid feel chassy, 5 MP camera with auto-focus and geo-tagging, a respons... Read More
