Default Exit Strategies

In light of the recent news that there is no 2.1 upgrade coming for the Cliq XT in Q4: This thread was started in hopes of assisting one another to find ways for not getting stuck with this phone. We are only victims if we do nothing.

If you're happy with your XT, this thread is not going to be helpful to you. If on the other hand, you are seeking ways to approach Tmo or Moto, or you just need to hang out with people who understand your frustration, this is your spot.

Modding talk is allowed. We ask that you please provide links and as much information as will be helpful to a person seeking remedy. Modding is a choice...a freedom, so that you don't feel victimized and left behind when "the powers that be" decide to EOL your phone. It is within your rights to Mod your phone just as it is within your rights to upgrade any computer that you have purchased (or own). It is NOT against the law to Mod your phone! It MAY void your warranty however. But there are programs out which can take your phone back to factory specs so be aware of this.

Want to Root your phone? [ROOT] Cliq XT

Many of you ask about ROMs - Which ones are the best, etc. Mastermind278 has posted his favorites and I have copied and pasted his message below in quotes for your convenience.
Quote:
Guys here are my top 3 Recommendations on the ROMS to be used on the CliqXT. These ROMS with their prospective patches are considered to be very close to bug free.
1. Basically Blurless MM278
2. Adlx 2.1.54-2 Consolidation
3. Motoblur 2.1.54

I recommend the first 2 ROMS the most (Adlx's and mine). They will pretty much give you an amazing CliqXT running Android 2.1.

There are works on Froyo and Gingerbread ROMS but those are still in development with bugs so they are not perfect for daily use like the above ones.

Lastly, if someone has been helpful to you in any way, there is a little "Thanks" button in the lower right hand corner of their post. Please take a minute to thank someone for being helpful! It is appreciated

NowVoyager, Thanks for starting this new thread (away from Motorola) I went with the G2. Did have to do a contract extension, but that's ok because I like t-mobile.

Cool Thanks for this new thread

I've been lurking for a few weeks over there on the Bloto forums and have been as frustrated as everyone else. Imagine my surprise when Bloto posted that there would be no update for the wally XT! No problem, I had masterminds ROM on mine within 30 minutes (I had been delaying to see if Bloto would delay anymore). Yes there are a couple of issues one must get used to, but when the update for TMO comes out a fix should be in store. I'll tell you, Angry Birds on the XT isn't very fast, but it is fun and best of all - there! At 1.5 the XT is already a brick, so...

This thread is a great idea. I have stopped supporting the Motorola Support thread completely so I guess this is my new stop. I'm completely fed up and I can't get a new phone right now so I'm looking at my modding options. Can anyone lead me in the direction of a good ROM. One that is stable. I'm also hoping that the speakerphone issue is resolved (that's one of the main reasons that I have not gone the route of modding yet).

Well thanks for the help in advance.

Hi gang! Welcome!!! So good to see you all!!!

I figured that sooner or later, the powers that be will cut the lights out over there and we had better have somewhere to go, LOL.

As to modding. Mastermind278 is around here and hopefully we can get him in here to answer some questions. Here is one of his videos showing the XT running Froyo:

Enjoy!

For those who have gotten exit deals, congratulations! Please feel free to share your process to freedom, LOL.

Strategy #1: Dealing With Customer Retention

For those who have yet to get a deal via Customer Retention, I found this little tidbit today which will help us to understand the mindset of the Tmo Retention Rep, why they try to play hardball and how to have the most success with them. It's a bit of an eye opener between the lines.

@ Blackrob1010 try this one it is the one i have been using since begining of the month. I also recommend that if you cannot load the J_r00d recovery down load rom manager. that is what I had to do. I worked great. just the speakerphone toggle issue.

Default Modding Info

Strategy #2 - Modding Your Phone

This is an option for the brave and bold risk takers among us, LOL
I would defer to the knowledge of our own Mastermind278. He is working on the XT as we speak.

Here is where Android Experts and Developers hang out. Familiarize yourself with the place and their lingo. Its heaven, LOL

Upgrading, Modifying and Unlocking - xda-developers

Here is a website where many modders hang out

Android, Blackberry, Motorola & Palm News | ModMyMobile - Android News

Just remember Modding your phone is a " do at your own risk" strategy. On the plus side, it is one that has the potential to extend the life of your phone if it works. On the other hand it has the potential to brick your phone and void your warranty. Weigh out the pros and cons for your individual situation. Get all the information that you can and then do what is best for YOU.

Let us know what you've done, what was your process and how you feel about your outcome!

Please leave your questions here too so that we all can learn together!

I'm still working a deal with customer retention, hard to decide between the optimus t and mt4g, in the mean time I'll try one of the roms available this afternoon when I get to a computer.

Btw, this forum is great on the phandroid app, actually works good on my briq xt. Much easier and faster than the browser

Default Letter Writing Strategy

Strategy #3 - Letter Writing Campaign

This option is for those who are seeking restitution and who have tried to get assistance via Customer Service/Retention to no avail. The object is to get the attention of people in authority who may be moved to bring remedy to your situation.

If you choose to write a letter via Snail Mail (my method of choice because it cannot be thwarted by a Spam Filter and go unseen) here is a short guideline. You have a right to let the officers of the company know how you feel regarding Your unfortunate experience as their customer. [All of this information is a matter of public record and can be found here: EDGAR ONLINE - MOTOROLA MOBILITY HOLDINGS, INC - SEC FILINGS ]

Dr. Sanjay K. Jha - CEO
Daniel Moloney - President
Marc E. Rothman - SVP CFO

Motorola Mobility Holdings, Inc.

Address:
600 NORTH US HIGHWAY 45
LIBERTYVILLE, Illinois 60048
Telephone:
847-576-5000
__________________________________________________ ____

Strategy: Letter of Complaint

Write individual letters to the officers. It can be the same letter addressed separately to each. Be professional. Use your best stationery. Type the letter but sign it in black or blue ink.

The body of the letter should address your issues of complaint. Tell them how the failure of their product to perform as promised, has affected you, your income if applicable and your well-being (especially list precisely how it has caused a degradation in performance of your phone - such as the inability to use applications that you rely upon or have paid for that you no can use because that application no longer supports the Android 1.5 OS).

2. Tell them what you want - How you wish to have this issue resolved. Be reasonable and be firm. Let them know that you are and have been a loyal customer and would like to continue. However the outcome of this issue rests with whether or not you receive fair treatment in the matter to your satisfaction.

3. Close the letter in a firm but non-threatening manner. It is vital that you let them know that the above issues and their response to these issues will reflect heavily upon whether or not you will continue as their customer now and in the future. (This affects their bottom line)

4. Wait for a response.

Hope it works out for ya real soon Re-TARDIS!

I am leaning toward the G2 because I want to try Vanilla Android. I have had such a terrible time with UI overlays. The only thing that is giving me pause is that I know the LG Optimus 2X dual core is coming in March. And I'm more than a little anxious about what's going to happen @ CES next week!!!

Study these sites. The unlockr site is a little more detailed but read before you do it to understand the process.

How To: Root the Motorola CLIQ XT / Quench | TheUnlockr
How To: Load a Custom ROM on the Motorola CLIQ XT / Quench | TheUnlockr
[RECOVERY] j_r0dd-mb501-v1.8.1 FINAL (12.13.10)
[ROM] Barely BlurredXT (Android 2.1) for Motorola CliqXT/Quench - BETA 2 (10/10/2010)

Only takes about 30 minutes being careful. Mastermind278 ROM is the one I'm using and 'angry birds' is running good. Had a problem with an existing app but mm278 told me it should be fixed in a few days. Good luck and safe modding.

I highly recommend if you are thinking of Modding have RSD Lite on your pc. This will allow you to reinstall the original Factory image back to your phone:

get from here: http://androidoverdrive.com/downloads/RSDLite4.6.7z

Drivers: Welcome to Motorola

But you also need to find the Factory Images found here: ModMyMobile Forums - Downloads - CLIQ XT - T-Mobile US 1.32.24

That will bring it back to current (12/24/10) standards.

As with anything Please Read all information and ask questions.

Yeah, Retention is playing hardball. The article that I posted above re: Retention Reps is eye-opening about how they come upon this pricing.

But in short, they start from the $499.99 price and negotiate down. They "whack off" $250 in an instant "rebate" which brings it down to $249.99 They take off $50 to compensate you instantly for your "mail-in rebate" bringing your total to $199.99 - which is miraculously the same price as ANYONE can get the phone for online (except for BB who has it for $149.99).

They waive the $18 upgrade fee. They waive shipping charges. But tax you on the $499.

I used unlockr.com to mod my xt with the adlx 2.1.54 mod. Did it yesterday, no issues except the battery drains a bit faster.

I came over from the moto support forum as well, but I am using a different log in name. I mod'd yesterday and I am very happy with 2.1 on my xt.

I got so feed up with my cliq bieng left in the dust I sold mine on craigslist for $100. I will not get another motorola because of the frustation of bieng left behind with my cliq and no more updates. I have the mt4g and love this device.

It is so good to see all these good people here from motorola forum.
Really heart warming.
The forum is really upbeat so far.
I am glad the collection of moding links.

The motorola forum really left a bad taste in my mouth, and it significantly decreased the amount of work I was able to do the last couple of weeks.

I hope to get the Adlxmod done later today and then get back to work.

I wish the CyanogenMod was more stable then the way it is described.
Anybody has experience with it?

Welcome to @Adrian, @Merlin and @Butcher! (Remember to tell us who you were over on the Moto forum, so we'll recognize ya! LOL)

To the Modders: Is anyone doing their modding on a Mac? If so, where are you finding instructions for it? We want to make sure that all our users are covered. Thanks!

Found this on ModMyMobile

I finished rooting my XT on my MacBook Pro. Just download the Mac version of the ADK, use Terminal to run ADB and you're golden. (Thanks jcsjr)

Hope it helps someone.

Thanks Socko! You're aces!!!

Just a question: Are there differences between Intel and Non-intel Macs as to how this works?

Is there a step-by-step available like there is for Windows modding of the XT anywhere? If so, do you have the link?

Thanks so much Socko!

Default rooting on mac osx (4years old intel macbook)

Here are the steps I used for rooting from mac.
If you know linux commands, it is a trivial modification of the steps from
[ROOT] Cliq XT
I added more details about the SDK, and practical suggestions about typing the commands on the phone.
=============

I kept everything under my Downloads directory

==on the phone ==
- download from the market ConnectBot or other terminal emulator
- enable Settings->Applications->Development->USB debugging
== on the Mac ==
- download and extract android-sdk_r08-mac_86.zip from Android SDK | Android Developers
(It was …mac_x86.zip a few months before, it looks like a small typo that will effect the paths bellow.)
- download and extract Moto_MSM_Root.zip from ModMyMobile Forums - Downloads - ROOT (Backflip, Cliq XT, Cliq, Dext)
Now you should find the two directories android-sdk_r08-mac_86 and Moto_MSM_Root in your Downloads directory.
- open terminal window (I used iTerm)
cd ~/Downloads/android-sdk-mac_86/tools
./android (this starts the Android SDK and AVD Manager)
click: Available packages->Android Repository
de-select everything except Android SDK Platform-tools
click: install selected
Now you have the needed adb tool
exit the SDK manager, refreshing, or other stuff does not matter now.
- Connect Mac and phone with USB cable and on the phone change connection to Charge Only
== on the Mac ==
cd ~/Downloads/android-sdk-mac_86/platform-tools
adb devices ( this should list at least one device (your phone) attached)
adb push ../../Moto_MSM_Root/Superuser.apk /sdcard/Superuser.apk
adb push ../../Moto_MSM_Root/su /sdcard/su
adb push ../../Moto_MSM_Root/rageagainstthecage-arm5.bin /data/local/tmp/rageagainstthecage-arm5.bin
adb push ../../Moto_MSM_Root/install-root.sh /data/local/tmp/install-root.sh
adb shell
cd /data/local/tmp
ls (to see that you really have the two files install-root.sh and rageagainstthecage-arm5.bin)
chmod 0755 rageagainstthecage-arm5.bin
chmod 0755 install-root.sh
== on the phone ==
open terminal emulator (connectbot).
Typing for me was excrutiating, as while charging the phone from the mac
the touch screen is buggy.
Typing the following two lines took about 15 minutes first.
Delete and Enter keys right under each other is a nightmare.
The solution is to disconnect the usb cable while you type and reconncet before hitting enter at the end of the second line.
While the usb cable is disconnected type in connectbot
cd /data/local/tmp (hitting enter is fine while disconnected)
./rageagainstthecage-arm5.bin (do not hit enter!!!)
reconnect usb cable, check on mac with "adb devices" that your phone is connected,
then in connectbot hit enter at the end of the …arm5.bin line.
Wait patiently until you see this message - don't press anything:
[+] Forked xxxx childs.
Then press enter, disconnect the usb cord again, and close connectbot via the menu
Reopen the Terminal Emulator or ConnectBot on the phone (if you get the message that terminal died, dismiss it and run it again)
If you end up with "#" prompt, do the following.
Type into the console:
/data/local/tmp/install-root.sh
(if the script prints nothing, then rooting was successful)
- exit
Now you have successfully rooted the phone from mac.

Well...I didn't get very far, LOL
When I input the ./android command, I got this lovely message:
Please export ANDROID_SWT to point to the folder containing swt.jar for your platform.

Can we say that I don't know what the "L" its talking about? LOL

Happy on Mac

Sorry for the previous long post.

Other then installing the Mac SDK and finding a terminal and the paths to files,
everything is the same as for windows.

I just finished the mac-based installation of a custom recovery and adlxmod-xt-2.1.54, and I am extremely happy.

Ooh, the beauty of unix

The script cannot find the path to existing files.
The swt.jar should be in both of the following directories:
~/Downloads/android-sdk-mac_86/tools/lib/x86
~/Downloads/android-sdk-mac_86/tools/lib/x86_64

if this is the case then the following command could help
setenv ANDROID_SWT ~/Downloads/android-sdk-mac_86/tools/lib/x86_64
then try
./android

I am sorry.
I could give you hundreds of other tips, a few of them could work maybe.
Just let me know any time.

The first one would be to type in the terminal
either
ANDROID_SWT=~/Downloads/android-sdk-mac_86/tools/lib/x86_64
export ANDROID_SWT
or
tcsh
setenv ANDROID_SWT ~/Downloads/android-sdk-mac_86/tools/lib/x86_64

then try
./android

From the descriptions and discussions it seems to me the mast stable is adlxmod.
I have experience only with adlxmod (installed it yesterday).

Hello everyone.

Working my way through setting up my G2. It is an awesome phone.

Plain android takes some getting used to after living with blur. Personally, I kinda liked blur. I'd love to see blur 2.1 someday. Anyhow, I'm getting there with the G2.

So far, the only thing my CLIQXT did better than the G2 is bluetooth. I have the MOTO S9-HD, and use them when walking the dog. I hardly ever would get dropouts with the xt, today with the g2 it was drop out city. Hopefully a battery recharge will improve things.

Froyo is awesome, and I'm having fun installing all those apps that I could not access on 1.5

Hi there Queue515,

Glad you're enjoying your G2. You are having more dropped calls with the G2? I never used Bluetooth with the XT since I had so much trouble with it on the BH2.

I think that my reasons for leaning toward the G2 are precisely because it is Vanilla Android. Both the BH2 and XT had overlays and I am wondering that these *were* the problem? Yes, the overlays were fun but when they possibly contribute to the inoperability or the upgrade-ability of the phone, I had to rethink their usefulness.

Hopefully, I am not asking too much of the G2, having been so disappointed with the two previous lemons. I saw some videos of the upcoming LG Optimus 2X today. It is blazing fast and it has what appears to be a TouchWiz-like environment very much akin to the Vibrant. So, because of that overlay atop Android, I am reticent to consider it.

I'd like to hear more about your experiences with the G2.

The speakerphone toggle issue that is present in all 2.1 mods
was solved for me with the use of this application:
ModMyMobile Forums - View Single Post - Cliq XT NOW RUNNING Android 2.1 ... No Data and Keyboard Layout problems

@butcheroftexas - the Speaker toggle will still exist with that program. For some it helps make it better for others it can make things more complicated.

What I recommend is that once you make a call and toggle the speakerphone button, you should press the home button and then press the lock button. That way the phone isn't on the PHONE APP, so you can move the phone from your face and the proximity sensor doesn't cause it to need to get toggled once again.

At this moment I also recommend the following ROMS:
Motoblur 2.1.54
&
ADLXMOD 2.1.54

Both of these ROMS have most of the BUGS fixed except for the Speakerphone toggle.

The WFM cliqXT will root and stay permanent. Try some of the links on my post #15. I suspect you didn't actually finish the rooting process, or most likely - just rooting the phone doesn't change appearance or features. If superuser app is in the app tray then you are rooted.

After rooting, a custom ROM needs to be installed (I'm using Mastermind278 ROM and lovin it).

One word of warning to all potential first time modders: Make sure you do your homework first, understand the issues and have a backup plan if all goes south.

We've got several people here who are rooted, chief among them is Mastermind278 who has created a ROM that lots of people are happy with... There is also Butcher and Socko who have rooted their XT's so, ask away, Adrian! I'm sure some of them can help!

@NV,
Not dropping calls, I like to listen to music on bluetooth headphones while walking. On the g2, the music cuts out much more frequently than on the xt. This is when listening outside, and often out of direct line of sight. Definitely not optimal bluetooth conditions, but the xt didn't seem to have a problem.

Nvm. It took a billion tries to actually get it rooted, but it is rooted for sure now. So, if anyone cares or wants to know. WFM Cliq XT can be rooted like the rest.

I have successfully been using the adlx fo almost a month now. I just started having issues with his oc kernel though. I had to turn mine down to 691 and below to keep it stable. It just randomly shut down with the higher settings
