How-To: Use the Sprint Update Utility for Flashing
We can now do partial flashes with the CL14 SBL.... If you have not had the CL14 official update yet, you can follow these steps to get it:
Remember... THIS WILL PUT THE CL14 BOOTLOADER ON YOUR PHONE!!!
What you need:
Sprints Update Utility
1. Create a datatool back-up.
2. Download and install Sprints Update Utility found above.
3. Run the program (now called SWUpdater) and follow all the directions until it says "Flash Downloading Complete".
Once you have the official CL14 update on your phone, or if you already had it, and you would like to flash SDX/Joey's Kernel (and Max's Recovery), follow the steps below.
What you need:
CL14 official update
An SDX/Joey's Kernel
Max's Recovery
1. Create a datatool back-up... (Although you most likely wont need it if you are just flashing a kernel.... But JUST in case, you should create a datatool back-up if you aren't confident that you wont wipe your data!)
2. After downloading and installing Sprints Update Utility, go into the binary folder (C:\Program Files\Samsung Electronics\SWUpgrade\Models\Binary) and move the CL14 file to a safe place, MAKE SURE IT IS NO LONGER IN THE BINARY FOLDER.
3. Find the Kernel you want to flash and put it in the binary folder.
Note: Now you should only have one file in the binary folder (the custom kernel). Also make sure that if the file you are putting into the binary folder says 7zip or winrar, extract it!! If you dont you will get the message "Cannot access bin folder!", and you will not be able to start the download.
4. On your desktop there should be a program named SWUpgrade. Run the program and follow all of the steps through the end. After every thing finishes successfully, you will end up with STOCK CL14, this includes the CL14 SBL, along with the custom kernel you put in the binary folder (you are root).
5. Double check that everything worked by going into Settings-About Phone, under BaseBand version you should see S:M900.8.0S.CL14, under Kernel version= 2.6.27 moment(at)momentdev, under Build number= Joey's name (or any other developer who's kernel you put in the binary folder).
6. Repeat steps 1-4, putting Max's recovery in the binary folder instead of the kernel.
7. You're all set.
(If you happen to want to flash one of Zefie's kernels, repeat steps 1-4 also.)
It wasn't a great thing to get the CL14 update before, because it was hard to obtain root. But now with Sprints Update Utility, and all the new kernels, we are able to get root with the CL14 SBL easily.

If you dont already have a custom kernel, i dont believe you can make a datatool back-up, but not 100% sure....
would love to get suggestions on files i should be using to do this - not sure which files are stable and which are going to brick my phone - just got it, dont want it to become a large paperweight

this is not working for me at all. i have reinstalled the swupdater 3 times and it keeps getting stuck on the install screen with ready in the square and in the lower corner it says [DEBUG]SETUP CONNECTION.

Sorry man, you're SOL. If you can't get it work that way then either:
1. Your USB cable is broken.
2. Your phone is broken.
3. Your software/drivers are corrupted.
4. Your an idiot.
ok, I didn't ask my question well...I try to extract the file I downloaded the .tar 7zip file but when it extracts, I get 3 files: logo.png, zImage, recovery.rfs The instruction I have said to drop the .tar file into the binary folder that I removed the cl14 from, but there is no tar file after the extract, only the 3 I list above. I just don't understand what I've done wrong.

does the file say .7zip? if not then its already extracted correctly.... i know joeys kernels come in the correct .tar form so there is no need to extract it...
If I go to properties it indicates that it's a zip file, however the file name is .tar I can drop the cl14 stock right back in and it runs fine, but I cannot get the update to intall with the zel14.tar it keeps saying cannot open bin file
I guess 3rd times a charm. I did the exact same thing, but on the 3rd try it took. So I'm now running zel14.3, but I have no idea what to do now. LOL Thanks for your help!
I just successfully flashed to Joey's latest kernel and then replaced it with Max's recovery 2.0. Everything worked great and my phone is the fastest it has ever been! BUT...why did I add Max's recovery 2.0? What does it do? My phone still says it is loaded with Joey's kernel (1.9). Someone please explain this to me.

max's recovery works when you reboot the phone and hold vol down, call, and end.
a recovery screen will pop up where you can backup your data (all your apps) and your system (all your stock apps) and then be able to restore those (so you don't have to go through the process of reinstalling everything).
hope that helps.

I have been trying to root my phone for the past week with no luck...
i have CL14 from sprint, dl'd the utility tool switched out the CL14 MR with the ZE14.3 .tar and i stay stuck forever in the ready screen... no laoding no nothing just after clicking start i get no feedback and stay waiting... am i doing something wrong?
like joeykrim told me. completely close out the utilitiy, follow the instructions to the letter and try it again and again. it took me 5 times but it finally took. also, it helped somehow, to remove the utility and re-dl from sprint.com.

Reason: to update...
what I found worked was manually deleting EVERYTHING samsung related from add/remove programs... after that, reboot the computer and install SWUpdate from sprint... then proceed to flashing with that program...
Well I got to work fairly easy. I've probably flashed my phone 50 times or more already messing around with different things. But the one thing I did notice while doing this is it didn't work right away. I tried a couple of times and still no good, it got stuck right away. So all I did was close out firefox and it worked like a charm. I remember reading something before on that so i tried it. Hopefully that helps.
Now for my Question:
I was running ze12.1 and I did a back up on the recovery page (vol down, call, end). I've had to restore before and it worked fine. Now after doing this it won't even show up in the restore files on recovery page. Running joey's 1.9.5 with max recovery2.0.
Is the back-ups different with the new recovery? Any suggestions would help and be greatly appreciated. Really don't wanna have to redo all my stuff again.
Ok, I got it to work, thank goodness. I just made a back up with the new recovery and compared the 2 back-ups on my sd card and they were named different. So all I did was rename my back up like the new one and it worked perfectly. Hope that helps anyone else that may run into that problem.
Two things I gotta say after installing the new kernal and update. 1 good and 1 bad.
Good: My phone is a lot faster now. It is great.
Bad: A lot less memory to start with. Before this it had 279mb now it has 216mb. That's quite a difference if you ask me. Not really a problem (yet anyway), but kind of disappointing.

OK- here is a neat little FYI for those of you that are having "impossible connection problems" while trying to update/flash/get the PC to recognize your phone...
ALWAYS CHECK THE USB CABLE!
lol, i know it sounds dumb... but I was having the worst time getting the thing to recognize my Moment... always getting "USB device failure" and "unrecognized device" errors. Went through a boatload of drivers, methods of installation etc... Finally, (as a last resort) i changed out the USB cable.. and all of a sudden, IT WORKS!
Testing later revealed that I indeed had a bad USB cable that would let it connect, and charge, but NOT COMMUNICATE! So, long story short, if you are having incredible problems like me, change out the cable and try again.
For those of you that want to go further, it can be easily enough checked with these tools: Digital Multimeter and a set of mirco-probes. (both acquired at "The Shack for around $30, if you don't already have a set) I am a technician by trade (past career) so I already had the equipment. You don't need the $300 Fluke meter to check continuity!
This is SPECIFICALLY for the MINI-USB cable, as some phones use the MICRO-USB cable, and is NYE impossible to test with out specialized equipment.
There's 4 pins, and a ground plane (the metal frame) on the USB side of the cable, and 5 pins, and a ground plane on the phone side of the cable. (4 data pins, and a ground pin that is tied to the ground plane) You simply stick a probe end on each pin on each side of the cable until you find continuity. (set the meter to the Ω symbol and watch for the display to reach 00.00 or as close as it gets. 00.02 is perfectly acceptable as "Continuity") repeat this on each set of connected pins. As you find the pairs, gently twist the cable back and forth and watch the display to rise, or go blank. This tells you that there is an intermittent/open (broken) connection. Time to replace the cable!
Hope this helps someone.. or is at least interesting to read!
Ok so i think i did something wrong. I just updated it this morning with the sprint update program. The reading a guide i found i tried to root it by using the odin 4.03 utility. Then i found bbygirl's guide on how to use the sprint utility. I was able to get to the part when you download tot he phone and it just sat at setting up connection. But i had already made it past the 2 other connection test parts. I read all the posts here and tried another 6 times. Then i though it might be something wrong with ZE14. So i downloaded joeykrim's and put that in the binary folder. That worked. Is their something wrong with the ZE14 build?
