Default ***RESURRECTED*** [HOW TO] Root+ Extras Telus Motorola Milestone

There used to be a dedicated Thread for Telus Motorola Milestone on the Alldroid.org forum. Unfortunately the owner of the forum closed the site and deleted all of the old posts. (it has been re-opened but all old threads were lost) I spent a couple hours to recover the old thread before its lost forever. I believe since this information was contributed by multiple members, it belongs to the community and should be made available to everyone on a reliable forum. So I decided to repost it on androidforums. I have also included all 12 pages 114 posts from the original thread in txt format <attached below> for those that want to dig in deeper in finding an answer to a question they may have. I found this info extremely helpful and I hope others find it just as helpful.
* The only credit I take is re-posting this information. I did not put this together, nor did I write any of the How Tos.

Enjoy!

there is a telus nandroid backup now for those of you who think rooting with that will not void warrenty. it still will, this method still works, and my phone ran flawlessly when i had it with all the stuff in this thread.
had not a single problem with any of it. but if you search youll find the telus firmware dealio. i sold my milestone awhile back i can no longer test things thats why there hasnt been updates ect.. but as far as im concerned this method works fine.

just a note:
before rooting this way, my phone would random restarts and was sluggish, after this i rarely if ever got any random reboots that werent my fault. i ran at 500/550 on setcpu *cant overclock but u can bring the lower end up to par* so it ran alot smoother even with livewallpapers running.

all of this comes from a couple forums + different threads, thought it would be easier to have it all here in 1 post and in the first/second post of the thread instead of sorting through 28 pages trying to find all the info you needed.
that being said, if you notice anything wrong or something isnt right, pm me or @JamieD81 twitter me and i will fix it or help you the best i can.

before you start, i notice this thread is being linked on a bunch of sites, which will bring people that arent fully aware of the dangers and difficulty of some of the things in this thread, please PLEASE PLEASE read very carefully and make sure this is something you want to do, because there is NO going back at this point, we do NOT have a telus/canadian SBF to fall back on. So with that being said, if you feel like you want to dive into this, be very carefull and READ EVERYTHING FULLY! DO NOT SKIP ANY STEPS

WINDOWS 7 USERS READ THIS

I used RSDLite 4.5.5 and changed the Compatibility Mode to Windows Vista SP2 and ran in Administrator Mode. That went off without a hitch.

!!!!READ INSTRUCTIONS FULLY BEFORE YOU JUMP IN!!!!

now that you have all those files downloaded..

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Step 2: Unzip the Brazilian SBF

Step 6: Hit START then wait, your phone will reboot during this prossess dont worry if it shuts off.
Step 7: after its done phone should boot up and look like normal no file/data loss.

after this you will notice some difference's such as new Camera App *faster then telus but i just dont like it so i have the telus camera.apk we
will install later on.

now for the root.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Installing Root *update.zip*::

Step 1: Rename Milestone_root.zip to Update.zip and copy it to the root of your SDcard.
Step 2: Turn off the phone
Step 3: With camera and power button pressed and hold, boot the phone. you will see a /\, at this point slide the phone open and hold volume UP then press Camera button a menu will come up.
Step 4: With DPad select apply sdcard:update.zip
Step 5: reboot phone and you will have SuperUser Whitelist amung other root goodies..

congrats you now have ROOT on your telus milestone *not to be mistaken with full root with bootloader ect.. as thats still LOCKED!

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

now onto some extra's that i KNOW you all want and maybe some you dont just skip them if you dont.

since your rooted and everything SHOULD be going well. go to marketplace and download "Terminal Emulator" *i suggest ADB shell but if you
like typing on your ugly milestone keyboard im not going to stop you.

Installing Live Wallpapers/Browser fix/Flac support::

Download these 2 files::
BROWSER FIX:
MEGAUPLOAD - The leading online storage and file delivery service
Flac/LWP/Scroll Fix:
http://rapidshare.com/files/35969519...U2_02.01.0.zip

step 1: extract flac_sf_lwu2_02.01.0.zip
step 2: extract the browser and place the browser.apk in the ocflac folder
step 3: place ocflac folder on the ROOT of your sdcard
step 4: follow the next instructions to the T.

From adb shell or terminal on the phone do:

YOU NEED SDK FOR ADB SHELL!

backup: *this will backup all the files incase you need to revert back*

mkdir /sdcard/ocflacbackup
cp /system/framework/framework.jar /sdcard/ocflacbackup
cp /system/lib/libmediaplayerservice.so /sdcard/ocflacbackup
cp /system/lib/libopencore_player.so /sdcard/ocflacbackup
cp /system/lib/libRS.so /sdcard/ocflacbackup
cp /system/lib/librs_jni.so /sdcard/ocflacbackup
cp /system/app/Browser.apk /sdcard/ocflacbackup

modification (system is mtdblock6 on European phones, use cat /proc/mtd if you are not sure):
**should be mtdblock6**

su
mount -o remount,rw /dev/mtd/mtdblock6 /system
cp -f /sdcard/ocflac/framework.jar /system/framework
cp -f /sdcard/ocflac/libFLAC.so /system/lib
cp -f /sdcard/ocflac/libmediaplayerservice.so /system/lib
cp -f /sdcard/ocflac/libopencore_player.so /system/lib
cp -f /sdcard/ocflac/libRS.so /system/lib
cp -f /sdcard/ocflac/librs_jni.so /system/lib
cp -f /sdcard/ocflac/LiveWallpapers.apk /system/app/
cp -f /sdcard/ocflac/LiveWallpapersPicker.apk /system/app/
cp -f /sdcard/ocflac/Browser.apk /system/app/
chmod 644 /system/framework/framework.jar
chmod 644 /system/lib/libFLAC.so
chmod 644 /system/lib/libmediaplayerservice.so
chmod 644 /system/lib/libopencore_player.so
chmod 644 /system/lib/libRS.so
chmod 644 /system/lib/librs_jni.so
chmod 644 /system/app/LiveWallpapers.apk
chmod 644 /system/app/LiveWallpapersPicker.apk
chmod 644 /system/app/Browser.apk
mount -o remount,ro /dev/mtd/mtdblock6 /system
reboot

this might take a bit to reboot i cant remember exactly but i dont think it was long.

after you reboot let it fully load and settle down, now hold on homescreen and select Wallpapers, you should now see Live Wallpapers
CONGRATS!

How To: interact with Live Wallpapers::

a quick note: if you want interactive live wallpapers *pressing on homescreen and having an action show* YOU NEED TO INSTALL 2.1 Launcher2.apk
this can be found in alot of places and installed as any regular apk *BE AWARE IT IS BUGGY AND DOES CRASH*

New launcher that interacts with live wallpaper:
open market place and look for HelixLauncher download the first one not HelixLauncher 2*helix2 is ment for nexus one only*
in discription it will say its for 2.0 and it works for us too, very stable and nice launcher
and allows you to interact with live wallpapers!

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

How To: view 2.1 only apps in the marketplace::

now to trick your phone into thinking its a 2.1 by editing the build.prop so you can see 2.1 apps *livewallpapers* on the marketplace

THIS BUILD.PROP WAS EDITED BY ME TO ALLOW YOU TO VIEW 2.1 APPS IN MARKETPLACE

step 1: Download this file.
MEGAUPLOAD - The leading online storage and file delivery service
step 2: unzip file
step 3: place on the root of your SDcard
step 4: type these commands

use adb shell or terminal emulator:

su
cp /system/build.prop /sdcard/ocflacbackup
mount -o remount,rw /dev/mtd/mtdblock6 /system
cp -f /sdcard/build.prop /system/
chmod 644 /system/build.prop
mount -o remount,ro /dev/mtd/mtdblock6 /system
reboot

when your phone boots up open up marketplace and search for LWP NexusMod
you should see a result come up *DOWNLOAD IT BEST LWP ON THE MARKET*
*also buy the donate/paid version support the dev! has more features!*

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Installing BusyBox::

**NEW**

you can do it this way *or its been said u can download titanium backup and press "problems" and download
busybox that way* <-- i havent tested this

step 1: downoad busybox
**google busybox for android
step 2: extract the zip file and place in the root of your SDcard
step 3: open terminal emulator and type this out! *or if you have sdk use adb shell*

su
mount -o remount,rw -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock6 /system
cat /sdcard/busybox > /system/xbin/busybox && chmod 700 /system/xbin/busybox
sync
mount -o remount,ro -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock6 /system
reboot

EACH LINE YOU NEED TO TYPE FULLY OUT BEFORE PRESSING ENTER! including the && and > symbols!

congrats BUSYBOX!

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

How To: Free Extra Memory::

look under Settings>SD Card & phone storage> down at avalible space internal storage make note on how much is there.

step 1: download this file
attached at bottom of this thread
step 2: rename the file by deleting the .txt extention and leaving it blank! *should just be named "mot_boot_mode"*
step 3: place the file on the root of your SDcard
step 4: using terminal emulator or adb shell type these commands:

su
mount -o remount,rw /dev/block/mtdblock6 /system
cd /system/bin
cp mot_boot_mode mot_boot_mode.bin
rm mot_boot_mode
cp /sdcard/mot_boot_mode .
chown root.shell mot_boot_mode
chown root.shell mot_boot_mode.bin
chmod 755 mot_boot_mode
chmod 755 mot_boot_mode.bin
reboot

NOTE THE "." at the end of cp /sdcard/mot_boot_mode YOU HAVE TO INCLUDE THE "."

congrats you should have alot more free memory! now go back to Settings>SD card & phone storage> and see how much is avalible
i went from 45mb to 113mb

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Installing Stock Telus Milestone Apps::

ok one more thing, i HATED the camera app that came with the brazilian sbf so here is the telus one::

**NEW**

THIS WILL OVERWRITE THE BRAZILIAN ONE AND MAKE THE TELUS ONE STOCK
meaning when you click the camera button to open camera telus one will open up
*havent tested but source says it works!* good news for milestone owners that hate
the brazilian camera like i did*
this way will also back up the brazilian camera app to /sdcard/camerabak/ in case u want it again at some point.

step 1: download the apk
http://rapidshare.com/files/36214970...aMoto.zip.html
MIRROR MEGAUPLOAD - The leading online storage and file delivery service
step 2: place cameramoto.apk on root of sdcard
step 3: open terminal or adb shell and follow these commands

su
mount -o remount,rw -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock6 /system
mkdir /sdcard/camerabak/
cp /system/app/Camera.apk /sdcard/camerabak/Camera.apk.bak
cp -f /sdcard/CameraMoto.apk /system/app/Camera.apk
mount -o remount,ro /dev/mtd/mtdblock6 /system
sync
reboot

thanks again supermalloch!

done. back to the good camera/camcorder app!

more stock telus motorola milestone apps that were deleted during brazilian sbf!
Motonav apk
MotoCarDock apk
Launcher2 apk *buggy so use only if you want, allows interacting with live wallpaper*
Voice apk *voice search and txt from 2.1*

download this file and unzip it,
MEGAUPLOAD - The leading online storage and file delivery service <-- has the new files and removed old not working file.

place the apk files where-ever you place them on your sdcard, i have a folder named /apps where i store all mine.
now open astro or an apk installer, and go to where the apps are and install them as normal. again if a msg
pops up just click ok. if any of these give you an error "cant be installed" or anything like that let me know.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

you can now also open marketplace and download "Spare Parts" it unlocks some things that android never added to settings.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

if you have any questions please ask away, i will include instructions on how to do backups as soon as im instructed on how to do so.
i will add them to these instructions.

AGAIN THANKS GOES OUT TO EVERYONE WHO MADE ALL THIS POSSIBLE! sorry i didnt mention names as there are so many, if you want your name credited just let me know and ill throw it up!

also id like to add if you have ANY questions please ask, no one will make fun of you for the questions you ask, if you dont understand something ASK dont just go for it, no one in this thread will make fun of you or tell you to search google ect.. this thread is here to HELP people with this prossess, so if you have nothing good to say, please find another thread. i want everyone to feel comfortable to ask any questions about this that

!!!!HOW TO BACKUP AND RESTORE!!!!

YOU NEED SDK INSTALLED AND USE OF ADB COMMANDS!!!!
no terminal emulator for this.

download this:
http://alldroid.org/download/file.php?id=1481
unzip

put recovery folder + update.zip on root of sdcard
this means dont put the put_on_sd folder on your sdcard!
just recovery folder + update.zip

power phone down
power up while holding CAMERA
slide out keyboard
press and hold volume up, then press camera
press apply update.zip
press ok
let it run

now open CMD prompt as admin on your computer.
type these.

cd..
cd..
cd c:\ whereever your sdk is installed\tools <-- remember it cant have spaces AT ALL
mines at c:\android-sdk-windows\tools

ADB Shell
su
nandroid-mobile.sh --backup

name it something easy i used telus-backup
let it run its course.
press reboot phone now

and to restore just type this instead of --backup

nandroid-mobile.sh --restore
type telus-backup then enter.

YES you HAVE to apply the update.zip everytime you want to use ADBRecovery. so keep
it on the root of your sdcard, if you need to put another update.zip for some reason
on your sdcard, move the adbrecovery update.zip to another folder on sd then move back
to root when your done with the other update.zip

THANKS goes out to DAGr8 for helping me with this and pointing me in the right direction.

if you are applying a nandroid from the nandroid backup thread, make sure you put it in the right folder
before you try and restore it. and make sure its a 2.0.1 brazilian backup!!!!

here is a good source for sbf files if needed.

motorola_milestone:sbf [And Developers]

I heard that you get your telus phone rooted with 2.1 on the Thai sbf. However I heard that some had call quality issues. Please shed some light if you have rooted your phone with the 2.1 thai sbf.

OVERCLOCK Telus Motorola Milestone APP

Take a look at this:
http://code.google.com/p/milestone-overclock/

I have this installed and its working great on my milestone

To which file in Step 3 above that reads "Step 3: Run RSD ::RUN AS ADMIN, rightclick on the file and click run as admin::" do you refer?

I'm running Win 7 64-bit and I am the administrator. So is this a step I skip, or?

Thank you very much.
