Sad com.motorola.contacts has stopped unexpectedly - no fixes have helped!

I have an Atrix 2 (MB865), Android version 2.3.6 and I'm having this terrible problem, searched for answers, tried many things, and still no solution. I need ideas, please!

So, any time I go into one of my phone's contacts, I get the error:

"The application Contacts Storage (process com.motorola.contacts) has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again. [Force close]"

It's completely stopped working!
I did some internet searching, and what comes up most often is people having frozen some application (usually Yahoo Mail). I haven't frozen anything since long before it worked fine, and then, all I have frozen is Easy Battery because I want to try GreenPower without uninstalling. Anyway, unfroze them, but still no good.

Speaking of uninstalling, the only thing I have uninstalled recently is GreenPower Free after I bought the full version.

More internet searching led me to an answer that seems to help most people: replacing the files in /system/app:
blur_yahoo.apk
blur_yahoo.odex
YahooContacts.apk
YahooContacts.odex
Mine weren't missing, but I went ahead and got the Linux 2.3.6 versions of those files, copied them over, changed the permissions to 644 and the owner/group to root, power booted (battery out), and no good.

Another suggestion was renaming the two BlurContactsSync files to *.bak. Did that, then reboot... no change.

Then I saw something where someone mentioned LinkedIn app asking about syncing, and I recalled I installed LinkedIn and told it not to sync contacts yesterday. So I un- and reinstalled. LinkedIn and allowed it to sync contacts. But when I went in to my contacts... still crashing.

The last thing I did was a complete restore of all apps and data with Titanium from a backup back when I know contacts was working. Reboot. No fix.

I'm now at a complete loss. Any more suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!
Thanks,
Liam

Have you tried a factory reset?

No, I'm really trying to avoid that if at all possible. A. Because I don;t know how (though I'm sure I can find good instructions online), B. Because is was a LOT of work getting it how I wanted to be in the first place!

When I first got it, I spent a full week of torture trying to use the Moto* software it was, I guess, SUPPOSED to work with to sync and transfer and whatnot. After many days I 'd gotten to the point I was truly regretting getting it, and wishing almost to tears I still had my iPhone.
Then I gave up on the "proper" software, read articles, and decided root it and to use Google Music for my music, Titanium for backup, FTPDroid for "syncing," and other 3rd-party software to make it so my phone is finally actually BETTER than my previous iPhone.

The through of trying to re-figure out the whole, ROM Manager/Busybox Installer/Superuser/Voodoo OTA, and whetever else I had to use a year ago to root it, before I can reinstall a couple dozen apps, makes me very anxious.

If that's the ONLY resort I have, so be it. But I want to try anything else first!

Rooting is super easy, download a file, connect your phone, double click a file in what you downloaded and a few seconds later your phone is rooted. Since you're on stock rom, I'd install cwm and do a full backup. Wipe cache partition, wipe dalvik cache and in cwm do a wipe data/factory reset. Once that's done check your contacts issue. If all is well, reboot into cwm and go to backup and restore/advanced restore/pick your backup/restore data....that will reinstall all your apps and app data from said backup.

OK, I've finally gotten around to looking into this further... I'm finding stuff on flashing new ROMs onto the phone and they require CWM "Flash ClockworkMod Recovery," but the only ATRIX option it has is for 4G, not the ATRIX 2.
Is this going to A. Stop me from being able to install any different ROMs? B. Stop me from using CWM to just backup and reinstall the stock ROM as described in the post above?

Thanks for any feedback.

I'm getting my info from CWM installed on my phone. Anything I try doing on it, including backing up my ROM, it tells me I have to have the CWM "Recovery installed before continuing." So, I go up to "Flash CWM Recover" and I'm prompted to "Confirm Phone Model." The only ATRIX option is ATRIX 4G... no ATRIX 2.
And from what looking at mod info online, like for cyanogenmod, I see warnings all over that ATRIX 4G and ATRIX 2 are different enough in hardware that you do NOT want to select stuff for the 4G if you have the 2.

Thanks

Dude, I've flashed all the available roms for the Atrix to it via CWM Recovery, made numerous nandroid backups via CWM Recovery, so trust me when tell you CWM Recovery is available for the Atrix 2 and is fully functional. You must have installed the wrong version of CWM Recovery, plain and simple.

Dude, I'm not doubting you. I'm just telling you all what I'm experiencing.
Er... I see only one CWM in the Android(GooglePlay) store. "ROM Manager" with the cog wearing the black hat at a jaunty angle. Is that not it? Are there others with different names and icons that I need to choose oneof them? (Well, there's the "ROM Manager Premium" version I guess. Does THAT one give ATRIx 2 support?)
Thanks.

Oh, and since you're ATRIX 2 ROM experienced... is there one in particular that you recommend that's an improvement over the stock AND doesn't have anything disabled?

Like I said before, you installed the wrong one! CWM Recovery is not something offered on the Play Store. LoL. You need to do WAY more research on modding your phone before you go doing so, that's how people end up with expensive paper weights. There is plenty of info on this forum on how to mod your phone, including how to flash CWM Recovery to it. Look around and familiarize yourself before you go doing any more modding.

OK, thanks for the tip!
You may not have noticed, but the reason I'm even in this thread has nothing to do with wanting to play around with modding my phone, but rather to fix the problem with my phone's Contacts not working anymore. It was recommended to me in this thread, as a fix, to backup my ROM, reset, and restore it.
And, you'll notice that I have not done anything silly like select "ATRIX 4G" and brick my phone because I AM being careful. I just didn't know in this case that the Google/Android store was not where one gets CWM--the app the previous person in this thread recommended I use.

Can someone tell me where I can get this soopersekrit version of CWM for ATRIX 2? Because everything I search for leads me to something like this:
What Is ClockworkMod Recovery And How To Use It On Android [Complete Guide]
which is exactly what I installed on my phone through the Android Store. :P
Thanks

I don't care why you're in this thread, I was just addressing your comment about not having a functional CWM Recovery for the Atrix 2. If your current setup is not functioning properly, how does it make sense to restore it once you do the other steps? It doesn't! Your best bet would be to use RSDLite to flash the 2.3.5 fxz, putting your phone back to stock, then allow the 2.3.6 OTA update and restore your apps. Installing CWM Recovery, making a backup of your malfunctioning rom, resetting your phone then restoring the backup of the malfunctioning rom you just made is a complete and total waste of time because when you do the restore it will set your phone back to how it was when the backup was made.

Oh, teehee, you obviously don't know how to read because

#1 I never told you to go to the play store to use get any app to do anything
#2 I never told you to restore your rom, the only restore I suggested was for your apps and app data.

Look, I'm just going by what you originally suggested (which of all my searching has been the ONLY thing that sounds like might fix my problems). You said above:

"Since you're on stock rom, I'd install cwm and do a full backup. Wipe cache partition, wipe dalvik cache and in cwm do a wipe data/factory reset. Once that's done check your contacts issue. If all is well, reboot into cwm and go to backup and restore/advanced restore/pick your backup/restore data....that will reinstall all your apps and app data from said backup."

So, step 1. (after rooting), I installed CWM in order to do the full backup. Full stop. That's where I am. Installed CWM per suggestion, and am stymied by the fact it won't let me do a a full backup because it won't let me do ANYTHING without selecting my phone model, and ATRIX 2 isn;t one of them.

Now if you're suggesting I do something completely different from this earlier suggestion, cool. I'll go find this RDSLite now and go from there and see what happens....

Well, you suggested install CWM... where else was I going to go but the app store to find it? And when I saw it was in there, why would I think to try to find it from somewhere else? *shrug* And now that I know the CWM in the app store is, apparently, NOT the one I want, I'm searching for CWM on the Intertubes, and ALL I'm finding in relation to CWM is exactly the same app I installed through the App Store. So... since you suggested I install CWM, is there some location you recommend I get it from if not the App Store?

Seriously, not trying to be difficult here-- I'm trying to follow your suggested instructions exactly and to the letter. But I only knew one place to look for CWM... and found it there. *shrug* What else should I've done?

All my posts are still here in the thread, have not been edited...can you show me the one that says go to google play store, download and install rom manager and use the cwm recovery feature in it to make your backup? Take your time

I know what I said, that's why I can tell you I did not tell you to download any rom manager for anything. I can also tell you that I've told you more than once now that you're trying to use the wrong version of cwm recovery. I can also tell you that I've told you more than once that the info you need to get the correct CWM Recovery is right here on the forum and can be found with a simple search in this forum.

My original suggestion still stands....I can't guarantee you it will fix your problem but seems a logical option in trying to fix your problem. Going straight to the fxz flash is like killing a fly with a sledgehammer.....it will work but is more difficult than it needs to be. Flashing the fxz will put your phone 100% back to stock so you'll have to redo everything for certain but will fix your problem for certain. Doing my original suggestion will allow you to put your phone back to how you had it before the reset, but it may not fix your problem.

And, not to beat a dead horse, but in my defense, you suggested I install CWM and backup... when I found CWM and the ONLY "backup" it has listed in there is for a ROM backup... well, can I be blamed for assuming the backup you meant WAS for a ROM backup?
Again, if all this goes back to the fact that the CWM that I install was not the one you intended, then... I just need to know where THAT CWM is so I can get back on track with your intended suggested instructions.

So you assumed you'd get it from the app store? See what happens when you assume? So since I told you VictoryROM is a good rom and you should install it, it's not available in the app store.

The obvious thing to do would be to ask how to install CWM Recovery. Read about it, learn about it, ask questions.

Whoa whoa whoa! We have a miscommunication here!
When I said "teehee it was you," you took that way wrong!
See, I had said earlier "someone previous suggested I use cwm blah blah blah" and I was being serious by saying "someone" as I didn't go back to see WHO said that. I sincerely didn't realize that person was you!
So, when I said "teehee it was you," the subtext intended was: "oh man! I look like an idiot. I'm referring to 'someone said' when all along it was YOU who was that someone. Teehee, I'm an idiot." It was NOT some passive-aggressive slam at you. So, I haven't apologized for it because until your last post, I had no idea it was taken as a smartass comment direct at YOU as opposed to me. So... sorry.

Secondly, sorry for all the grief. You were trying to help me from the beginning, and I appreciate that. From my very first posting, I DID mention I'd been doing searching...and BOY howdy did I do searching! So, I'm not adverse to doing my own searching. But, it's logical for me when someone says to install an app that the 1st thing I'm going to look for it is in the app store. But on top of that, I DID search for "cwm" online and online confirmed for me (so I thought) that the cwm found in the app store was indeed a root utility that does backup and whatnot, so I didn't think there was any need to search beyond that since it looked like I was getting exactly what was intended. If I had any inkling that the "cwm" found in the store was not what was needed, I would indeed, as I've done many many times, searched the internet...which is what I'm doing between postings here.

I WILL find what I need but, cut me some slack: as I indicated from my first post, I'm NOT a rooted Android expert like you are, so I don't instinctively know what or where to search so it's going to take me some more time. And because I'm not a mod'ing expert or experienced, I think it's not unusual for me to start looking for a suggested app in the app store.

Be that as it may, since I now know you thought I was insulting you earlier: you have my sincere apology for that miscommunication. And my thanks for the help you're trying to give me.

We cool?

Secondly, sorry for all the grief. You were trying to help me from the beginning, and I appreciate that. I would indeed, as I've done many many times, searched the internet...which is what I'm doing between postings here.

The only miscommunication is on your end as I did say to install CWM Recovery, said nothing about installing ROM Manager and using it's CWM Recovery. So no, it wasn't me.

You still haven't found it? LoL! Your aversion to listening is painful. I'm no expert, trust me, but I also don't assume when it comes to modding my phone, nor would I try to blame someone who's trying to help me for giving me the wrong direction when in reality the only reason it's wrong is because of my assumption. The fact that I didn't say "install ROM Manager" should have been an indication that you didn't need to install rom manager.

Just for the sake of comic relief, I just did a google search on the internet for what you're looking for and it was the second result that turned up. I'm amazed at how hard you're making this

I wanted to root my phone, flash roms and other mods to it just as bad as the next guy, but when I was in your shoes (not familiar at all with any of it) I did tons of research, found instructional write ups and studied them, listened to other more experienced users and their recommendations, asked tons of questions and learned from the mistakes of others before I decided to take the plunge and do it myself. I highly suggest you do the same. Had you done so, you would have seen that if you searched "atrix 2 rom manager cwm recovery" not a single person who has an atrix 2 has been able to use the included version of cwm recovery. That should have been all the indication you need to tell you that's not what you want or need. That's the kind of research i'm talking about. It's a must!

*sigh*
I did say I was still searching for the right answer, and guess what, I indeed found it after just a couple of minutes. And my phone is right now in cwm recovery doing a full backup as originally intended.
I still say that my mis-inferring what you said is not farfetched or completely illogical, and should be understandable...whatever. Bridge...water...under...yaddayadda. I never said YOU miscommunicated the "cwm" thing, I'm just saying my mistake in going to the largest and most popular repository of apps to look for something called "cwm" and actually finding one, albeit the wrong one, shouldn't be seen as a dumbass act. *shrug*

I apologized for the miscommunicated -- BY ME -- _unintended_ smartass remark. And I've sincerely thanked you for the help, and I stand by that. *shrug*

Alright man, last post on the subject. First, I accept your apology. Second, I hope you learned that you shouldn't assume anything...ask just for confirmation. I also hope you've learned how important it is to listen. Glad you got it all worked out. Did it fix your problem?

Gah! So close! I deleted caches, etc., backed up, reset, and booted back into the phone. The contacts behaved just fine! Of course, it didn't have any of my contacts, just the default AT&T ones, but still, it was working fine.
So, I re-rooted and re-installed the ATRIX 2 bootstrapp (which is what, I discovered, provides cwm recovery), and rebooted into cwm recover and performed the restore.
That all went great... but then the contacts are crashing again just like before.
Which shouldn't surprise me since I essentially just restored the phone exactly back to the way it was. :-/

Oh, and I did just do: "backup and restore/advanced restore/pick your backup/restore data....that will reinstall all your apps and app data from said backup" and didn't play around with ROMs. So, I gather, whatever is wrong with contacts backed up in the app data and was restored with it.

Since it worked, you're one step closer....at this point you're not gonna have it as easy as you want so what I would do is make a backup of all you apps only, do the factory reset again and this time just restore your apps, no app data. Or you could just say screw it and flash the fxz and start completely fresh.....I think that would be the better option to be honest. You could backup your apps and save them to your pc, format your sdcard then do the fresh install and finally restore you apps once that's done.

So I have run in to the same problem, but I have the Motorola Photon 4g. I tried the same kind of things as posted above but now when I try and add a contact (I can view contacts) it force closes.

Hi Mechphisto,

I have a Motorola RAZR XT910 and recently I had a problem with the contacts after installing an updated version of Friendcaster Pro. It seems that after that install, my contact manager started experiencing all the same symptoms you described. I did exactly as you did and did some research to no avail. However, this is good news I'm posting and I can tell you I fixed the contacts manager.

The fix is simple and is as follows: (hopefully it works for you too)

1. download and install a freeware program called Root App Delete

2. Press the SysApp button to go to view all system applications installed/running in your system currently.

3. Find and select Contacts v(whatever your respective version # is) and click disable and exit the application

4. After you have disable the contacts app try to launch it from your launcher home screen or your homescreen in general.

5. After the app is confirmed to be disabled relaunch Root App Delete app and this time go to Recycler and enable the contacts.

6. Test out your native android contact manager...it should work now!

7. Do a little dance in celebration...lol

Hope this helps!

Cheers!

Lots of good information on this thread. I had the same issue on my Android. Thanks to you all I found that my simple fix was to uninstall my hotmail app. Apparently, that was the frozen app but I would have never found it without reading this threat. Now I can access my contacts. Thanks guys....you rock!

Thumbs up

I have a Motorola Atrix and was having this same problem. I went to Motorola.com and they told me to clear my partition. I did so and it did not help. I then went again online to a different rep with Motorola.com and right off the bat (after checking to see if I had backed up my contacts), he recommends I do a Factory Reset! It was not until I I pointed out that I would really like to try something else first, because doing a Factor Reset would delete all my installed apps, that he then suggested I call them for Level 2 help at 800-734-5820. Go Figure~!
...Anyway! Before calling Motorola, I found this thread. Frankly I felt bad for the first guy who was beat up because he did the wrong thing... no help.
THEN! I saw the last person's Hotmail post and BINGO!
YES! Hotmail in the past week or two went to Outlook for everyone! So LOTS of people will have this problem.
I JUST DELETED HOTMAIL and problem is solved! Contacts Storage is again working. Thanks so much!!!

The Motorola ATRIX 2 is AT&T's followup to their original ATRIX 4G. It won't differ much in terms of specs, but this would bring Ma Bell up to speed with more recent offerings from Sprint and Verizon in the Photon 4G and the DROID Bioni... Read More
