Default Cannot find .jpg or .png! Help!

Hey guys...

I was trying to update to 2.1 using the Sprint update tool and it froze. I tried again and my phone is able to go into download mode, but it isn't recognized by the update tool. I also cannot boot my phone normally...I get "cannot find jpg or png"...Help? *stupid*

Okay two things. Double check that you only have the 2.1 tar file in the binaries folder(there can only be one file at a time in there

Okay when you get into Sprint Updater make sure you connect and disconnect USB cable and actually pull the battery like it says(seems that it matters with 2.1)
Once you hit start download you have to wait...it may look like it tried and stalled in .02 seconds but let it sit there and it will continue to download (may take 3 minutes total)

If you can get into Download mode you are fine and you have not bricked your phone--if this still does not work you are doing something wrong(don't take it personal--I had it happen to me and I was just too impatient) just go to a Sprint Store with a repair center (call ahead) and they will flash it for you back to CL14. Now they are using the same program that you are using so if they do it you know that you can too...

Best of luck, and let us know how it goes

I had the same problem and I flashed back to CL14 using the tool, then I flashed DD03.
I pulled the battery and let it sit for a minute. I'm not sure if that helped.

mine did this when i was updating to cl14. i freaked out and had sprint send me a replacement. while i was waiting on it, i decided "what the hell" and tried to load it again. it worked and my phone has worked fine ever since. just try booting in download mode and put it in again. recheck all your stuff and try one more time.

Hey guys! Thanks for all the responses. My laptop is running Windows 7, and the drivers were giving me all sorts of problems so I went and installed the updater on one of our Vista computers. It worked fine after that and I got myself back to CL14 and then 2.1 rooted, so it's all back to normal/better than before. Saved me a trip to Sprint tomorrow! :P

{Okay two things. Double check that you only have the 2.1 tar file in the binaries folder(there can only be one file at a time in there}

1. what is/ where is the binary folder?

2. I was using a windows vista computer to update to 2.1 after I installed SWUPgrade (for android 2.1). I had waited several minutes with zero upgrade occurred. I rebooted. Tried to restart phone (samsung moment) when I got the red-lettered/black background [cannot find jpg or png!].
Am I bricked? How do I proceed forward or backward? Just before I started the upgrade I had
s:m900.8.os.cj05. I noticed someone recovered back to a previous version above. Again how
would I get back to where I started or proceed forward?

The binary folder is on your computer, in the samsung folders where your installer (SWUPgrade) was installed to. I dont have the exact path handy, but its not hard to find. It holds the file that you are going to flash to. The new installer will only flash DE03, if you want to flash anything else you will need to use the CL14 installer, or revert it back manually.

After a battery pull, can you use the Volume Down, Camera and End Call button to get back to where you were when doing the update? If yes, I would say you are fine. If not, you might have a new paper wieght.

I continued to attempt to restart the update several times. Eventually the [cannot find....] disappeared and the screen indicating the update would occur reappeared. On my Vista computer I could not get back to a connection indication. So I downloaded SWUPgrade to my XP computer and things continued to a successful conclusion. Android 2.1 works fine.

Default 2.1 joy!!!

First of all thanks to other posters about this problem. Secondly I fixed mine. I have a slightly different method from what has already been posted. Here's my story:

after fallowing ALL instructions about uninstalling drivers, turning off firewalls, bulling battery etc. I got to the download section and hit start. it froze at 6 seconds and 0%.

I let it sit for what seemed a long time altough maybe it was only 2 minutes or so. Anyway it didn't work so I pulled battery and tried again. This time it froze at 3 sec and 0% so I pulled battery and tried to start normally. it doesn't boot but instead says "cannot find .jpg or .png."

After reading about other posters I decided to try wiggling the usb cable. I had already pulled my usb cable so I put it back in download mode and plugged it back in. Well I had never closed the updater so it was still at the do not unplug screen, frozen at 0%, but as soon as I plugged it back in this time it started right back up no delay and then loaded everything fine.

Interrestingly I had also started my firewall and antivirus back up prior to reconnecting this final time. Also I'm using Win7 if anyone cares.

I figure if it's at 0% it "shouldn't" (don't you love that word shouldn't...) hurt to pull battery or cable. so if it's at 0% and is frozen for a long time (wait 5 minutes at least) then try to disconnect cable and then plug it back in. I assume that may be a good fix for others. but don't quote me on this if you mess up your phone. that's just what worked for me.

Default "cannot find .jpg or .png." Fix... Answer: Device Conflict issue

This answer along with the others is what made me realize that what's really going on is inside the "Device Manager". If you read into all the issues and look at the loader, it freezes up at 3 sec or some other interval. With what sbjforumman said was his fix, pointed me to looking at the port number my specific device was using. This switched each time I tried unplugging and plugging it back in. So, then I looked even harder at the situation. I found that the device wasn't reading correctly now that the phone had the "cannot find jpg or png" along w/ following the loader instructions.

So, do the following (similar to the above post):

1) Goto Device Mangler (Device Manager) and find the Samsung USB
2) Delete the device & drivers, While it's still plugged in & the Loader is stuck @ the 3 sec or what not. (this should time out and show Start Update)
3) Plug the device back in after doing the battery pull/restart loader on phone option. Pay attention to the com port it loads on.
4) Check the device manager again and make sure there is no Conflicts on the Samsung USB.
5) As long as there are no Conflicts (meaning no yellow exclimation symbols), click the Start Update.

I may not have correctly stated the names of the buttons and stuff, but you should understand when looking at the screens. Good luck!

Default Download freezing at 0%

I ran into the same problem. After reading this thread I just unplugged the usb cable a few times while It was still sitting on 0%.

Suddenly it started progressing and was done in a couple of minutes, if that long.

Now on to the adventure of 2.1...

Great Solution. I had the same issue with the Update D/L freezing at .3 Sec and 0%, thought i bricked my phone, so i just unplugged the usb cable on both ends twice and the downloader just started up. I'm using Windows 7.

I just had this exact problem, and wiggling the cable at that last screen was the fix. That makes no sense to me. Windows 7 x64.
